LESSON PLAN

SUBJECT: Natural sciences GRADE: 9

THEME: Planet earth and beyond TERM: 4

TOPIC: Earth as a system WEEK: 2

CONTENT AND CONCEPTS DATE: 10 October 2024

 Lithosphere

-Igneous rock

-Sedimentary rock

-Metamorphic rock

OBJECTIVES:
By the end of the lesson, learners should be able to;
 Define the lithosphere
 Identify the location of the lithosphere in the Earth’s structure.
 Explain that the lithosphere is made up of the outer most layer of the mantle and the earth’s crust.
 Differentiate the three types of rocks in the lithosphere
Duration: 30 minutes

Introduction:
- I will greet the learners and briefly state the Textbook- platinum
topic of the day and learning objectives for
grade 9 Natural science,

in details what lithosphere mean.

Body:
- To engage the learners, I will play video Leaners will be listening and taking down some important notes from the video.
about three different types of rocks.
- I will ask them to discuss in pairs what they Learners will discuss their answers in pairs and share their answers with the rest

I will explain in details the three types of

rocks:
-The igneous rock is formed when the Learners will listen and take down notes.
magma from volcano cools on the earth’s
surface. The temperature in the mantle is
extremely high and it is hot enough to melt
rocks. When the rocks melt they form a
molten rock called magma. Example,
Basalt, Pumice, Granite and Dacite.
-The sedimentary rocks are formed over a
very long period of time. Rivers and wind can
transport tiny fragments of rock called
sediments. when sediments are deposited
into shallow lakes or river bank they form
layers. Example, Chalk, sandstone, shale
and banded iron.
- The metamorphic rocks are formed when
the igneous and sedimentary rocks get
exposed to extreme pressure or extreme
temperature. They undergo chemical
changes which changes their mineral
structure. Example slate, schist, marble and
gneiss.

Conclusion
Recap the lesson by asking leaners to share one Learners will share the new things they learnt.
new thing they learnt in today’s lesson.
I will also give an overview of the lesson
stressing the important points.
Assessment Activities
Homework 10 October 2024
I will give them a homework.
1) Define the term lithosphere. (1)
2) Where is the lithosphere found in the earth? (1)
3) Name and describe how the three types of rocks are formed. (6)
4) Give three examples of each of the three type of rocks. (9)
Answers

1. lithosphere is defined as the rocky or the soil part of the earth.

2. In the crust and the upper solid part of the mantle.
3.
- igneous rock- it is formed when the magma from volcano cools on the earth’s
surface.
- Sedimentary rock- is formed by the accumulation or deposition of minerals or
organic particles.

- The metamorphic rocks are formed when the igneous and sedimentary rocks
get exposed to extreme pressure or extreme temperature

4. Igneous- granite, basalt and dacite.

Sedimentary- chalk, sandstone and shale
Metamorphic rocks- slate, marble and schist
EXPANDED OPPORTUNITIES:
Learners will go and study more on lithosphere in page 208 to 209 on the platinum grade 9 natural science textbook.
