CSU a 9 eg ee Holiday Dm Cul dae Dre oan au 873451 Uebel iz 2 ae)The great gods of Rome did not die with their empire of long ago. Instead, they still speak to us of heroics, tragedies and a more romantic take ‘on humanity. From one epic to another, we see the same patterns of hope, regeneration, and acceptance or banishment of the gods. In one story, Juno, who was sister and ‘wife of Jupiter as well as queen and goddess of heaven, descended from the skies and smote open the portals of the temple of Janus, god of doors. The country was in flames. As long as the doors were open, the populace breathed nothing but war. Janus, as a god, was always portrayed with two hheads—one looking forward and one looking behind, To tell Janus to watch his back would have been pointless, because he always did. He was called upon by Jupiter to protect the beginnings of all endeavors. It was his association with past and future that gave him the title of “god of doorways.” The first month of the year was Doors in Mythology named after him, depicting the doorway into the new year. The concept of doors as a symbol of perception thas been part of man’s history from the beginnings of time. William Blake made reference to the “Doors of Perception.” So did Aldous Huxley. Doors imply passage from one domain to another. For example, doors to temples and churches speak of the passage from the mundane to the spiritual, thus a cathedrals three doors represent Faith, Hope and Charity. This mythology of doors, so strongly represented by Janus, also stretches into Egyptian, Hindu and Buddhist beliefs. Janus guarded public gates and private doors. He used a stick with which to strike all unwelcome travelers. His two faces allowed him to watch both ways at once, making him the best of guards. In parts of England, as late as the mid-nineteenth century, all doors were opened when a person was dying 30 the soul could escape more easily Janus even appears in Celtic mythology. The smithy among the Celts was held in high regard, for his creations carried within themselves the aura of supernatural competence. His creations could help the powers of healing. just as Janus represented the doorway, so did the smithy, who could make all sorts of new things. The Pylon—The Ultimate Doorway Providing an impressive entrance to the temple of Ramesses Ill, the pylan comprises twin rectangular towers with battered walls and flat roofs crowned by concave cornices, all flanking a central gateway. As this form bears some similarity to the hieroglyph for the horizon, it may have represented the twin mountains between which the sun was believed to rise. Niches in the facade once held wooden flagpoles, from which ee hung long, colored pennants, symbolizing ' Quardian goddesses. In \\Annied Attic the jambs, a special © 2002 Anne's Ate sites 1 kone are Sandy Toes 15°55 motif known as the shadow of the door and composed of the hieroglyphs for life and power, marks where the door leaves rested when opened In Egyptian’ text, the pylon is “the reach of heaven,” and the flagstaffs are “the stars of heaven.” They are made of real cedar, wrought with Asiatic copper. Their tips are of electrum, which symbolizes approaching heaven. Two mighty obelisks of red granite, with pyramidions of electrum, rise at the double facade of the temple. The flagstaffs act as the guardians of the entrance, which is the means of approaching heaven vertically.
