HISTORY OF SCOUTING
Lt. Gen. Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell
Born: 22 February 1857 Paddington, London, England Died: 8 January 1941 (aged 83) Nyeri, British Kenya Spouse: Olave Baden-Powell Founder of the Scouting Movement Chief Scout of The World It all started with 20 boys and an experimental camp in 1907. It was held during August 1-9, 1907 located at Brownsea Island near Poole in Dorset, England. In January 1908 Baden-Powell publish the first edition of “Scouting for Boys”. After the successful published of the book “Scouting for Boys” produced a movement that quickly adopted the name of The Boy Scouts. The First World Scout Jamboree was in July 30,1920-August 8, 1920 at Kensington Olympia in London. 8,000 young people from different nations come together to share common interests and ideals. The First World Scout Conference was held with 33 National Scout Organizations represented, and also the World Scout Bureau. HISTORY OF SCOUTING IN THE PHILIPPINES Youth Scouting was founded in the Philippines in 1910 in Manila by Elwood Stanley Brown (1883-1924) of the YMCA. In 1913, troops were organized by Mark Thompson, Antonio Torres, Domingo Ponce, and Francisco Varona. In 1914, the Lorillard Spencer Troop organized in November in Zamboanga City by Lt. Sherman L. Kiser. Why Lorillard Spencer Troop? From the influence of Ms. Caroline S. Spencer, the mother of Lorillard Spencer Jr. he also member of Boy Scouts of America. She said that scouting will be good to the youth of Sulu. The Boy Scouts of America Philippine Islands Council No. 545 was founded in October 5,1923 in Manila by the Rotary Club of Manila. The Boy Scouts of the Philippines was legally established in October 31,1936 through Commonwealth Act 111 in Manila through the work of three men: Josephus Emile Hamilton Stevenot, Tomás Confesór y Valenzuela, and Manuél Luís Quezon y Molina, and the organization started activities in 1938. In 1953, the first Wood Badge course was conducted at BSP Camp Gre-Zar in Novaliches, Quezon City In April 23-30,1954 the first BSP National Scout Jamboree was held at Rolling Hills, Balara, Quezon City.
