I. PROBLEM SOLVING. Kindly solve what is being asked on each problem.

1. Member B is subjected to a compressive force of X00

whereas pin D is subjected to single shear.

3. The wire has a diameter of Z mm and is


made from A-36 steel. If a WX-kg man is
sitting on seat C, determine the elongation
of wire DE.
4. A propeller shaft in a ship is 3WY mm in diameter. The allowable angle of twist is 1 degree in
a 5.Z-meter length. If G = 80 GPa, determine the maximum torque (kN-m) the shaft can
transmit.

5. A compound shaft is composed of a 7W-cm length of solid copper 1X cm in diameter,


joined to a 9Z-cm length of solid steel 12 cm in diameter. A torque of 1W.X kN-m is applied
to each end of the shaft. Find the maximum shear stress in each material in MPa .For
copper, G = 40 GPa, for steel G = 80 GPa

6. The compound bar carries axial loads as shown. Determine the maximum allowable value
of P if the change in length of the entire bar is limited to 0.08 inch and the working stresses
listed in the table are not to be exceeded.

7. Two vertical rods attached to the light bar are identical except for the length. Before the
load W was attached, the bar was horizontal and the rods were stress-free. If W = 6WY0 lbs,
determine the internal load in each of the bar. Length of Rod A is 4.XY ft, and Length of
Rod B is 6.WX.

8. A water tank 8.ZY m in diameter and 1W m high has an internal pressure of 11X.7W kPa.
Determine the minimum thickness of the tank plating if the stress is limited to 40 MPa.

9. A 4-feet inside diameter of steel pipe, 1Z feet high, ¼ inch thick, carries oil with a pressure of
51XY lbs/ft^2. Determine the circumferential and longitudinal stresses in the steel in psi.
10. Determine the maximum torque (kN-m) that can be applied to a hollow circular steel shaft
of 1WY mm outside diameter and 7X.Z mm inside diameter without exceeding a shearing
stress of 60 MPa. Use G = 83 GPa.

11. From Problem 10, what maximum torque can be applied if the maximum twist is 0.5WXY
degree/sec?

12. As shown in the figure, there is a gap between the aluminum bar and the rigid slab that is
supported by two copper bars. At 100 degree C, ∆ = 0.18XY mm. The temperature in the
assembly is increased to 950.XY degree C. Neglect the mass of the slab.
For each copper bar, A = 500 mm^2, E = 120.WY GPa, and αcopper = 16.8 x 10-6
m/(m.degreeC).
For Aluminum bar, A=400 mm2, E = 70 GPa, and αaluminum = 23.1 x 10-6 m
/(m.degreeC).
Determine the stress in the aluminum bar in MPa. Determine the stress of copper in
MPa.

13. Determine the length (m) of the shortest 2.WY-mm-diameter bronze wire which can be
twisted through two complete turns without exceeding a shearing stress of 7.XY0 MPa. Use
G = 35 GPa.

PROBLEM 14-16

Three wood boards, each 4 inches wide, are


joined by the ¾-inch diameter bolt.
14. If the working stresses for wood are 8WZ.XY
psi (pounds per square inch) in tension find
the value of the force P.

15. If the working stresses for wood is 15XY psi in


bearing, find the of the force P.

16. If the working stresses for wood are 8WW.XX


psi (pounds per square inch) in tension and
15YY.ZZ psi in bearing, find the largest
allowable value of the force P.
PROBLEM 17-18

The lap joint is fastened with four rivets. The


working stresses are 1W ksi (kips per square
inch) for the rivets in shear and 1Z ksi for the
plates in bearing. Assume that the load is
equally distributed among the rivets.

17. Find the load P in pounds that can be


applied to the joint from shearing.
18. Find the load P in pounds that can be applied to the joint from bearing.

19. A plate is fastened to a fixed member by four 2Z-mm diameter rivets arranged as shown.
Determine the maximum and minimum shearing stresses developed in the connection in
MPa. The forces acting on the member is both 1X.YZ kN.

20. A flanged bolt coupling consists of eight 10-mm diameter steel bolts on a bolt circle 4YY
mm in diameter, and six 10-mm diameter steel bolts on a concentric bolt circle 3XX mm in
diameter. If the allowable shearing stress in the bolts is 6W MPa, determine the force P1 in
Newtons, the force P2 in Newtons and the torque that can be applied in kN-m.

21. A helical spring is made by wrapping a steel wire 2Y mm diameter around forming a
cylinder 150 mm diameter. Compute the load P in Newtons and the number of turns, n,
required to permit an elongation of 10Z mm without exceeding a shearing stress of 14X
MPa. G = 83 GPa. (Note: Illustrate the problem.)

22. For the assembly shown, W = 6.XY kN. Determine the shearing stress of the bronze spring
and steel spring in MPa. (Note: Show FBD’s and Deformation Illustrations.)

24. The friction pad A is used to support the member, which


is subjected to an axial force of P = X kN. The pad is
made from a material having a modulus of elasticity of
E = 4.ZZ MPa and Poisson’s ratio n = 0.4Y. If slipping does
not occur, determine the normal and shear strains in the
pad. The width is 5W mm. Assume that the material is
linearly elastic. Also, neglect the effect of the moment
acting on the pad.

25. Determine the maximum allowable load P that


can be safely supported by the frame if t = 1.WW
in. and b = 3.WW in. The wood has a normal stress
of 6.XY ksi, and shear stress of 1.5WZ ksi.

26. The aluminum bracket A is used to support the centrally


applied load of 8.ZZ kip. If it has a constant thickness of 0.5 in.,
determine the smallest height h in order to prevent a shear
failure. The shear stress is said to be 2X ksi.

A rigid bar, hinged at one end, is


supported by two identical springs. Each
spring consists of 2X turns of 10-mm wire
having a mean diameter of 15W mm. G =

per linear foot of Y lb/ft. Determine the maximum bending moment exerted on the boat.
Assume that the water exerts a uniform distributed load upward on the bottom of the boat
valued at Z+3 lb/ft.

38. Draw the shear and moment diagrams for the beam and determine the shear and
moment as function of x. H (N/m) is given by squaring the value of W multiplied by 100.
