– Compute-to-compute communication
• Compute-to-compute communication typically uses protocols based on the Internet Protocol
(IP). Each physical compute system (running an OS or a hypervisor) is connected to the
network through one or more physical network cards, such as a network interface controller
(NIC).
• Physical switches and routers are the commonly-used interconnecting devices. A switch
enables different compute systems in the network to communicate with each other. A router
enables different networks to communicate with each other.
• The commonly-used network cables are copper cables and optical fiber cables. The figure on
the slide shows a network (Local Area Network – LAN or Wide Area Network - WAN) that
provides interconnections among the physical compute systems.
• The cloud provider has to ensure that appropriate switches and routers, with adequate
bandwidth and ports, are in place to ensure the required network performance.

– Compute-to-storage communication
• A network of compute systems and storage systems is called a storage area network (SAN). A
SAN enables the compute systems to access and share storage systems. Sharing improves the
utilization of the storage systems. Using a SAN facilitates centralizing storage management,
which in turn simplifies and potentially standardizes the management effort.
• Common SAN deployments types are Fibre Channel SAN (FC SAN), Internet Protocol SAN (IP
SAN), and Fibre Channel over Ethernet SAN (FCoE SAN)
• Fibre Channel SAN (FC SAN): A high-speed, dedicated network that uses Fibre Channel (FC)
protocol to transport data between compute systems and storage. FC provides block-level
access and uses SCSI commands encapsulated within FC frames. It offers high performance,
scalability, and reliability, often used in enterprise environments.
• IP SAN: This model uses the Internet Protocol (IP) for block storage communication, typically
over existing IP-based networks. Protocols like iSCSI and Fibre Channel over IP (FCIP) are
commonly used. iSCSI encapsulates SCSI commands into IP packets, providing a cost-effective
and widely compatible solution, especially in cloud and disaster recovery environments.

• Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE): This converged network uses Ethernet to transport FC
data alongside regular network traffic. FC frames are encapsulated within Ethernet frames,
reducing the need for separate infrastructures for storage and data communication. FCoE
allows for unified network management and greater flexibility in data center environments.

• Each of these methods enables the efficient transmission of data between compute systems
and storage, ensuring seamless communication for applications and data processing.
– Inter-cloud communication
• The cloud tenets of rapid elasticity, resource pooling, and broad network create a sense of
availability of limitless resources in a cloud infrastructure that can be accessed from any
location over a network.

• However a single cloud does not have an infinite number of resources. A cloud that does not
have adequate resources to satisfy service requests from clients, may be able to fulfill the
requests if it is able to access the resources from another cloud.

• For example, in a hybrid cloud scenario, a private cloud may access resources from a public
cloud during peak workload periods. There may be several combinations of inter-cloud
connectivity as depicted in the figure on the slide. Inter-cloud connectivity enables clouds to
balance workloads by accessing and using computing resources, such as processing power
and storage resources from other cloud infrastructures. The cloud provider has to ensure
network connectivity of the cloud infrastructure over a WAN to the other clouds for resource
access and workload distribution.

Q2: Explain 'Fabric Port Types' in detail with diagram


In Fibre Channel (FC) switched fabrics, different types of ports are used to manage communication
between nodes and switches. These ports are categorized based on their function within the fabric,
enabling seamless data transfer between devices like compute systems and storage systems. Below
are the main types of fabric ports:

1. N_Port (Node Port)

Description: An N_Port is an end-point in the fabric, used for connecting devices (such as compute
systems or storage systems) to the FC switch. It is typically a port on an FC HBA (Host Bus Adapter) of
a compute system or on a storage system.

Role: Acts as an interface for the end devices to connect to the fabric.

Example: A port on a server's HBA connected to a switch.


2. E_Port (Expansion Port)

Description: An E_Port connects two FC switches, forming an Inter-Switch Link (ISL). E_Ports allow
switches to be interconnected, thus extending the size of the fabric.

Role: Facilitates communication between FC switches in the fabric, enabling expansion and scaling of
the fabric.

Example: A port on one FC switch that connects to another switch’s E_Port, creating a larger fabric.

3. F_Port (Fabric Port)

Description: An F_Port is a port on the switch that connects to an N_Port (end-point node) like an FC
adapter on a compute or storage system.

Role: It provides the fabric’s connectivity to end devices by linking the switch to an N_Port.

Example: A switch port connecting to a server's HBA or a storage system.

4. G_Port (Generic Port)

Description: A G_Port is a generic port that can operate as either an E_Port or an F_Port, depending
on how it is configured.

Role: Flexible port that can be dynamically configured as either an E_Port (for inter-switch
connectivity) or an F_Port (for end-point connectivity).

Example: A switch port that can automatically configure itself depending on the device or switch it is
connected to.

Q3. Explain concept of 'Zoning' and its types with the help of diagram.
Zoning is an essential function in an FC SAN that helps control which devices (compute systems and
storage) can communicate with each other. It enables administrators to logically segment node ports
within the fabric into groups called “zones”. Devices within the same zone can communicate, while
communication outside the zone is restricted. Zoning improves the security, performance, and
manageability of the SAN.
Zoning limits the visibility of devices to each other, which enhances security by preventing
unauthorized access between nodes. Additionally, it reduces unnecessary fabric traffic, particularly
Registered State Change Notifications (RSCNs), which are triggered whenever a change occurs in the
fabric (such as a new device being added). Without zoning, these notifications are broadcast to all
nodes, creating excess management traffic. Zoning ensures that RSCNs are only sent to the devices in
the zone where the change occurred, minimizing disruptions in data traffic.

Zoning can be implemented at the port level (switch ports) or at the node level (World Wide Name,
or WWN), and nodes can be part of multiple zones. The best practice in zoning is single-initiator-
single-target zoning, which isolates initiator ports (HBA) and target ports (storage), reducing
unnecessary compute-to-compute traffic and RSCNs, improving SAN performance.

There are three main types of zoning in an FC SAN:

1. WWN Zoning (World Wide Name Zoning)

- WWN zoning uses the unique World Wide Port Name (WWPN) of each node's port (HBA or storage)
to define zones.

- Each device in the SAN has a globally unique 64-bit WWPN. In WWN zoning, administrators define
zones by specifying the WWPNs of the devices that are allowed to communicate.

- Advantages:

- Flexibility: Devices can be moved to different physical ports in the fabric without needing to
reconfigure zoning, since the WWPN remains the same.

- Ease of management: WWPNs are static, so zoning configuration persists even when devices are
physically relocated within the SAN.

- Disadvantages: If a device is compromised, changing the WWPN requires hardware replacement or


reconfiguration, making this type of zoning slightly more challenging in security-related scenarios.

2. Port Zoning (Hard Zoning)

- Port zoning assigns zones based on the physical switch port IDs, defined by the switch’s domain ID
and port number.

- In port zoning, communication between devices is restricted based on the switch ports to which
they are connected. Each port is identified by its switch domain ID and port number.

- Advantages:

- Predictability: Access is controlled by physical connectivity, so changing a device does not require
modifying the zoning if the replacement is connected to the same port.

- Security: It provides strong access control because unauthorized devices cannot simply plug into
the fabric without reconfiguration.

- Disadvantages: If a device is moved to another port, the zone configuration must be updated to
allow it to communicate in its original zone.
3. Mixed Zoning

- Mixed zoning combines elements of both WWN zoning and port zoning.

- Administrators can create zones using both WWPNs and physical port IDs, allowing a more granular
and flexible approach to zoning.

- Advantages:

- Flexibility and control: Mixed zoning allows administrators to leverage the flexibility of WWN
zoning and the security benefits of port zoning.

- Adaptability: Ideal for complex environments where certain devices need to be flexible in terms of
physical connectivity, but where others require strict port-based controls.

- Disadvantages: This type of zoning can be more complex to manage because it combines both
WWN and port considerations.

Virtualization refers to the process of creating a logical abstraction of physical resources such as
compute, storage, and network. It enables a single physical hardware resource to support multiple
instances of systems, or conversely, it allows multiple hardware resources to support a single
instance of a system. For example, a single disk drive can be partitioned into multiple virtual drives,
or multiple disk drives can be concatenated into a single virtual drive. Virtualization can also present
a resource as larger or smaller than it physically is, providing great flexibility.

This abstraction of physical resources allows for more efficient use of IT infrastructure, which is
particularly beneficial in cloud environments. By decoupling services from physical hardware,
virtualization enables the dynamic allocation of resources, making it easier to manage and scale.

Key Benefits of Virtualization:

1. Resource Optimization:
o Virtualization allows for better utilization of physical resources. Multiple virtual

efficiency compared to bare-metal hypervisors.

o Limited Performance: The presence of an underlying operating system can consume


compute resources that could otherwise be allocated to virtual machines, which is
why hosted hypervisors are more suitable for non-critical applications like
development, testing, or training.

• Examples: VMware Workstation, Oracle VirtualBox, Parallels Desktop.

3. Use Cases for Hypervisor Types:

• Bare-Metal Hypervisors are typically used in large-scale enterprise data centers and cloud

1. Built into Network Device Operating Environments:

In many cases, network virtualization software is embedded within the operating environment of
physical network devices, such as routers and switches. This software enables the partitioning of the
physical network into virtual LANs (VLANs) or virtual SANs (VSANs), allowing multiple isolated
networks to share the same physical infrastructure.

• Virtual LANs (VLANs): These are logical sub-networks created on a physical switch. VLANs
enable the segmentation of a network into multiple logical groups, improving traffic
management and security.

• Virtual SANs (VSANs): These provide similar functionality to VLANs but in a storage area

• Virtual Switches: These virtual switches allow VMs to communicate with each other within
the same physical host, or across different physical hosts, without needing physical switches

Storage virtualization software


Storage virtualization abstracts physical storage resources and presents them as virtual resources,
such as virtual volumes or virtual arrays. This abstraction enables better utilization, management,
and scaling of storage resources. The software responsible for this is referred to as storage
virtualization software, which can be built into storage devices, deployed independently on compute
systems, or available as part of a hypervisor's capabilities.

1. Storage Virtualization Built into Array Operating Environments:

Many modern storage arrays have storage virtualization software integrated into their operating
environments. This software has the ability to pool multiple physical storage devices—such as hard
drives, solid-state drives, or storage arrays—and present them as logical storage units.
• Logical Storage Representation: Through this software, physical storage devices are
abstracted and pooled, allowing them to be presented as a single virtual volume or virtual
array to the operating system.

• Simplified Storage Management: By pooling physical storage resources, administrators can


allocate storage dynamically based on demand, enhancing the flexibility of storage
management.

This type of storage virtualization is commonly used in enterprise environments, where managing
large amounts of storage across different devices and arrays is critical.

2. Storage Virtualization Installed on Independent Compute Systems:

In software-defined storage (SDS) environments, storage virtualization software is deployed on an


independent compute system. This form of storage virtualization provides an open platform that
abstracts existing physical storage resources—regardless of vendor—and presents them as unified
virtual resources.

• Pooling of Heterogeneous Storage: The software pools storage from multiple devices
(potentially from different vendors) and presents it as a single, virtual storage platform. This

• Automated and Policy-Based Management: With the help of control software, the storage
virtualization software can perform advanced functions like automated volume creation,
monitoring, and policy-based management of the entire storage infrastructure.

• Centralized Management: The software provides a single control point for managing all
storage resources, improving operational efficiency, and simplifying storage administration.

This type of storage virtualization is ideal for environments that require a high level of automation,
flexibility, and efficient use of existing resources across different platforms.

3. Storage Virtualization as a Hypervisor Capability:

Storage virtualization is also available as a hypervisor feature. In virtualized environments, the


hypervisor has the capability to create virtual disks that appear to the operating system as physical
disks.

• Virtual Disk Creation: The hypervisor abstracts the physical storage resources and creates
virtual disks that are assigned to virtual machines (VMs). These disks behave as though they
are physical storage devices, but they are actually created from the pooled storage resources
managed by the hypervisor.
