MODULE 1- DFT & IDFT Assignment

1. State and prove the following properties of DFT.

(i) Circular folding
(ii) Circular Frequency shift
(iii) Circular time shift
(iv) Circular convolution
(v) Parseval’s theorem.
(vi) Circular Correlation

2. If 𝑥(𝑛) is real valued sequence, obtain its DFT, 𝑋(𝑘) for the following
(vii) Modulation Property

two cases. And comment on the nature of 𝑋(𝑘).

(i) 𝑥(𝑛) is an even sequence. (ii) 𝑥(𝑛) is an odd sequence.
3. For the sequence x(n) = {-1,2,3,0,-4,1,2,-3} calculate the following

without computing DFT. (i)∑ X (K ) (ii)∑ | X ( K )|

k=0 k=0

4. Let x(n) be a finite length sequence with X(K)={10,1-j,4,1+j} using the

properties of DFT, find the DFT of the following.
πn
j
(i) x 1 ( n )=e x ( n ) (ii) x 2 ( n )=x ( (−n ) )4
2

𝑥1 (𝑛) = 𝑐𝑜𝑠 (2𝜋𝑛 / 𝑁) 𝑎𝑛𝑑

5. Determine the 4 - point circular convolution of the sequences

𝑥2 (𝑛) = sin (2𝜋𝑛 /𝑁); 0 ≤ 𝑛 ≤ 3 Using the time – domain formula.

Verify the result using frequency domain approach (using DFT and IDFT
method).
6. Determine the circular convolution of x 1 ( n )={ 1 ,2 , 3 ,−1 } x 2 ( n )={ 4 , 3 ,2 ,−2 }
using time domain formula. Verify the result using Frequency domain
approach.

impulse response ℎ(𝑛) = {5, 6, 7} to the input sequence 𝑥(𝑛) = {1, 2, −1,
7. By means of DFT & IDFT, determine the response of the FIR filter with

5 6}.

impulse response ℎ(𝑛) = {3,2, 1, 1} and input 𝑥(𝑛) = {1,2,3,3,2,1,-1,-2,-

8. Using overlap & save method, compute the output of an FIR filter with

3,5,6,-1,2,0,2,1} assuming the length of the block is 9.

impulse response ℎ(𝑛) = {1, − 2, 3} and input 𝑥(𝑛) = {2, −2, 8, −2, −2,
9. Using overlap & add method, compute the output of an FIR filter with

−3, −2, 1, −1, 9, 1, 3} use only 8 – point circular convolution in your

approach.
