MAN Diesel & Turbo

1 Information

Information
Welcome to SaCoSone EXPERT, MAN Diesel & Turbo‟s parameterization
tool for easy access and convenient online value changes in the SaCoSone
control system.
Having been specially designed for working hand-in-glove with the MAN
engine control system SaCoSone, the proprietary Windows application
SaCoSone EXPERT provides an easy-to-use graphical user interface and
facilitates making modifications in the PLC.
The huge benefit of the program is that the user need not have specific
knowledge of a PLC. Working with the parameterization tool enables the
user to view and change a large number of engine parameters, while
monitoring the effect on engine operating values. Once engine
optimization is finished, the whole parameter set can be saved to a file
on the PC. Thereby it is available for data recovery in the same
controller later on, or for copying all parameters to another identical
engine.
The primary target group of SaCoSone EXPERT is commissioning and
service engineers. While PLC knowledge is irrelevant, it is essential that
the user has a thorough knowledge of and experience with large-bore
engines. The parameterization tool is designed for experts, who are
aware of the consequences any change to the engine parameters can
have.
To find out more about SaCoSone EXPERT and how it can help in daily
maintenance and operation of your engine plant, please read on.

Frequently used functions are available as so called “quick access”

buttons on the toolbar located above the main menu. Just as in other
Windows applications you are free to position the quick access toolbar
below the ribbon. Unique symbols and a tooltip text will help you to
make the connection between the functions in the ribbon and the quick
access buttons.
MAN Diesel & Turbo

2.2 Ribbon
User Interface

Fig. 3 Ribbon

In the ribbon on top of the application window you find all functions the
parameterization tool provides. The commands are organized into a set
of tabs.
The „Data‟ tab contains all file related commands. In the „Controller‟ tab
you find functions for connecting to the gateway and for handling the
data on the control modules. The „Tools‟ tab offers some additional,
useful displays. While the „Customizing‟ tab is needed to create your own
user-defined views on parameter lists, the „View‟ tab lets you adjust the
look and feel of your application.

2.3 Permanent Opv Display

On the left-hand side of the main application window the bar for perma-
nently displaying operating values is located.
Clicking on the „Watch Opv‟ button opens a dialog with all available
operating values, from which you can select one for permanent display.
You can select a non-specific number of operating values for permanent
display. The limitation of the visible opvs lies within the resolution of the
screen. For a resolution of 1280x1024 ten opvs can be displayed
simultaneously, for 800x600 the quantity would be six.
To every operating value on display a context menu is attached, which
offers functions to add another opv to the permanent display, „Remove
Selected‟ opv or „Remove All‟ opvs from the opv bar.

Fig. 4 Permanent Opv Display

2.4 Search Bar

User Interface
Fig. 5 Search bar

Just above the main display area, the search bar is located. It contains a
textbox for user input and a button to start the search. The search bar is
not attached to a certain menu. This way it is always available, inde-
pendent of the program status. The toolbar visibility can be changed in
the „View‟ ribbon tab.
The user can type any search string in the textbox. After clicking the
“Search for ID or name” button, the whole datatree is searched for
matching items. If the search was successful, a new category “Search Re-
sults” is created where all matching parameters and opvs are displayed.
In case there were no matches found, this is reported via dialog box.
For more information please see the „How To… Search for a Parameter or
Opv‟, chapter 9.9.

2.5 Data Tree

Fig. 6 Data Tree

The main window is divided into two parts: the data tree section on the
left and the tabular view on the right. On the left-hand side of the main
window an explorer-like treeview shows the engine functions. After
clicking on one of the nodes, the underlying data broken down into
parameters and operating values is displayed in two tables on the right-
hand side of the main window.
After connecting, the parameter list loaded from the gateway will be
displayed in the category “Online Data”. When opening a local parame-
MAN Diesel & Turbo

ter list from PC, this list will be displayed in a category named after the
User Interface

file. The category containing a complete parameter list is a main catego-

ry. While user-defined categories are editable, a main category does not
accept changes of any kind.

2.6 Parameter Table

Fig. 7 Parameter Table

This tabular view contains all parameters belonging to the group selected
in the data tree.
All columns can be sorted ascending and descending by clicking on the
column header. The available columns in detail are:
Id: unique identifier
Name: meaningful name
Value: numeric value
Unit
Upper Limit
Lower Limit
Type
WriteLevel: security level

Parameter Curve

Operating value Map

Unknown type

The only cells that can be modified are cells in the value column. The
value column will be editable if the current user has sufficient permis-
sions for changing the parameter.
To change the value, you can either enter the cell to edit and manually
type in a new value, or you can use the numeric up/down controls. For
each value there is one numeric up/down arrow to increment or decre-
ment the value by one percent of the range - whereas the range is de-
fined the difference between the upper and the lower limit.
MAN Diesel & Turbo

2.7 Opv Table

User Interface
Fig. 8 Opv Table

This tabular view contains all operating values belonging to the selected
group in the data tree. Approximately the same applies to both parame-
ter table and opv table.

2.8 Status Bar

Fig. 9 Status Bar

The status bar at the bottom of the application window shows whether
there is an active connection to a gateway.
Furthermore it informs the user which access level he has been assigned
by the gateway. This determines the number of parameters and
operating values that he is allowed to see and to change.
The token symbols on the right side provide information about the
current security token log-in status of the user. Please refer to chapter
7.5 for details.
When a parameter list is loaded from the gateway or opened offline, the
total number of parameters will be reported on the left side of the sta-
tus bar.

3.1 Data Tab

Fig. 10 Data Tab

The „Data‟ tab hosts the „File‟ group where all file related operations
can be found. Depending on the connection state some functions are
enabled / disabled. The four functions from this tab are available in the
„Quick Access Toolbar‟ as well.

3.1.1 Open

This opens the folder-browser-dialog where you can select a local (i.e.
on your computer) parameter list to be displayed.
Displaying a local list is only possible in Offline-Mode. For this reason the
function „Open‟ is only available if there is no active connection to a
gateway. As soon as you have established a connection, (File) „Open‟ will
become inactive.
Only one parameter list at a time can be displayed. When you have
opened a local file, the (File) „Open‟ option is disabled. Instead „Close‟,
„Save‟ and „Save As‟ will become available.

3.1.2 Close

This operation closes the parameter list. Whereas a local list can be
closed instantly, closing an online list would also close the connection to
the gateway. After receiving an appropriate warning message, you can
decide whether or not you want to close the list and cancel the
connection.
In case you have made modifications to one or more parameters, you
have to select in a dialog, whether you want to save those modifications,
before the list is eventually closed. Choosing „Yes‟ triggers the same
action as clicking the „Save‟ button. Choosing „No‟ closes the list without
saving potential modifications.

3.1.3 Save

The „Save‟ option is only available, if a valid security token is inserted in

the USB slot of the host PC and the user is logged on with the correct
password.
Clicking on „Save‟ causes the program to save the complete parameter
list to a previously specified local file on your computer., that means ei-
ther the filename has been chosen before („Save As‟ has been executed
once in online mode), or a local parameter file has been opened.
MAN Diesel & Turbo

If no filename has been specified yet, „Save‟ shows exactly the same be-

Ribbon
haviour as „Save As‟.

3.1.4 Save As

The „Save As‟ option is only available, if a valid security token is inserted
in the USB slot of the host PC and the user is logged on with the correct
password.
„Save As‟ saves the complete parameter list to a new file.
Clicking on „Save As‟ opens the save-file-dialog, where you can select in
which folder, under which filename and in which format („edx‟ or „edxx‟)
the complete parameter list shall be saved. On confirming the save-file-
dialog with „OK‟, the complete parameter list is saved to the specified
file on your computer in an encrypted file format.
In case a file with the same name already exists in the selected folder,
you can choose in a dialog whether you want to overwrite that existing
file.

3.2 Controller Tab

Fig. 11 Controller Tab

The „Controller‟ tab includes the „Connection‟ group, which contains an

„Options‟ button and the functions to „Connect‟ to or „Disconnect‟ from
the gateway; the „Access‟ group lets the user choose the „Level‟ and
„Mode‟ he wants to work with; furthermore you find the „Data‟ and the
„Snapshot‟ groups to access the data on the control modules. Depending
on the connection state, some functions are enabled / disabled. The
„Load List‟ and „Send List‟ commands are also accessible via the „Quick
Access Toolbar‟.

3.2.1 Options

Initially the user can adjust the pre-settings for a connection. Clicking on
the „Options‟ button opens the following dialog:
MAN Diesel & Turbo
Ribbon

Fig. 12 Dialog „Connection Options„

With the first option selected, the SaCoSone EXPERT sends out a general
message (so called broadcast) on all its connected and configured
networks to find any available gateways. As the firewall of the gateway
blocks this broadcast and does not respond, the user might have to select
the second option in the dialog and enter the fixed IP address of the
gateway in the field below. Then SaCoSone EXPERT can address the
gateway directly and initiate a communication.

3.2.2 Connect

Clicking on „Connect‟ in the „Connection‟ group causes the program to

connect to the gateway selected in the dropdown list. After successful
connection, an automatic „Load List‟ command is executed. If no data
has been loaded yet, the loading of the parameter list from the gateway
starts immediately. In case there is new (not yet saved) or already
changed data currently displayed, the user will be asked in a dialog
whether he wants to save the current list first.
„Connect‟ is only clickable if there is no active connection, but at least
one gateway module available, and no local file opened.
When you see an available gateway in the dropdown-list but „Connect‟ is
disabled, this indicates that there is a local list being displayed. This list
has to be closed before the parameterization tool can connect to the ga-
teway.

3.2.3 Disconnect

After clicking on „Disconnect‟, the termination of the active connection

is initiated.
Make sure all parameter changes have been completed. In case one
parameter value is still in edit mode, this change cannot be committed
in the controller and the old value is restored in the table display.
„Disconnect‟ is only clickable if there is an active connection.

3.2.4 Level

The „Level‟ button has a drop-down menu that shows the user the levels
that are accessible for the currently attached security token.
MAN Diesel & Turbo

A checkmark indicates the active level. By default the maximum allowed

Ribbon
level is selected. If there is no security token present, only the lowest
level “MinAccess” is displayed. With minimum access rights the number
of visible parameters is strongly restricted and opening or saving
encrypted parameter files is NOT possible at all.

3.2.5 Configure Mode

Not relevant for customer applications.

3.2.6 Load List

„Load List‟ downloads a list of all parameters and operating values from
the gateway that the currently logged on user is entitled to view. The
function is only enabled if a connection to a gateway module is estab-
lished.
When the user presses „Load List‟ while there is already a parameter list
displayed, he will be asked in a dialog whether he wants to save the
current list before loading a new one from the gateway.

3.2.7 Send List

The function „Send List„ can be used to upload a set of changed

parameters from a local edxx-/edx-file from your computer to the
gateway.
For further explanations concerning „Send List‟ please see section 9.3.

3.2.8 Save To Flash

All parameter changes affect the RAMs of the control modules in the first
place and are lost on system shutdown. Clicking on “Save To Flash” trig-
gers the modules to save all values from the RAM permanently in their
flash memory. This way the changes are preserved and used for the next
system start-up.
After the command has been initiated, the SaCoSone EXPERT program is
blocked and the user is informed via status window until the gateway
receives a response message from all connected modules.
The function is only active if a connection is established.

3.2.9 Create Snapshot

A so called „snapshot‟ is a composition of the momentary values for all

parameters and operating values over ALL MODULES AND LEVELS of the
engine control system. Every user in possession of a security token can
create snapshots. The function is only enabled if a connection to a gate-
way module is established.
Please note that for creating and sending a snapshot file a gateway with
firmware version 1.1 or higher is required. For former gateway versions
SaCoSone EXPERT will show an appropriate error message.
Clicking „Create Snapshot‟ opens the save-file-dialog, where you can
select in which folder and under which filename the snapshot shall be
saved. By default the program suggests a standard auto-generated
filename consisting of current date and time to save the snapshot. You
are free to choose any other location and name. In case a file with the
MAN Diesel & Turbo

same name already exists in the selected folder, you can choose in a
Ribbon

dialog whether you want to overwrite that existing file or not.

Confirming the dialog with „OK‟ causes the gateway to send all parame-
ter and opv data for all levels in an encrypted format. Everything is
streamed directly into the previously defined file. A progress bar window
shows the ongoing process.

Fig. 13 Snapshot receiving progress

You know that the creation of the snapshot has been successful, when no
error message appears and at the end of receiving data the text „fi-
nished‟ is displayed in the progress bar window.
The snapshot itself contains the serial numbers for all modules to verify
that it can only be applied to exactly the same (composition of) modules
that it has been taken from.

3.2.10 Send Snapshot

Not relevant for customer applications.

3.3 Tools Tab

Fig. 14 Tools Tab

The „Tools‟ tab contains some useful views and functions to facilitate
monitoring operating values. Some of these functions are only enabled
when a connection to a gateway is established. All of them (except those
in the EDS section) are available in the „Quick Access Toolbar‟ as well.

3.3.1 Trend View

This function is available when a list is loaded from the gateway and the
connection is active. Clicking on „Trend View‟ will open a window where
you can monitor the trend of parameters and operating values graphical-
ly. In the upper part the values are displayed as curves in front of one fix
decadal y-Axis. In the lower part a table shows the recorded parameters
and opvs with id, name, current value, unit, minimum and maximum of
the y-Axis, visibility and color.
MAN Diesel & Turbo

In the context menu of the table you find options to remove the selected

Ribbon
curve or to „Remove All‟ curves from display. The „WatchWindow‟ text-
box lets you adjust the monitored period in seconds, whereat the maxi-
mum captured time is 300 seconds. In addition there is an „Export‟ and
„Record‟ function.
For more detailed information about the „Trend View‟ please refer to
section 5.

3.3.2 Forced Opv View

Not relevant for customer applications.

3.3.3 Watch Opv

Clicking on the „Watch Opv‟ button opens a dialog with all available
operating values arranged in a data tree from which you can select one
for permanent display. This function has exactly the same effect as the
one in the opv bar on the left-hand side of the main application window.
The number of opvs you can monitor simultaneously depends on the
resolution of your screen. For a resolution of 1280x1024 ten opvs can be
displayed, for 800x600 the quantity would be six.
Another option to choose an opv is to use the context menu attached to
every row of the lower table. Here you also have the option to „Watch
Opv‟. The selected opv will be directly added to the permanent display.
To every operating value on display a context menu is attached, which
offers functions to add another opv to the permanent display, „Remove
Selected‟ opv or „Remove All‟ opvs from the opv bar.

3.3.4 Comparison

The „Comparison‟ button is always enabled. Clicking on it opens a new

window where the user can choose two files for comparison and optional-
ly merging.
The „Comparer‟ treats parameter files „edxx‟ and „edx‟ equally. That
means it is possible to compare two „edxx‟ files or two „edx‟ files as well
as a combination thereof.
Independent of which files you have opened, you can either save the
comparison result to a new „edxx‟ or „edx‟ target file. Yet there is one
restriction: With two parameter files „edx‟ as source, it is not possible to
save to a new target file „edxx‟.
Additional filters help the user get an overview of the differences be-
tween the two files. Differences can be in the value or any other proper-
ty of two corresponding items or in the number of items contained in the
files.
For detailed information see chapter 6 about the Comparer.

3.3.5 EDS service

This tool is relevant only to users of the EDS application.

Clicking the „Open Config‟ button lets a configuration file (*.config) to be
selected, containing settings and mappings for the EDS Modbus service.
Once a config file is loaded, the EDS service starts. This service allows
EDS to connect to SaCoSone EXPERT using the Modbus protocol. Opvs are
MAN Diesel & Turbo

mapped to Modbus registers using the mappings in the config file and
Ribbon

their values are sent to the EDS client. This provides a convenient way of
accessing Opv values in EDS when a CAN Modbus connection is otherwise
not available.

Fig. 15 Online EDS service

Also shown after a config file is loaded are the description of the file,
and the TCP port number on which the service is listening. This helps
identify exactly which set of mappings is loaded, and to which port EDS
should send requests to (with port 502 as a default).
To stop the service, click the „Stop service‟ button, which is only enabled
once the service starts.
The EDS service can be started before a gateway is connected, and the
service will continue to run after a gateway is disconnected; however,
connection attempts from EDS will be rejected until a connection exists.
Users should note that config files must be re-loaded each time SaCoSone
EXPERT is re-started; no settings are remembered between sessions. Ad-
ditionally, only Opvs to which the user would normally have access (via
their security token) are sent to EDS. No other data is sent. Parameters
and Alarms cannot be provided to EDS.
Config files will be supplied to users by the relevant department. Errors
in the config file will be reported to the user with an error message to
aid in diagnosis of the problem.

3.4 Customizing Tab

Fig. 16 Customizing Tab

The „Customizing‟ tab includes a „Category‟, a „Node‟ and a „List Item‟

group. All functions in this menu are applicable for creating and editing
user-defined views. A main category containing a complete parameter
list either from the controller or from a local file cannot be changed at
all. Depending on the selected category or the selected rows in a list the
functions in this tab are enabled or disabled.
One category is represented by a clickable stack button with the catego-
ry name on it. On clicking a category button, the respective category is
opened and shown with its attached data tree.
After you have created your own category and data tree (as described for
the „Category‟ and „Node‟ groups), by means of the „List Item‟ group you
can attach parameters and operating values to a tree node.
MAN Diesel & Turbo

On right-clicking a category button a context menu appears, offering also

Ribbon
the functions „New Category‟, „Remove Category‟ and „Rename
Category‟.
On right-clicking an item in the data tree a context menu appears, offer-
ing also the functions „New Node‟, „Delete Node‟ and „Rename Node‟.
On right-clicking a row in the table on the right side, a context menu
appears, offering also the functions „Cut‟, „Copy‟ and „Paste‟.
For more detailed information on how to manage user-defined views
please refer to section 9.8.

3.4.1 New Category

„New‟ calls a dialog where you can define some settings for your own
category. You need to enter a valid category name, all other settings are
optional. Invalid characters in the category name will be reported via an
error message box. You would have to redo the same action with another
name then. On confirming the category dialog, the category with the
given name is created.

3.4.2 Remove Category

„Remove‟ will clear the selected category from your current stack of
categories. Any unsaved changes will be reported via a dialog box and
you are queried whether you want to save the changes to the category.
Pressing „Yes‟ saves the changes, whereas pressing „No‟ removes the
category without saving.

3.4.3 Rename Category

„Rename‟ opens a dialog similar to the one from „New‟ (Category). Now
you can change the settings of the selected category. Again invalid cha-
racters in the category name will be reported via an error message box.

3.4.4 Open Category

„Open‟ shows a folder-browser-dialog, where you can select which

previously created and saved category you want to load. This category is
displayed as a new stack item and is applied on the currently loaded list.
That means all parameters and opvs from the user-defined category that
can be found within the parameter list, will be displayed with all
available properties. Otherwise only the id and name of the parameter
or opv will have the real values, for this is the only information that has
been saved to the category file before. Other properties will not be
available or will show some default settings.

3.4.5 Save Category

„Save Category‟ shows a folder-browser-dialog that lets you save your

own category under any path and name on your PC. The category name is
suggested as filename, but you are free to choose any filename you like.
It is, however, recommended to use the same name for the category and
the file.
MAN Diesel & Turbo

A saved category contains only the unique identifiers and name of the
Ribbon

parameters and operating values within, but no further properties or

values.

3.4.6 New Node

The data tree has one root node which cannot be edited. Below this root
node you can create and build your own data tree. „Add Node‟ creates a
new tree item with “New Item” as the default name and adds it to the
data tree below the currently selected tree node.
As well-known from other Windows applications, „+‟ in front of the node
name means the node is collapsed, „-‟ means the node is expanded.

3.4.7 Delete Node

„Delete‟ erases the tree item instantly without any additional warning or
query.

3.4.8 Rename Node

„Rename‟ puts the selected tree node in edit-mode, so that you can
enter a new valid name. Edit mode also starts when clicking again on an
already selected item. Again invalid characters in the node name will be
reported via an error message box and the old name is restored for the
node. You would have to redo the same action with another name then.

3.4.9 Cut Node

By means of „Cut Node‟ it is possible to move subnodes including their

attached parameters and opvs from one user-defined tree structure to
another.
This is done as follows: First you have to select the node by clicking on
it. Selecting several nodes at a time is not possible.
When the node is selected, you can cut the node from the tree. „Cut
Node‟ removes the selected node from the tree and copies it to the
clipboard. There can only be one selection in the clipboard at a time.
The data tree of the main category cannot be edited. Therefore „Cut
Node‟ can only be enabled in user-defined categories.

3.4.10 Copy Node

The procedure of copying a node from one data tree to another is the
same as cutting a node from a tree. First you have to select the node to
be copied. There can only be one selection in the clipboard at a time.
„Copy Node‟ leaves the node in the source tree unchanged. It only copies
a reference to the selected node to the clipboard. Therefore „Copy‟
works in every category.

3.4.11 Paste Node

If the format is matching, „Paste Node‟ inserts the content from the clip-
board below the currently selected node. Nodes in a user-defined data
tree are not unique. The same node can be added several times.
MAN Diesel & Turbo

The data tree of the main category cannot be edited. Therefore „Paste

Ribbon
Node‟ is only enabled in user-defined categories.

3.4.12 Cut List Item

Before you can cut a row from a table, you have to select the row first.
This is either done by clicking on the small arrow in the header of the
respective row, or by right-clicking on an already selected cell. Selecting
multiple rows is possible by using the „Shift‟ or „CTRL‟ keys.
When the row is selected, you can „Cut‟ the row from the table. „Cut List
Item‟ removes the selected row(s) from the table and copies it/them to
the clipboard. There can only be one selection in the clipboard at a
time.
In the main category it is not permitted to cut a row from a table. As
„Cut List Item‟ would remove the row from the table and the main
category is not editable, „Cut List Item‟ can only be applied on items in a
user-defined category.

3.4.13 Copy List Item

The procedure of copying a row from one table to another is the same as
cutting a row from a table. You have to select the row(s) to be copied
first. There can only be one selection in the clipboard at a time.
„Copy List Item‟ leaves the row(s) in the source table unchanged and only
copies the selected ones to the clipboard. Therefore „Copy List Item‟
works in every category.

3.4.14 Paste List Item

„Paste List Item‟ inserts the content from the clipboard into the current
tabular view. Each row can only be added once to a table.
As „Paste List Item‟ would add an item to a table and the main category
is not editable, „Paste List Item‟ can only be applied in a user-defined
category.

3.5 View Tab

Fig. 17 View Tab

The „View‟ tab provides functions to adjust the look and feel of your
application to your preferences.

3.5.1 Toolbars

In the „Toolbars‟ group you can select which toolbars shall be displayed.
Clicking on „Opv Display‟, for example, shows and hides the toolbar on
the left side of your application. When the check-button is highlighted to
MAN Diesel & Turbo

indicate “checked state”, the respective toolbar is visible. By default all

Ribbon

toolbars are visible and all buttons are highlighted.

3.5.2 Table

In the „Table‟ group you can select the columns you want to have
displayed in the upper or lower table. Clicking on „Name‟, for example,
shows/ hides this column in the active table. A checkmark in front of the
column name indicates that this column is visible.

3.5.3 Application Colors

The „Application Colors‟ group allows you to change the color of your
program‟s user interface. There are eight different application styles and
colors to choose from.

3.6 Other
3.6.1 Application Button

Fig. 18 Application Button

Clicking on the „Exit‟ menu item of the application button is one way to
terminate the application.
All potentially open files are closed and an active connection would be
cancelled before the application shuts down. In detail the actions for
„Close‟ and „Disconnect‟ are performed first, including all related warn-
ing messages.

3.6.2 About

Fig. 19 About Button

Clicking on „About‟ opens a message box that informs you about the
program version you are using, copyright and who to contact in case of
any questions.

4 Context Menus

Context Menus
4.1 Data Tree

Fig. 20 Context Menu Data Tree

The context menu that appears when you right-click on a node in the
explorer-like treeview of a main category (the one that contains online
or file data) offers various functions to build up and manage user
categories.

4.1.1 Collapse Subnodes

„Collapse Subnodes„ is available on any node in the data tree as well as

in the user-defined tree.
Clicking on it collapses all nodes below and the selected node itself.

4.1.2 Expand Subnodes

„Expand Subnodes„ is available on any node in the data tree as well as in

the user-defined tree.
Clicking on it expands all nodes below and the selected node itself.

4.2 User-defined Tree

Fig. 21 Context Menu user-defined Tree

The context menu for a node in the tree view created by a user provides
the same functions as the „Node‟ group in the „Customizing‟ tab.
Please refer to the „Customizing‟ tab section 3.4 for details.
MAN Diesel & Turbo

The two functions to collapse and expand subnodes are described in the
Context Menus

section above.

4.3 User-defined Category

Fig. 22 Context Menu user-defined Category

This context menu pops up when you right-click on a button of a catego-

ry that a user has created. It provides exactly the same functions „New‟,
„Remove‟, „Rename‟, „Open‟ and „Save‟ as in the „Category‟ group of the
„Customizing‟ tab.
Please refer to the „Customizing‟ tab section 3.4 for details on those.

4.4 Data Table

4.4.1 Parameter

Fig. 23 Context Menu original Parameter Table

This context menu for a parameter table contains functions already well-
known from some tabs of the ribbon menu.
For an original table of parameters only the „Copy‟ function – just like
the one from the „List Item‟ group in the „Customizing‟ tab - will be
available to copy this item to a user-view.
Please refer to the „Customizing‟ section 3.4 for details.
MAN Diesel & Turbo

„Add to Trend View‟ resembles the „Trend View‟ function in the „Tools„

Context Menus
tab. Here it does not only open a new trend view window if necessary,
but also adds the selected parameter(s) to the trend view, in case the
user has selected at least one row in the table.
Please refer to the „Trend View‟ section 3.3.1 or one of the „How To…‟
subjects described in the chapters 9.9, 9.11 or 9.12 for details about
monitoring the characteristics of a parameter or opv.

4.4.2 Opv

Fig. 24 Context Menu original Opv Table

For details on this context menu, refer to the one from the parameter
table described above.
In comparison to the context menu of the parameter table there is one
additional function active for the context menu of the opv table: „Watch
Opv‟. While „Watch Opv‟ from the ribbon or the permanent opv display
on the left-hand side of the screen opens a dialog where the user can se-
lect from an opv tree which opv to watch permanently, the command
from the context menu has a slightly different effect. Clicking „Watch
Opv‟ here directly adds the selected operating value to the permanent
opv display at the left-hand side of the application.
Please check the „Watch Opv‟ section 3.3.3 for more details.
MAN Diesel & Turbo

4.5 User-defined Table

Context Menus

4.5.1 Parameter

Fig. 25 Context Menu user-defined Parameter Table

The context menu for a user-defined parameter table looks exactly the
same as for the original table. As the user-defined items are references
to the original parameters, it also behaves the same.
The first three functions „Cut‟, „Copy‟ and „Paste‟ are the same as the
ones from the „List Item‟ group in the „Customizing‟ tab. Please refer to
the „Customizing‟ tab section 3.4 for details.
„Jump to Source‟ is explained in the extra section 4.5.3.
„Add to Trend View‟ is described above.

4.5.2 Opv

Fig. 26 Context Menu user-defined Opv Table

For details on this context menu, refer to the above sections and to the
following section „Jump to Source‟.

4.5.3 Jump to Source

Items in a user-defined table are references to the original parameter or

opv. Therefore jumping to the source of a userview item means to jump
MAN Diesel & Turbo

to the place in the original datatree where the parameter or opv with

Context Menus
this ID can be found.
After clicking on „Jump to Source‟ the data category is selected – this
can be „Online Data‟ or a loaded file. Then the datatree expands the ne-
cessary nodes and the target node is selected. If required, the target
item in the parameter or opv list is highlighted.
Instead of the explicit “Jump to Source” from the context menu, the us-
er can also use a double-click: either in the „Id‟ or „Name‟ column or on
the row header of an item in a user-defined category table.

5 Trend View
Trend View

5.1 General functionality

In the „Tools‟ tab you find a button to display a „Trend View‟. This func-
tion is always available, independent of a connection to a gateway or an
opened parameter list. When you click on any of these buttons, a new
window is opened in which the trend of parameters and operating values
can be displayed as curves.

Fig. 27 Trend View Buttons in Ribbon and Quick Access Toolbar

Besides, every parameter and opv in the tables of the main application
window has the „Add to Trend View‟ option in its context menu. On
clicking, the currently selected parameters and opvs will be added to the
„Trend View‟. Every item can be added several times to allow for
monitoring with a different color and y-axis scaling.
When opening the „Trend View‟ for the first time in one program run, the
parameters and opvs displayed during the last program run, are automat-
ically loaded from a configuration file, including their minimum, maxi-
mum, visibility and color settings.
When closing and re-opening the „Trend View‟, the last displayed curves
are automatically loaded again, including their a.m. settings.
When closing the application, the parameters and opvs that were last
monitored in the „Trend View‟ are saved to a user-specific configuration
file. This way they are made available for the next program start.
The availability of the recorder functions depends on the connection
state. In offline mode with no connection to a gateway it is only possible
to open and view recorder files. All other functions are deactivated. On-
line you can additionally monitor the trend of parameters and opvs. Plus,
you have the option to start a recording and write the displayed curves
to a file for later analysis.
Finally the recorder window can be resized by either clicking the
„Maximize‟ symbol in the header bar to fit in the computer screen, or by
clicking and dragging the lower right window corner with the mouse to
determine the exact size. By means of a splitter positioned between the
2D-graph and the table, each window half can individually be adjusted.

5.2.1 Header Bar

Fig. 29 Trend View – Header Bar

Apart from the application name “SaCoSone EXPERT”, the bar at the top
of the recorder window sometimes shows a filename. The filename is
shown either when a recording has been started and is running or it is
displayed when a recording file has been opened.

5.2.2 Curve Display Panel

Now let us take a closer look at the trend window. In the upper section
the values are displayed as 2D-graph. On start-up the timestamp of the
first curve value is synchronized with the PC time and set as point zero
at the very left side of the trend window. Then the curves gradually
build up from left to right. When the curves reach the right side of the
trend window and thereby the end of the “Watch Window”, they start to
MAN Diesel & Turbo

move continuously from right to left, all new values being displayed on
Trend View

the right.
The decadal y-axis on the left-hand side of the display has a fix raster
and serves as a rough orientation for the user.

Fig. 30 Trend View – Curve Display

When you move with the mouse into the coordinate system and hover
over an area where there is at least one curve, some additional
information is shown in a box in the upper left corner: The „Time
elapsed‟ since starting the trend view and the absolute „Time‟ according
to your computer clock. Underneath the ids for all displayed curves are
shown in their color and with their value for the current mouse position
respectively.

Fig. 31 Trend View – Range in Curve Display

MAN Diesel & Turbo

In the screenshot above you can see that a certain range has been

Trend View
marked. This can be done by clicking in the coordinate system, keeping
the mouse button pressed and moving the mouse to one side. Conse-
quently, the informational text in the upper left corner changes. Now
the „Range‟ that the marked area comprises can be read off in millise-
conds, and for each curve the minimum and maximum values within the
marked range are reported.

5.2.3 Curve Table

Fig. 32 Trend View – Curve Table

The table in the lower section of the trend view window shows the
recorded opvs and parameters with id, name, current value, unit,
minimum and maximum of the y-Axis, visibility and color. By changing
some settings in the table you can adjust the display.
The first four columns are read-only, the latter four can be edited by the
user. „Minimum‟ and „Maximum‟ sets the range of the y-Axis for the
curve. By unchecking „Visibility‟ a curve can be temporarily hidden and
the „Color‟ button lets you choose from a context menu another color for
the curve.
Furthermore the table has a context menu that offers the options to
remove the selected curve(s) with the „Remove Curve‟ button or to
„Remove All‟ curves from display.

Fig. 33 Trend View – Context Menu

It is not possible to sort the curves in the table or change the order of
the table rows.

5.2.4 Watch Window

The „WatchWindow‟ textbox right next to the curve panel lets you adjust
the monitored period in seconds, whereat the maximum time for online
monitoring is 300 seconds (five minutes). Only positive integer values are
valid for input.

5.2.5 Display Group

The available functions are grouped into two sections on the right-hand
side of the recorder window. The buttons in the „Display‟ group all refer
to the view for online monitoring. It is, for example, possible to freeze
the current view or to export or print (in the future) the currently visible
curves.
Depending on the trend state, only the appropriate buttons will be
enabled.
MAN Diesel & Turbo

5.2.6 Recorder Group

Trend View

The second function section is the „Recorder‟ group. All buttons within
have something to do with recording to a file. Here you have for example
the option to start and stop a recording, set an event that triggers a
recorder start (in the future), or to handle recorder files.
Depending on the trend state, only the appropriate buttons will be
enabled.

5.3 Display Group

Fig. 34 Trend View – Display Group

By means of the buttons in the „Display‟ group you can control the beha-
vior of the online trend. When you open the trend view in online mode
with some curves available, the trend is in running state and only stop-
ping the display update is enabled.

5.3.1 Start

„Start‟ will be activated right after „Stop‟ has been pressed and online
trending is paused. As you may guess, „Start‟ reactivates online monitor-
ing and puts the trend back in running state.

5.3.2 Stop

Pressing „Stop‟ freezes the trend display and thereby gives the user the
opportunity to analyze a standstill picture. Underneath the „Curve Dis-
play Panel‟ a scrollbar becomes active. This allows shifting the focus
within the monitored range.
During the stopped state incoming opv values are still logged in the
background. When the user reactivates online monitoring by clicking
„Start‟, there is no gap or loss of information, but continuing curves
showing.
Please note that as soon as on-time recording is stopped by clicking the
„Stop‟ button, underneath the curves‟ area a scrollbar becomes active.
This allows shifting the focus within the recorded range.

5.3.3 Export

In addition there is an „Export‟ function to export kind of a screenshot of

the displayed curves to a CSV-file. These “comma-separated-value” files
can be viewed with any text editor or more comfortably with a
spreadsheet application like MS Excel. „Export‟ is only available, when
MAN Diesel & Turbo

the display update has been suspended by pressing „Stop‟. – Meanwhile

Trend View
recording can still be performed in the background! - After exporting,
the display can be refreshed and initiated again by pressing „Start‟.

5.3.4 Print

This function has not been implemented yet.

5.4 Recorder Group

Fig. 35 Trend View – Recorder Group

The buttons in the „Recorder‟ group control the creation and handling of
recorder files. When you open the trend view in online mode with some
curves showing, the trend is in running state with the „Start Recording‟
and the „Open Recorder File‟ options enabled.

5.4.1 Start Recording

„Start Recording‟ is active when there is at least one curve displayed in

the trend view and no recorder file is open. It does not matter whether
the trend is currently running or paused.
On clicking „Start Recording‟ a folder browser dialog shows where the
user can specify the path and the name of the recorder file to write.
You can tell that a recording is running from the pressed state of the
„Rec‟-button, visualized with orange color (see figure of „Recorder‟
group above) and from the filename in the header bar.

5.4.2 Stop Recording

Naturally „Stop Recording‟ is only enabled when a recording is running.

Clicking on it instantly stops the recording – no additional confirmation
from the user required - and closes the file.

5.4.3 Trigger

This function has not been implemented yet.

MAN Diesel & Turbo

5.4.4 Open Recorder File

Trend View

Opening a recorder file is always enabled, unless a recorder file is al-

ready open or a file is accessed by a running recording.
Pressing „Open Recorder File‟ will call up a folder browser dialog, in
which the user can select the file. The filename is shown in the header
bar as long as the recorder file is open.
Please note that recorder files can be viewed only! Modifications of any
kind are not allowed. The y-axis and color properties can be temporarily
adjusted for display, but this will not be saved in the file.

5.4.5 Close Recorder File

„Close Recorder File‟ is only active when a recorder file is open. Clicking
on it instantly closes the file – no additional confirmation from the user
required.

6 Comparer

Comparer
6.1 General functionality
In the „File‟ section of the „Tools‟ tab the „Comparison‟ feature is pro-
vided. This function works independent of other components of the Sa-
CoSone EXPERT application. Therefore it is always available, whether a
connection to a gateway exists, a parameter list is opened or not. When
you click on any of the „Comparison‟ buttons, a new window is opened in
which two files can be displayed, compared and merged.

Fig. 36 Comparer Buttons in Ribbon and Quick Access Toolbar

The „Comparer‟ tool allows for comparison of two parameter files. Old
and new parameter file formats can be compared. It is possible to com-
pare the same file formats, that are two „edxx‟ files or two „edx‟ files
with each other, as well as a combination thereof.
Independent of the input files, the merge result can be saved to a new
output file optionally as „edxx‟ or „edx‟. Yet there is one restriction:
With two parameter files „edx‟ as source, it is not possible to save to a
new target file „edxx‟.
Please consider that only „SystemDevelopment‟ users are able to open
and save snapshot files „esos‟! Other users will get an error message
when trying.
As common in other comparison tools, the SaCoSone EXPERT Comparer of-
fers the following features:
Differences are highlighted in different colours.
Jumping forward and backward between differences.
Scrolling, selection of nodes and expanding /collapsing of nodes is
synchronized between the two compared datatrees.
Merging file content by setting the „Take value‟ and „Take Item‟ op-
tions adequately.
In addition the „Comparer‟ provides several filter options to enable the
user to focus on specific modules or on parameters only - by hiding other
modules or operating values temporarily.
Please be aware of the following: When comparing files of different user
levels, most likely the file with the higher level will have more parame-
ters and opvs as the file with the lower level. Thus in the datatree of the
lower-leveled file some items may be marked as missing.

Comparer
Fig. 39 Comparer – Quick Access Toolbar

Similar to the main application window, frequently used functions are

available as “quick access” buttons on the toolbar located above the
main menu. Just as in other Windows applications you are free to posi-
tion the quick access toolbar below the ribbon. Unique symbols and a
tooltip text will help you to make the connection between the functions
in the ribbon and the quick access buttons.

6.2.2 Ribbon

Fig. 40 Comparer - Ribbon

In the ribbon on top of the window you find all functions of the „Compar-
er‟ tool. The commands are organized into a set of tabs.
The „Data‟ tab contains all commands for comparison and merging that
are directly related to the files or its content. The „Filter‟ tab provides
the option to reduce the display of the compared data trees, e.g. to spe-
cific modules. The „View‟ tab helps customize the display to the user‟s
needs with some functions on arranging the compared data trees or the
display of an optional difference table.

6.2.3 Base File Display

Comparer

Fig. 41 Comparer – Base File Display

By default the section showing the base file is on the left-hand side of
the „Comparer‟ window, the reference file being shown on the right. In
any case it is visually highlighted with an orange-red frame around it.
The first file opened is automatically set as base file.
The definition of a base file is necessary for differences in item proper-
ties other than value. When merging the file content and saving to a new
file, the information about parameter and opv properties is always taken
from the base file, while the value is set as specified by the user.
This way the „Comparer‟ conforms to the concept of parameterization:
via SaCoSone EXPERT you can always only change the value of a parame-
ter!
MAN Diesel & Turbo

6.2.4 Reference File Display

Comparer
Fig. 42 Comparer – Reference File Display

By default the section showing the reference file is on the right-hand

side of the „Comparer‟ window, the orange-red framed base file being
shown on the left. The file opened second is set as reference file.
That means the values of parameters can be taken from the reference
file for merging and saving to a new file, but all other properties will be
written according to the base file.
Please note in the screenshot above that the tab header is highlighted in
orange, which indicates that this tree is currently selected.

6.2.5 Status Bar

Fig. 43 Comparer – Status bar

The status bar at the bottom of the „Comparer‟ window shows statistics
about the recently performed comparison.
In detail it informs the user about the number of “Value differences”
between the two files. These are the kind of differences that are
expected to vary. For merging the user can select whether to write the
value of the left or the right file.
The “Property differences” count all differences in any other property
than value, e.g. differences in the unit, upper or lower limits or access
MAN Diesel & Turbo

level. These differences cannot be chosen during the merge process, but
Comparer

the content is always taken from the base file.

“Count mismatch” describes the number of items that exist in one file,
but are missing in the other.
Finally these differences are summed up and reported as total number of
differences on the very right side of the status bar.

6.3 Ribbon – File Group

Fig. 44 Comparer – File Group

6.3.1 Open

When starting the „Comparer‟ tool, the (File) „Open‟ option is enabled.
Clicking on it opens the folder-browser-dialog where you can select local
(i.e. on your computer) parameter lists or snapshots to be displayed.
The content of two files can be displayed at a time. As soon as two files
have been loaded, the (File) „Open‟ buttons will become inactive.
Instead „Close‟ and „Save As‟ will become available (as displayed in the
figure above).
Please note that encrypted files can only be opened with an appropriate
security token. That means if the parameter list has been saved with us-
er level 2, it requires a SaCoSone Security Token with user level 2 or high-
er (where 0 is the highest access level) to open it.

6.3.2 Close

This operation closes the file from the currently selected tree. Remem-
ber your current selection is highlighted with an orange tab header. The
content of the tree can be an original „edxx‟, „edx‟ or „esos‟ file or al-
ready the result of a comparison.
Closing the file is also possible by clicking on the small black cross in the
tab header next to the filename.
Be aware that the file closes instantly! There is no warning message or
dialog to rethink your decision.

6.3.3 Save As

This opens the save-file-dialog, where you can select in which folder and
under which filename the new target file shall be saved. In case a file
with the same name already exists in the selected folder, you are
prompted to choose another filename. This way it is assured that no orig-
inal file is accidently overwritten.
The „Save As‟ option is available after two files have been opened and
compared. Yet clicking on it right then and trying to save will trigger an
MAN Diesel & Turbo

error message informing you that you have to define merge settings for

Comparer
all differences first.
On confirming the save-file-dialog with „OK‟, the data is saved according
to your merge settings to the specified local file on your computer in an
encrypted file format with information about the current user level.
Encrypted files can only be opened with an appropriate security token.

6.3.4 Compare

The core feature of this „Comparer‟ tool as the name tells, is to compare
parameter data. The pre-condition for the „Compare‟ button to become
active, is that two files are open.
Clicking on „Compare‟ initializes the comparison of the two datatrees.
Afterwards the display is updated and the comparison result is shown in
two new datatrees side by side of each other.
Differences between two items are highlighted as follows:
Value differences are marked in red. Plus they have an image symbol
in front where the user can set the merge rule.
For property differences (other than value) the whole line is colored
in blue.
Missing items have a red cross instead of text, whereas for the corres-
ponding item on the other side the whole text is red. Additionally
they have an image symbol in front where the user can select wheth-
er to include this item in the new merged file or not.
At this stage of having two files compared, the two datatree displays are
synchronized. That means scrolling in one tree triggers scrolling in the
other. Selecting a node in one tree also selects the corresponding node
in the other. Expanding or collapsing nodes in one tree, equally expands
or collapses the node in the other tree if it exists. Additionally the merge
settings per item are adapted to reflect each other.
One thing you should understand about the logic behind is that the com-
parison works based on the structure of the tree. Step by step a check
for the corresponding parameter at exactly the same place in the other
tree is performed and if so, the parameters are compared. Thereby the
logic gradually walks through all the branches of the trees. Correspond-
ing items are displayed opposite to each other, items existing in one tree
only are displayed as missing in the other.

6.3.5 Compare Fragment

6.4 Ribbon – Difference Group

Fig. 45 Comparer – Difference Group

MAN Diesel & Turbo

6.4.1 Previous Difference

Comparer

The „Previous Difference‟ option is enabled after a successful comparison

where at least one difference could be found.
Clicking on it causes the item selection in the datatree to jump up to the
previous item exposing a difference. In case there are no different items
prior to the currently selected, this is reported in a dialogbox.

6.4.2 Next Difference

The „Next Difference‟ option is enabled after a successful comparison

where at least one difference could be found.
Clicking on it causes the item selection in the datatree to jump down to
the next item exposing a difference. In case there are no more different
items, this is reported in a dialogbox.

6.4.3 Jump To Origin

The „Jump To Origin‟ function fulfills a very specific task. It is only ac-
tive when in the first datatree an item is selected that is missing at this
place compared with the second tree, but is existing in the first one un-
der another parent (and vice versa).
Imagine one node existing in both datatrees but in different places. What
would you expect? Right. You would like to know that! Now, instead of
showing the red cross only as a symbol for a missing item, there is an
additional grayish text next to the red cross, indicating that the item is
somehow known in this datatree, but complete data is not available at
this place. Having such an item selected, the „Jump To Origin‟ option
becomes active. Clicking it causes a jump within the same datatree, to
the actual place of this item.

6.5 Ribbon – Merge Group

Fig. 46 Comparer – Merge Group

6.5.1 Take Value

„Take Value‟ is needed to set the merge rule for one item and thereby to
configure the content of the target file. It is enabled after two files have
been compared and an item with a value difference is selected.
Clicking „Take Value‟ causes the merge symbol of the selected item to
change (from “undefined”) to “export to target file” visualized with a
green arrow pointing outwards. That means this value will be written to
the new merged file. The corresponding item in the other tree should
then show the opposite sign with a red arrow pointing towards, indicat-
ing that that value will be overwritten.
MAN Diesel & Turbo

6.5.2 Take All Values

Comparer
„Take All Values‟ is useful to configure the content of the target file and
to set merge rules for a bunch of items at once. It is enabled after two
files have been compared and value differences exist.
Clicking „Take All Values‟ causes the merge symbols of all items of the
selected tree to change (from “undefined”) to “export to target file”
visualized with a green arrow pointing outwards. That means these val-
ues will be written to the new merged file. All items in the other tree
should then show the opposite signs with a red arrow pointing towards,
indicating that those values will be overwritten.

6.5.3 Take Item

Similar to „Take Value‟ the „Take Item‟ function is needed to set the
merge rule for one item and thereby to configure the content of the tar-
get file. It is enabled after two files have been compared and an item is
selected that exists only in one of the two datatrees.
Selecting „Take Item‟ causes the merge symbol of the selected item to
change (from “undefined”) to “export to target file” visualized with a
checked checkbox. That means this content is written to the new
merged file. The corresponding item in the other tree should then show
the opposite sign with an unchecked checkbox, indicating that that con-
tent will not be written.
Please note that when a missing item is checked, at this place nothing is
written to the target file!

6.5.4 Take All Items

Similar to „Take All Values‟ the „Take All Items‟ function is useful to con-
figure the content of the target file and to set merge rules for a bunch of
items at once. It is enabled after two files have been compared and
there are items that exist only in one of the two datatrees.
Selecting „Take All Items‟ causes the merge symbols of all items to
change (from “undefined”) to “export to target file” visualized with a
checked checkbox. That means the content of these items will be writ-
ten to the new merged file. The corresponding items in the other tree
should then show the opposite signs with an unchecked checkbox, indi-
cating that the content of those will not be written.
Please note that when the missing items are checked, at all these places
nothing is written to the target file!

6.6 Ribbon – Filter Tab

Fig. 47 Comparer – Filter Tab

MAN Diesel & Turbo

The „Filter‟ tab exposes one group called „Opv‟ and one called „Modules‟
Comparer

and is useful to adjust the display of the datatrees.

6.6.1 Opv

By default „Show Opvs‟ is checked. Clicking on the checkbox unchecks it

and refreshes the view. All operating values are hidden and left out of
the comparison. This enables the user to focus on parameter differences.
Putting the checkmark there again causes the opvs to show again.
Please note that the information in the status bar at the bottom of the
„Comparer‟ window does not change! It always shows the total count of
differences, including opvs.

6.6.2 Modules

By default all available modules are checked. Clicking on a checkbox

next to one module unchecks it and refreshes the view. The respective
module is hidden and left out of the comparison. This enables the user to
focus on differences module-wise. Putting the checkmark next to a mod-
ule again causes the module to reappear in the displayed datatrees.
Please note that the information in the status bar at the bottom of the
„Comparer‟ window does not change! It always shows the total count of
differences, including all modules of both files.

6.7 Ribbon – View Tab

Fig. 48 Comparer – View Tab

The „View‟ tab hosts one „Pages‟ group where the arrangement of the
pages can be adjusted.

6.7.1 Pages Arrangement

This function serves to adjust the display. By default the sections show-
ing the file content are arranged horizontally to facilitate easy visual
comparison by putting the two trees opposite to each other. You could
also choose to arrange the files vertically or as a „Single Group‟ having
one file fill the whole space and the other file hide in the background. In
order to have the “Difference Table” displayed next to the compared da-
ta trees, it is recommended to use the „Grid‟ arrangement.

6.7.2 Difference Table

In addition to the pages with the compared data trees, a page with a ta-
ble can be displayed showing the items with differences only. By means
of the “Difference Table” button this table can be shown or hidden.

7 Security Token

Security Token
7.1 Basics
The password-protected security token provides access to the SaCoSone
engine control system using the herein described parameterization
program SaCoSone EXPERT. The user permissions for read and write access
are stored on the token. Without a valid token and password the user is
assigned minimum access rights only (Level “MinAccess”). A connection
to the gateway can be established, yet it is not possible to operate the
engine properly and the view on engine data is very limited. Saving to or
reading from an encrypted parameter file is not feasible at all.
In order to prevent an unauthorized person from reading or even manipu-
lating engine data, it is essential that every user at any time bears some
basic rules in mind:
Handle the token and the corresponding password carefully and con-
fidentially!
Do not allow others to use your token to access MAN Diesel & Turbo‟s
SaCoSone control system or data!
Keep your password protected from any unauthorized person and not
in the same place as your token!

7.2 First-time Token Usage

After you have received your security token along with the password
letter, there is one action that needs to be performed before getting
started using SaCoSone EXPERT.
Please execute the necessary steps as described in the following:

7.2.1 Accept New Certificate Authority SaCoSone.CA

Insert the security token into a free USB slot of your computer. A dialog
opens up informing you about a new certificate authority coming up for
installation.
Check whether the name of the new CA is “SaCoSone.CA” and then con-
firm this dialog with „Yes“. SaCoSone.CA from MAN Diesel & Turbo will
now be registered as trusted certificate authority in your system and all
certificates signed by SaCoSone.CA will be accepted.

7.3 Change Password

On token first use the following dialog window automatically pops up,
forcing you to change the password instantly:

Fig. 50 Change Password dialog from Security Token

MAN Diesel & Turbo

Fill in all fields adequately. Type the start password from your password

Security Token
letter in the “Current eToken Password” field.
Think of a new token password and enter it twice in the other fields.
Your personal password must consist of minimum four digits (characters
or numbers).
When all fields are filled in and the minimum requirements for password
conformity are met, the „OK“-button becomes active. To confirm, click
it once.
In case the dialog is not shown automatically or if you want to change
your password yourself again, you can invoke the dialog by right-clicking
on the token symbol in the statusbar of your computer. From the context
menu select “Change eToken Password”.

7.4 Log On To Security Token

Every time you start the parameterization program SaCoSone EXPERT, this
Log-on dialog will pop up first. To have maximum possible permissions,
please enter your password right away. Without logging in, you will be
assigned minimum access rights only, with which it is virtually impossible
to handle the control system. Working offline with engine data does not
work at all.
You do not only need a valid token to access the SaCoSone control system,
but also the correct password to activate it. This so called two-factor
authentication provides a maximum level of security.

Fig. 51 Log-on Dialog for security token

When the typed-in password meets the minimum requirements for pass-
word conformity, the „OK”-button becomes active. To confirm, click it
once.
The token symbols in the status bar show whether login was successful. A
wrong password entry will be reported by an error message. Please note
that you have a maximum number of 15 retries to enter the correct
password.
By default the level of the security token is selected for login. This is the
maximum available level for this user. The user can at any time volunta-
rily downgrade, which means he can choose to work on a level lower
MAN Diesel & Turbo

than the one he was originally granted. The lower the level, the more
Security Token

limited the view on the parameter set and the ability to change parame-
ters.
Please note: Due to the persistency of the SSL session cache, it is not
possible to detach the security token (connection will be closed) and
afterwards insert the token and initiate a connection again. In this case a
program restart is absolutely necessary.

Fig. 52 Message “Permanent Communication Error”

7.5 Reset Password

After entering the wrong password a number of times, your token gets
locked. By means of a “Challenge-Response procedure” it is possible to
unlock your token from remote, in cooperation with the SaCoSone Hotline.
This is the „Unlock Token‟ dialog you would have to fill in:

Fig. 53 Unlock Token Dialog - Challenge

MAN Diesel & Turbo

The basic idea of this procedure is that on your computer with your to-

Security Token
ken plugged in, you create a challenge code and send it to the Hotline.
From this challenge code, a response code is generated and provided to
you that will unlock your token. After successful reactivation of your to-
ken you can choose a new password.
For details on the procedure and the single necessary steps, please refer
to the relevant “How To” section: 9.16 Reset the password for the secu-
rity token”.

7.6 Token Icons

At the bottom on the right in the status bar of SaCoSone EXPERT there are
two icons. These symbols inform the user about the currently available
actions.
After successful logon to the token, the user can connect to the gateway
with his granted access level and he can save encrypted parameter files.
This is visualized by the green key- and the disk-symbol.

Fig. 54 Status bar with security token symbols

The key symbol indicates three different states by color:

grey: No valid token available.
red: Token available. User not logged on (i.e. password not correct).
green: Token available. User logged on (i.e. password correct).
On double-clicking the red key, the dialog for logging on appears.
On double-clicking the green key, the dialog for changing the password
will be displayed.
The “disk with key” icon symbolizes:
active: Opening and saving of encrypted parameter files „edxx‟ or
„edx‟ is possible.
inactive: Opening and saving of encrypted parameter files „edxx‟ or
„edx‟ is not possible.

Please note that files containing sensitive engine data are encrypted!
„uvx‟ files can be opened and edited with e.g. a text editor. „Hdf‟ files
could be opened with any other „hdf‟ capable program, but are most
comfortably viewed with the built-in SaCoSone EXPERT Trend View. „Csv‟
MAN Diesel & Turbo

files can be opened with any text editor or analyzed with Microsoft Ex-

File Handling
cel.
The encrypted parameter files („edxx‟, „edx‟) and snapshot files („esos‟)
have these variants:

Extension Classification Content

edxx Complete All items for all modules of the system
Module Items from one or more modules
Fragment Random selection of items from all over
the system, no tree structure.
edx Complete All items for all modules of the system

„SystemDevelopment‟ users need to work with partial datasets. Options

to create module specific or fragmented data files are only available for
them. Module or fragmented „edx‟ files can only be edited by „System-
Development‟ users, while module or fragmented „edxx‟ files can be
edited by any token user.

8.3 Parameter Files

Parameter files now come in two slightly different formats: „edxx‟ and
„edx‟. For details on the differences please see the File Types and Con-
tent section 8.1.
The most important point is that the new file format „edxx‟ enables all
users in possession of a security token and password to open all files. For
example a “Service” user can open a file that was saved on “SystemDe-
velopment” level. Please note that the displayed content will only be for
“Service” level! That means there is data in the file that is not visible for
the user.
Whenever there is a file open, which has data not visible for the current
user, SaCoSone EXPERT gives a visual hint. See the orange exclamation
mark in the status bar of the following screenshot. The number of ob-
jects loaded indicates the number of parameters and opvs that the cur-
rent user can see. It is not possible to say how much additional data is
included in the file that the user has no access to.
When hovering with the mouse over the orange warning symbol, a tooltip
shows and informs the user like that: “File level is higher than your cur-
rent user level. Please note that you cannot see the whole file content!”

9 How To
How To

9.1 Establish a connection to a gateway

Make sure your computer is linked up to the gateway with an Ethernet
crossover cable to enable a LAN / Ethernet connection. If the network
interface card of your computer implements automatic MDI/MDI-X
Configuration, a normal patch cable can be used alternatively.
Open SaCoSone EXPERT.
Optionally enter a fixed IP address in the „Options‟ dialog.
Use the dropdown menu in the „Controller‟ tab to select the gateway.
Press the connect button.
Now the program connects to the selected gateway and automatically
loads the parameter list, which is indicated by a loading circle.
In case the gateway is available in the dropdown menu, but the „Con-
nect‟ button is not active, please close a possibly open parameter file.
In case you are experiencing difficulties establishing the network
connection and the gateway is not displayed in the dropdown menu, we
recommend the following:
- Check your network configuration and disable all IP addresses
other than the one you are actually using for the LAN connec-
tion. (Multiple IP addresses, e.g. from Virtual Machines on your
computer can cause a problem.)
- Check your firewall configuration. You could temporarily deacti-
vate a blocking firewall as long as your computer is connected to
the gateway, but do not forget to activate it again as soon as you
want to connect to a public network.

9.2 Load a parameter list from the gateway

Make sure the connection to the gateway is established. Check the in-
formation in the statusbar.
Go to the „Controller‟ tab and press „Load List‟ or click on the corre-
sponding quick access button. In the main area a loading circle shows
the ongoing loading process.
When loading is finished, the data tree appears in the “Online Data”
category.
In case the connection is interrupted during downloading the list, the fol-
lowing error message is shown:
MAN Diesel & Turbo

How To
Fig. 57 Message “Connection interrupted”

9.3 Send a parameter list to the gateway

Make sure SaCoSone EXPERT is running, the connection to the gateway is
active and the parameter list from the gateway has completely been
loaded.
Go to the „Controller‟ tab and press „Send List‟ or click on the corre-
sponding quick access button. In the upcoming folder-browser-dialog
select a matching parameter list from your computer.
Now the list from your computer and the list from the gateway are
compared. The result is shown in a dialog, in which you can see the
conflicting items in a list. This list can be sorted by clicking on a col-
umn header.

Fig. 58 Dialog „Send List – Conflicting Data„

Several conformity checks were performed, including tests whether the

structure of the local list and the quantity and type of parameters match
the data on the controller. The single items are compared by Id. All
conflicts found are reported in various tabs in the dialog.
MAN Diesel & Turbo

Possible conflicts are in detail:

How To

Conflict Significance
Difference in Value Ok. This new value will be sent.
No Access to Parameter Attention! You do NOT have sufficient
write permission!
Not found in local list The local list does not contain all pa-
rameters that are on the controller.
Not found in controller Attention! The local list contains parame-
ters that do NOT exist in the controller.
Value exceeds limit The new value exceeds the upper or
lower limit of the parameter and cannot
be set.
Difference in Name The parameter from the local file has
Difference in Type another name / type / level / unit / upper
Difference in Level limit / lower limit than the corresponding
Difference in Unit one on the controller.
Difference in Upper Limit
Difference in Lower Limit

If the new value of a parameter exceeds its lower or upper limit, this
parameter will not be listed in the “Difference in Value” tab, since it
cannot be changed in the controller anyway.
Likewise value differences of parameters with a “Difference in Type”
will be completely disregarded, for they do not match at all. It does not
make sense to overwrite map values with curve values for example.
There is no longer any correlation between such parameters except for
having the same id.
Please note that the axes of curves and maps cannot be changed. An
intended axis change will be reported as “No Access to Parameter” and
not one curve or map value will be written.
Look carefully at the tabs and double-check whether it is safe to
write the values from your list to the controller!
Knowing about minor or major conflicts, at this point you still have the
possibility to decide if the values on the controller shall be overwritten
or not.
Clicking “Send All” or “Send Selected” will send the (selection of)
values to the controller.
The „Send Report„ status window gives you an overview of several para-
meter counts:
MAN Diesel & Turbo

How To
Fig. 59 Message “Send Report“

“Values to send” displays the total number of parameters to be set and

should not change during the sending process. You should be able to see
the number of sent parameters grow quickly, the number of not con-
firmed parameters decrease, while the number of confirmed parameters
also grows. Usually there should be no parameter refused.
Description in detail:
Values to send: Total number of parameters to be changed.
Values sent: Number of parameters that have been sent to the gate-
way for change.
Values not confirmed: Response from controller is still pending.
Values confirmed: Parameter value was set.
Values refused: Parameter value could NOT be set in controller.
At the end of the sending process, “Values sent” should be equal to
“Values confirmed”. This verifies that all parameters that have been
sent were confirmed.
Additionally you can monitor the progress in the status bar, where a text
informs you how many parameters are in “Changing” state.

9.4 Change parameters

Fig. 60 Parameter Change

One table contains all parameters of the selected function. When a cell
displaying a numeric value is editable, it will have up and down arrows
on its right border. Cells displaying Boolean values have a black “TRUE” /
“FALSE” text when they are editable and they are greyed-out if they are
not.
MAN Diesel & Turbo

To change a numeric value, you can either enter the cell to edit and ma-
How To

nually type in a new value or you can use the numeric up/down controls.
For each value there is one numeric up/down arrow to increment or
decrement the value by one percent of the range - whereas the range is
defined as the difference between upper and lower limit.
When changing a parameter value the upper and lower limits always
have to be observed. Using the up/down arrows, you cannot go beyond
the limits. For manual editing, the value is only changed and sent to the
controller if it lies within the given limits.
The new value is valid
For manual editing: on pressing the return key (leave cell edit-mode).
For using the up/down arrows: instantly on arrow click.
For Boolean cell: instantly on double-clicking in the cell.
Leaving cell edit mode by any other way than the „Return‟ key does not
change the cell value. E.g. when using the tabulator or the mouse to go
to another program section, the old cell value is restored.
After a new value has been sent to the controller, but has not been
confirmed yet, this is shown by the “Changing” state and a yellow row
background.
Generally, after having changed the value, the parameter state changes
from “Ok” to “Changing” and the row is highlighted in yellow. (See fig-
ure “Parameter change” above.) This means the controller has not con-
firmed the new value yet. As soon as the controller sends the parameter
value back, this controller value is displayed and the row color changes
back to normal.
First of all these changes affect the current controller program and
would be lost when rebooting the system. In case values have to be
saved in the controller for the next start-up, you must click the „Save To
Flash‟ button in the „Controller‟ tab.

9.5 Change curve and map parameters

In the parameter table there are also editable curves and maps availa-
ble. These cells have a button to access the content behind. A black but-
ton text means the values from this curve or map are editable, a greyed
out button means the curve or map can be viewed only.

Fig. 61 Map Button in Parameter Table

To edit curves or maps, you have to click on the “Curve” or “Map” but-
ton in the value column first to open a dialog like the following:
MAN Diesel & Turbo

How To
Fig. 62 Dialog for Changing a Curve

Fig. 63 Dialog for Changing a Map

All inputs have to be made via keyboard entry. Instantly on change the
graphical display is updated. By means of the 2D or 3D display the user
can check the trend of the curve or map and easily detect any devia-
tions.
Please note that for safety reasons axes can only be changed in engine
configuration mode and only strictly increasing!
Every change of a single value is immediately sent to the controller if it
lies within the upper and lower limit. In case you ignore the upper or
lower limit by mistake, an error message appears informing you how to
proceed. There is no limit check on the axes.
All changes affect the current controller program and would be lost when
rebooting the system. To save values in the modules for the next start-
up, you need to execute „Save To Flash‟.

9.6 Save changes permanently in the control modules

All parameter changes affect the RAM of the controller in the first place.
These changes are lost when rebooting the controller. In case you want
to make a permanent change, you can achieve this by saving the changes
to the flash of the controller.
MAN Diesel & Turbo

By clicking the „Save To Flash‟ button in the „Controller‟ tab all control-

lers connected to the gateway receive the command to save the values
from the RAM permanently in the flash.

Note
Frequent flashing reduces the lifetime of the flash!

9.7 Manage local parameter lists

After you have loaded a parameter list from the gateway, you can save
this list to a file on your computer. Clicking on „Save As‟ in the „Data‟ tab
or on the corresponding quick access button, opens the save-file-dialog.
Here you can specify the folder and the filename for the list. In case a
file with the same name already exists in the selected folder, you can
choose in another dialog whether you want to overwrite that existing file
or not.
The file extensions for parameter lists are “edxx” or “edx”. Such a file
contains the structure of all previously loaded parameters and operating
values. Parameters are saved with all their characteristics. Operating
values are saved with their id and name only.
Clicking on „Save‟ causes the program to save the complete list to a pre-
viously specified local file on your computer. If no filename has been
specified yet, „Save‟ works just like „Save As‟ and lets the user choose a
file path and name where to save.
Of course, you can view and edit a saved list again. By clicking „Open‟ in
the „Data‟ tab or on the corresponding quick access button, the folder-
browser-dialog shows, where you can select an appropriate file. From
the filename of the local parameter list, a new category is created. In
this category a data tree is built and all available parameters and
operating values are loaded. Parameters can be changed within their
limits. Such a modified list can be saved again under the same or another
name using „Save‟ or „Save As‟.
Only one parameter list can be opened at a time. If there is a local list
opened, it is neither possible to open another, nor to load a list from the
controller at the same time.

9.8 Create and manage user-defined categories

In the parameterization tool SaCoSone EXPERT you have the possibility to
create reusable views on parameter lists. In a new category you can
build your own structural tree, name every node as you like and assign
parameters and operating values for the tabular display. Here is how you
can do that in detail:
MAN Diesel & Turbo

How To
Fig. 64 Dialog “New Category”

Clicking „Category‟ – „New‟ in the „Customizing‟ tab or selecting „New

Category‟ from the category context menu opens the dialog shown
above. Here you have to specify a name for the new category and
optionally indicate a title, description and an image. The category name
acts as an identifier and must therefore be unique within the program.
On confirming the dialog the new category is created according to the
specifications made. In case a category with the given name already
exists, an error message appears and the new category cannot be
created.

Fig. 65 User-defined Category – Step 1

By means of the functions from the „Node‟ group in the „Customizing‟ tab
or the functions from the context menu in the data tree, you can add,
rename and remove nodes and thereby step-by-step build your own
customized tree structure. Edit mode for renaming a node can also be
started by clicking again on an already selected node.
MAN Diesel & Turbo
How To

Fig. 66 User-defined Category – Step 2

After you have set up your preferred tree structure, it is time to add
some parameters and opvs to your tables. Here the „List Item‟ group in
the „Customizing‟ tab or the context menu from the table comes in han-
dy.
Mark at least one row in a table in the main category (or in a user-
defined view) and click „Copy‟. Then change over to the tree structure in
your category, select a node and click „Paste‟. To remove a row from
your self-defined table, select that row and click „Cut‟.

Fig. 67 User-defined Category – Step 3

By means of „Category‟ – „Save‟ from the „Customizing‟ tab you can save
the currently selected user-defined category in any folder under any
name on your computer. The format for user-defined categories is XML,
the file extension is “.uvx” (User-View-XML). A userview only contains
the tree structure of the selected parameters and operating values with
their ids and names.
Equally you can load previously defined and saved userviews into the
parameterization tool by means of „Category‟ - „Open‟ from the
„Customizing‟ tab. If only a user-defined category is loaded, only the
tree structure, ids and names of all data can be restored. A userview
never contains any data itself, but it is always applied to and refers to
the list currently loaded in the program (local or from the controller).
MAN Diesel & Turbo

The commands „Remove Category‟ and „Rename Category‟ are only

How To
available for all user-defined categories. A complete list loaded from a
local file or from the gateway can neither be renamed nor removed.

9.9 Search for a Parameter or Opv

Fig. 68 Search bar

The search function is available online and offline, when „Online Data‟ is
loaded or a local file („edxx‟, „edx‟ or „esos‟) is open. The visibility of
the search toolbar can be adjusted in the „View‟ ribbon tab.
The whole datatree is searched. The search logic automatically looks for
partial correlations, not for exact matches and it is not necessary to ex-
plicitly put an asterisk in place.
In the search text box, the user can type in any search string. After
pressing „ENTER‟ or clicking on the „Search for ID or Name‟ button next
to the textbox, the search is performed.

Fig. 69 “ Search Result” category

MAN Diesel & Turbo

If the search was successful, a new category “Search Results” is created

How To

where all matching parameters and opvs are displayed. In case there
were no matches found, this is reported via dialog box.

Fig. 70 Dialog “Search - Not found”

The “Search Results” category behaves similar to categories created by a

user: it can be renamed, saved to file and it can be removed. The only
difference is that there is no reminder to save the category before re-
moving. When performing another search the previous “Search Results”
are overwritten without any further notice as well.
The matching parameters and opvs found are displayed as a list just un-
der the root node of the “Search Results” category. Depending on the
search string this list can get very long. Surely the user would like to
know where the respective item is arranged in the original datatree. This
can be achieved by the “Jump to Source” function from the table con-
text menu.

Fig. 71 “Jump to Source” in Context Menu

From the “Search Results” – just as from any other user-defined category
– it is possible to easily jump to the original item in the datatree. All
items in the “Search Results” table are references to the original para-
meter or opv. After clicking on „Jump to Source‟ the data category is se-
lected – this can be „Online Data‟ or a loaded file. Then the datatree
expands the necessary nodes and the target node is selected. If applica-
ble, the target item in the parameter or opv list is highlighted.
Instead of the explicit “Jump to Source”, the user can also use a double-
click: either in the „Id‟ or „Name‟ column or on the row header of an
item in a user-defined category table.
MAN Diesel & Turbo

9.10 Monitor the trend of an operating value online

How To
Prerequisite for monitoring operating values surely is SaCoSone EXPERT
being in online mode: a connection to a gateway must be established and
a list loaded.

Fig. 72 Trend View Buttons in Ribbon and Quick Access Toolbar

In the „Tools‟ tab as well as in the quick access toolbar on top of the
application window, you find a button to show a „Trend View‟. When you
click on either of these buttons, a new „Trend View‟ window comes up in
which the values of parameters and operating values are displayed as
curves. Every parameter and opv in the tables of the main application
window has the „Add to Trend View‟ option in its context menu. This will
add the currently selected parameter or opv to the display.
Every opv can be added several times to the trend view, e.g. with differ-
ent y-axis scaling. When closing and re-opening the „Trend View‟, the
last displayed curves are automatically loaded again including their min-
imum, maximum, visibility and color settings.

Fig. 73 Trend View

The „WatchWindow‟ textbox below the curve display panel on the right
side lets you adjust the displayed time range in seconds, whereat the
maximum recorded time is 300 seconds (five minutes).
MAN Diesel & Turbo

When you move with the mouse into the coordinate system and hover

over an area where there is at least one curve, some additional informa-
tion is shown in a box in the upper left corner: The „Time elapsed‟ since
starting the trend view and the absolute „Time‟ according to your com-
puter clock. Underneath the ids for all displayed curves are shown in
their color and with their value for the current mouse position respec-
tively.
The table in the lower section of the trend view window shows the
recorded opvs and parameters with id, name, current value, unit,
minimum and maximum of the y-Axis, visibility and color. By changing
some settings in the table you can adjust the display.
Furthermore, the table has a context menu that offers options to remove
the selected curve(s) or to „Remove All‟ curves from display. It is not
possible to sort the curves in the table or to change the order of the ta-
ble rows.

Fig. 74 Trend View – Context Menu

When closing and re-opening the trend view, the last monitored curves
are automatically loaded including their minimum, maximum, visibility
and color settings.
For more detailed information on the SaCoSone EXPERT „Trend View‟,
please refer to chapter 5.

9.11 Record the trend of an operating value

Prerequisite for recording the trend of operating values is SaCoSone
EXPERT being connected to a gateway with a parameter list loaded. For
preparation please execute the following steps:
Open a „Trend View‟ by clicking on either of the available buttons!
Arrange the curves and set the curve properties to your needs!
(For both steps refer to chapter 9.10)

Fig. 75 Trend View – Recorder Group: „Start Recording‟

Now the „Rec‟ function from the „Recorder‟ group at the bottom of the
recorder window should be available. Simply click on it and thus a

folder-browser-dialog is opened. Here you can select the path and define

How To
the name of the recorder file. On confirming the dialog, recording is
started.

Fig. 76 Trend View with recording running

You can tell that a recording is running from the orange-colored „Rec‟-
button in the „Recorder‟ group and the filename displayed in the header
bar of the trend view.

9.12 View a recording offline

The function to view a recording is absolutely independent of program or
connection state. Simply start SaCoSone EXPERT and open a „Trend View‟
by clicking on either of the available buttons! (Refer to chapter 9.10)
Even if there is no curve in the online trend view, the „Open Recorder
File‟ button is active. Clicking it will invoke a folder-browser-dialog
where you can select an appropriate recorder file for offline display.
MAN Diesel & Turbo
How To

Fig. 77 Trend View – Recorder Group: „Open Recorder File‟

After the data has been loaded into the curve display panel, the user has
the possibility to scroll by means of a slider within the complete record-
ed range. This way he can perform a detailed analysis of the recorded
data.
Like in running state, you get additional information shown in a box in
the upper left corner when hovering with the mouse over an area where
there is at least one curve.

Fig. 78 Trend View with File displayed

While a file is open, „Close Recorder File‟ is the only available option of
the trend view functions.
Please note that recorder files can be viewed only! Modifications of any
kind are not allowed. For display the y-axis and color properties can be
temporarily adjusted, but this will not be saved in the file.

9.13 Compare two files

How To
Fig. 79 Comparer Buttons in Ribbon and Quick Access Toolbar

In the „Tools‟ tab as well as in the quick access toolbar on top of the
main application window, you find a button to start a „Comparison‟.
Please click on either of these buttons, so that a new „Comparer‟ window
comes up in which two files can be compared, displayed opposite to each
other and merged.
The empty „Comparer‟ window shows:

Fig. 80 Comparer – empty, nothing loaded

As you can easily see, the only available function is to „Open‟ a file. So
this is what you do! In the folder-browser-dialog select a parameter file
or snapshot according to your level from your local drive and open it. Af-
ter a short time of loading, the file content shows in a datatree:

How To

Fig. 81 Comparer – 1 file loaded

Have you noticed that another option has become available? Now you
could also „Close‟ the file.
For comparison we need another file to compare with, so please click on
„Open‟ again and select the file you want to compare with. Two files are
loaded now:

Fig. 82 Comparer – 2 files loaded

In addition to the „Open‟ and „Close‟ functions, now „Compare‟ is

enabled. Please click on it and within seconds you will get the compari-
son result displayed. The first item with a difference will be selected in

at the bottom.

Fig. 83 Comparer – 2 files compared

By means of „Previous Difference‟ and „Next Difference‟ you can easily

navigate between the differences in the datatree. Visual highlighting
helps you identify the kind of difference.

9.14 Merge two files

First compare the two files and begin by executing the steps as described
in the previous chapter. Starting from here, please put your attention to
the functions from the „Merge‟ group.
MAN Diesel & Turbo
How To

Fig. 84 Comparer – value difference selected

Assuming that you have compared two files that actually have differenc-
es, please select an item with a difference in the value ( - blue text, the
value difference additionally highlighted in red.). After comparison the
merge rule for all different items is “undefined”. Now it is your task to
set merge rules for all differences according to your needs.
Here is the meaning of the merge symbols for value differences:
“undefined” No merge rule specified yet.
“export to target file” This value will be written to the new
merged file.
“overwrite in target file” That value is overwritten and does not
appear in the new merged file.

Similar to value differences, here is the meaning of the merge symbols

for item differences:
“undefined” No merge rule specified yet.
“export to target file” The content of this node is written to the
new merged file – might be empty!
“overwrite in target file” The content of that node is not written
and can be ignored.
MAN Diesel & Turbo

How To
Fig. 85 Comparer – item difference selected

Optionally you can use the „Take All Values‟ or „Take All Items‟ function
to mark all parameters from one file for export. Please pay attention
that these functions are executed for the whole currently selected data-
tree!
After having set merge rules for all differences it is time to save your
merge result. Therefore please click on „Save As‟, specify a new file
name and confirm with „Save‟ in the save-file-dialog.
Open the new created file again – in the SaCoSone EXPERT main window or
in the „Comparer‟, just as you like – and check whether the content is as
expected!

9.15 Change the password for the security token

There are two ways to invoke the dialog for changing the security token
password.
You could select “Change eToken Password” from the context menu of
the token symbol in the status bar of your desktop. This option becomes
available as soon as a token is inserted.

quately. Type your active security token password in the topmost text-
box. After that, think of a new one and enter it twice in the other fields.
Your personal password must consist of minimum four digits (characters
or numbers).
When all fields are filled in and the minimum requirements for password
conformity are met, the “OK”-button becomes active. Click once to con-
firm.

9.16 Reset the password for the security token

After entering the wrong token password a number of times, the SaCoSone
token gets locked for security reasons. Via a so called “challenge-
response” procedure, it is possible to reset the password from remote.
Therefore the user has to send data to the token administrator, who
generates an unlock code that he again sends back to the user.
If your token becomes locked, you need to do the following:
Contact the SaCoSone hotline, describe your problem and make sure a
responsible person is available who can help you out.
If possible connect your computer to the internet, to be able to send
and receive email. Transmitting the unlock code via telephone is also
feasible, yet more complicated and error prone.

In the taskbar at the bottom on the right-hand side of your computer

screen, you see the SafeNet icon:

10 FAQ
FAQ

10.1 Connection
10.1.1 “Connect button is greyed out.”

There are several reasons why the “Connect”-button may not be availa-
ble:
Cause: The gateway module is down.
Solution: Make sure the gateway module is operating by checking its
LEDs.
Cause: No network connection.
Solution: Check if LAN cable is connected.
Cause: Your network interface card does not automatically detect which
cable is used and does not establish any connection to the network.
Error detection: You know that a connection could be established, when
the symbol with the two monitors in the task bar at the bottom right of
your PC display shows “ok” state, like this:

Fig. 95 Connection symbols in PC taskbar on different Windows systems

Solution: Use a crossed LAN cable (with red plugs).

Cause: The PC firewall blocks SaCoSone EXPERT. On starting the program,
it scans for available gateways. If the UDP messages between SaCoSone
EXPERT and the gateway are blocked by the firewall, the gateway will
never be identified.
Error detection: If a connection is established (see example above), the
firewall most probably is the problem.
Solution: Change your firewall settings.
Procedure for new VPN clients: If you have local admin permission on
your notebook, the program “setup_fw.exe” enables you to switch off
the firewall temporarily for establishing a connection to an engine
control system.

10.1.2 SaCoSone EXPERT loses connection on standby

Description: When the computer or notebook that SaCoSone EXPERT is

running on goes to standby mode, the application loses the connection to
the gateway!
Cause: The reason for this problem is in the nature of „Windows‟. Stand-
by is supposed to turn off devices to save power. There is mostly no way
to keep any network connections live while in standby.
Depending on your operating system, configuration, network adaptors
and drivers, there are the following solutions:
First you might try this:
MAN Diesel & Turbo

Change the settings of your network adaptor.

FAQ
„Device manager‟ - Properties of „network adaptor‟.
Deselect both options:
- “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.”
- “Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby"
If this does not help and SaCoSone EXPERT still loses the connection, the
only solution is to prevent standby mode.
Change the power settings of your notebook
Tab „Energy scheme‟: For the active energy scheme as well as for both
battery and mains operation, set “Standby” to ”Never”.
Tab „Extended‟: Set “On closing the notebook” to “Do nothing”.
These settings are essential, because with the introduction of recording
the trend of operating values you want to keep the recording running, no
matter what!

10.1.3 Connection Error

Description: When trying to connect to the gateway with the security

token inserted, the following error message occurs:

Fig. 96 „Error verifying user certificate‟ message

Cause: The SaCoSone.CA has not been installed correctly in the certifi-
cate store of the computer.
Solution: Reboot the computer. As soon as the USB token is inserted, a
dialog appears, asking whether the SaCoSone.CA certificate is to be
installed on the computer. Confirm with „Yes‟. (For details refer to 7.2.1
Accept New Certificate Authority SaCoSone.CA.)

10.1.4 Token not recognized

Description: When the security token is inserted, there is no password

dialog coming up. Actually there is no reaction at all from the program.
It seems like SaCoSone EXPERT does not recognize the token.
Cause: This happens after uninstalling and installing SaCoSone EXPERT
with the security token inserted and no reboot in between.
Solution: Remove the security token. Reboot the computer. Afterwards
run the SaCoSone EXPERT setup in „Repair‟ mode, in order to install the
token-related files.

11 Installation & Technical Assistance

Installation & Technical Assistance

11.1 Installation
11.1.1 Prerequisites

Before beginning with the SaCoSone EXPERT installation, make sure you
are in possession of:
- Setup package SaCoSone EXPERT V1.45 or higher
- USB Token from MAN Diesel & Turbo for access to the SaCoSone
engine control system (access level is stored on the security to-
ken.)
- Start password for the security token.
Verify that the PC complies with the system requirements as stated in
chapter 1.2.
It is essential during the installation that the security token is NOT
inserted. Remove any present token from the computer where SaCoSone
EXPERT is to be installed!
In case of an upgrade or uninstallation, make sure SaCoSone EXPERT is
NOT running!

11.1.2 Installation Packages

SaCoSone EXPERT is distributed via two different setup packages.

The first is the full installer, which comes with all files and dependencies
required to install and run SaCoSone EXPERT. This includes the .NET
Framework 4 and software to recognize and handle security tokens, as
well as other Microsoft libraries upon which SaCoSone EXPERT depends.
As all required files are provided, this installer has the benefit of being
standalone, so should be downloaded where the internet connection is
good enough to download the 110Mb file.
The full installer should be used the first time SaCoSone EXPERT is in-
stalled on a computer, or if the application is to be installed on a com-
puter with limited internet access.
The second setup package contains just the SaCoSone EXPERT files, and no
other libraries or redistributables. This means that it is much smaller
(around 13Mb) so it can be downloaded when the internet connection is
bad. However, it cannot be used if dependencies required by SaCoSone
EXPERT are not present on the computer on which installation is being
attempted.
This installer can be used if SaCoSone EXPERT is being upgraded from a
version with identical software prerequisites. If you are unsure if the
prerequisites have changed, the full installer should be used. If the pre-
requisites change for a new version of SaCoSone EXPERT, then this second
installer package may not be suitable.
Please note that both installers can be used to install, upgrade and un-
install SaCoSone EXPERT.
MAN Diesel & Turbo

11.1.3 Install SaCoSone EXPERT

Installation & Technical Assistance

Execute the SaCoSone EXPERT setup to install the program on the com-
puter. During installation, follow the on-screen instructions in the setup
program. The setup program is similar to that of other Windows pro-
grams.
When using the full install package, the .NET Framework might prove
time-consuming to install. Please be patient in case of a waiting time of
several minutes. Driver installation for the security token should take
less than a minute.
Make sure that during installation the security token is NOT inserted.

11.1.4 Update SaCoSone EXPERT

Execute the SaCoSone EXPERT setup to update an existing program version

on the computer. The on-screen instructions will guide you through the
update process. During an update existing file paths are preserved, while
the program folder, all files and icons related to SaCoSone EXPERT are
overwritten. Afterwards you will find everything in the same place as you
are already used to.
An update should not take longer than a few minutes. Please be patient
during the check for the .NET Framework.
Make sure that during the update SaCoSone EXPERT is NOT running and
the security token is NOT inserted.

11.1.5 Uninstall SaCoSone EXPERT

Uninstalling can be initiated by the setup program of SaCoSone EXPERT or

via „Software‟ (Windows XP) or „Programs and Features‟ (Windows 7) in
the control panel of the computer. The on-screen instructions will guide
you through the uninstalling process. During uninstalling the program
folder, all program files, icons and registry entries related to SaCoSone
EXPERT are removed.
Make sure that during uninstalling SaCoSone EXPERT is NOT running and
the security token is NOT inserted.
After uninstalling, please reboot the computer.

11.1.6 First Time Usage
