Descriptive Text

A. Definition of Descriptive Text

Descriptive text is a text that describes a particular object in detail. Dalam bahasa Indonesianya, descriptive
text atau teks deskripsi adalah sebuah teks yang mendeskripsikan objek tertentu secara rinci.

B. Purpose of Descriptive Text

The purpose of descriptive text is to describe an object in detail. Tujuan dari descriptive text adalah
mendeskripsikan atau menggambarkan suatu objek secara detail (rinci). Objek-objek ini bisa berupa orang, hewan,
benda, atau tempat.

C. Structure of Descriptive Text


There are two Structures of Descriptive Text :
1. Identification or General Statements. It introduces or identifies specific object.
2. Descriptions: The parts of a text describe the object characteristics, appearances, personality, habits or
qualities.

D. Social Functions of Descriptive Text


1. To give information about a particular entity by describing its features, history, and special characteristics.
2. To give information about things by describing physical attributes, behaviours, uses, etc.

E. Language Features of Descriptive Text


1. The use of the adjective (an adjective) to clarify the noun, for example: a beautiful beach, the famous place
in Jepara, etc.
2. The use of simple present tense: The sentence pattern used is simple present because it tells the fact of the
object described.
3. Adverb of Frequency adalah kata keterangan yang berguna untuk menunjukkan seberapa sering suatu
kegiatan dilakukan. Berikut contoh dari Adverb of Frequency :

Often Sering
Sometimes Kadang-kadang / terkadang

F. Example of Descriptive Text

My Best Friend, Hanni

Identification:

Let me introduce you to my best friend. Her name is Hanni. She is my classmate in Junior High School. She is
thirteen years old.

Description:

Hanni is so pretty. She has an oval face, rounded eyes, pointed nose, and beautiful black long hair. Her skin color is
fair. Also, she has a slim body and is quite tall. She is 155 centimeters tall.

Hanni really loves to sing and dance. She joins the dance club as her extracurricular activity at school. She is smart
and friendly. She often helps me to do my homework and always respects the elders. Everyone loves her.
Singapore

Singapore is a South-east Asian country located between Malaysia and Indonesia. Despite its small size,
Singapore is known for its transition as a third-world country to the first-world country. Singapore also was known
as the Asian Tiger economy, based on external trade and its workforce. Singapore size is not as big as Indonesia,
but the city ranks highly in numerous international rankings for its education, entertainment, finance, healthcare,
human capital, innovation, logistics, manufacturing, technology, tourism, trade, and transport.

Singapore is home to 5.6 million people with a diverse culture. Majority ethnic groups in Singapore are
Chinese, Malay, and Indian. Singapore Independence Day was on the 9th of August 1965. Merlion Statue is the
official mascot of Singapore. Singapore is famous for its Garden by the Bay, Marina Bay Sands, dan Orchard
Road.
