INTRODUCTION AND EXERCISES

1. In this class we will spend a lot of time LISTENING and SPEAKING (pronouncing). We will do other
activities, but these are especially important exercises when learning a language.
2. REGULAR VOCABULARY HOMEWORK:
Look for words or phrases highlighted in yellow in the handouts that I distribute. At home, write these
down in a separate vocabulary section of your English notebook. Then, use an English dictionary to
look up the definition (or meaning) and write it next to the word or phrase. You will not complete this
assignment by next week; do as much as you have time for. There will be vocabulary quizzes every
week. Students will grade each other’s quizzes.
3. GRAMMAR, Syntax (Sentence Structure), and VOICE or TONE: We will dedicate at least 20
minutes each week working on sentence structure (or syntax), grammar (focusing on common
grammatical errors (e.g., dangling modifiers), avoiding vagueness in writing, avoiding inappropriate use
of the passive voice, and punctuation, focusing on common errors (e.g., misplacing apostrophes)

TIP:
