ABSTRACT

This study investigated the effect of advanced organizers on academic


performance and retention of Kinetic theory of matter concept among basic
science and technology students in Uyo. Four specific objectives, four research
questions and four hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The study
adopted pretest, posttest, control group quasi-experimental design. The students in
experimental group were taught using advance organizers teaching strategy
while those in control group were taught using expository teaching method. The
population consisted of 2,010 junior secondary two (JSS2) basic science and
technology Students for 2023/2024 academic session in Uyo while the sample
size comprised two hundred (200) junior secondary two (JSS2) basic science and
technology students in four intact classes drawn from four co- educational
secondary schools in the study area using simple random sampling technique
involving balloting method. A 20 item multiple choice test, kinetic Theory of
Matter Performance Test (KTMPT) developed by the researcher was used to
collect data for the study. The reliability co-efficient of the instrument was 0.88
determined using test-retest method. The data obtained from all the tests were
analyzed using mean, standard deviation and independent t-test. The findings of
the study revealed that students in experimental and control groups were
homogeneous at the commencement of the experiment. There was a significant
difference in the mean performance and retention scores of basic science and
technology students taught using advance organizers and those taught using
expository teaching method in favor of the students taught using advance
organizers. The findings also indicated that, there was no significant effect of
gender on the mean performance and retention scores of basic science and
technology students when exposed to advance organizers. Based on the results
of the findings, it was recommended among others that the use of advance
organizers teaching strategy should be encouraged among junior secondary
school basic science and technology teachers in teaching abstract concepts
where prior knowledge is lacking.
