Introduction (Background):

Conservation tourism has become a significant aspect of sustainable development in Zambia,

with various districts having immense potential for tourism growth. Conservation tourism is a
growing trend globally, with many tourists seeking unique and educational experiences that
combine travel with conservation efforts. Mbala District, located in the Northern Province of
Zambia, is one such area with a rich cultural and historical heritage.

The Moto-Moto Museum in Mbala, a district in the Northern Province of Zambia, is an ideal
location for a conservation tourism project. The museum is home to a vast collection of
historical and cultural artifacts, including the Moto-Moto. However, the museum faces
challenges in terms of infrastructure development, marketing, and community engagement.
This study aims to investigate the historical conservation tourism potential and development of
the Moto-Moto Museum in Mbala District.

Literature Review:

Conservation tourism has been practiced in various parts of the world, including Africa, Asia,
and Europe. In Africa, conservation tourism has been successful in countries such as South
Africa, Kenya, and Botswana (Harrison et al., 2015). In Zambia, conservation tourism has been
practiced in national parks and game reserves, such as South Luangwa National Park and Kafue
National Park (Mwanga et al., 2017).

Several studies have investigated the potential of tourism development in other districts with
similar characteristics to Mbala District. For example, a study by Chintu et al. (2018) found that
tourism development in Livingstonia Mission in Northern Zambia has potential for economic
growth and poverty reduction. Similarly, a study by Mulenga et al. (2019) found that cultural
tourism has potential for economic growth and social development in rural areas of Zambia.

In Mbala District specifically, tourism development has potential for economic growth and
poverty reduction in the district.

Additionally, in Mbala District, there have been attempts to develop conservation tourism
initiatives, such as the Mafuta Cultural Village and the Kasaba Bay Conservation Project
(Mwanga et al., 2017). However, these initiatives have faced challenges due to limited
resources and infrastructure.

These Studies have shown that community involvement and participation are crucial in
conservation tourism development. In the case of the Moto-Moto Museum, community
engagement and participation are limited, hindering the museum's potential for growth.

Research Method:

This study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining both qualitative and quantitative
data collection and analysis methods. The research design was a descriptive survey, with a
sample size of 200 respondents, including local community members, tourists, and museum
staff. Data was collected through questionnaires, interviews, and observations. Data analysis
involved descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, and content analysis.

These methods include the following;

1. Recording: Observations were made at the museum to record tourist activities and artifacts.

2. Questionnaire: A survey was conducted among visitors to determine their opinions on tourist
activities and museum services.

3. Observation: Observations were made at the museum to record tourist activities and
artifacts.

4. Note Taking: Notes were taken during interviews with museum officials and visitors.

5. Interview: Interviews were conducted with museum officials and visitors to gather
information on tourist activities, museum services, and future plans.

Presentation of Findings:

The study found that the Moto-Moto Museum has significant potential for conservation
tourism development. The museum has a unique collection of historical and cultural artifacts,
including the Moto-Moto species, which attracts tourists from within Zambia and abroad.

The study also identified potential conservation tourism products and services that can be
developed at the museum, including guided tours, workshops, and exhibitions.

The findings of this study indicate that the Moto-Moto Museum has immense tourism
potential, but faces significant challenges in terms of infrastructure development, marketing,
and community engagement. The study proposes solutions to these challenges, including the
development of tourism facilities and amenities, bad roads, marketing and promotion
strategies, and community engagement and participation initiatives. The findings suggest that
