The Human System-Man as a Communicator

by John M. Lannon

In considering man as a communicator, we use the four component model of communication process to describe man’s
communicative acts. This system consists essentially of man as the processor and his storage system, essentially the
human brain, besides the transmitter subsystem and the receiver subsystem.

Man did not become truly human until he developed spoken language. Speech acts to separate man from man, and
mankind from the cosmic universe. Language has always been held to man’s richest art form and distinguishes him from
the animal creations. It helps appreciate the nature of the spoken word and to contrast it with the written word. Language
does for the intelligence what the wheel does for the body.

In structured communication, we are usually concerned with our sight and sound receptors. Our other senses generally
play only a supportive role in the communication process when we use languages. The ability to listen well and appreciate
nuances of the message being received also reflects a higher level of comprehension. Or of empathy, associated with a
good leader or an executive of high calibre.

As we carefully note the distinctive features that elevate humans from animal communication, we should also keep pace
with higher technological developments as we continue to learn the structural and semantic differences between human or
natural and computer language. The elimination of human beings from the domain of technical writing is very unlikely,
since the possibility that humans and machines will interact extensively.
