rd

Subject:- PS-1
Time Allowed: - 1H 30M Max. Marks: - 20

Note: Schematic diagram must be shown wherever necessary. Any Data you feel
missing suitably be assumed & stated clearly. Units of quantities used / calculated
must be stated clearly
PART-A
NOTE: - Attempt any two, each question carries four marks
1. Explore and explain the mechanisms behind the generation of over-
voltages, with a focus on lightning-induced and switching surges.
Provide real-world examples to illustrate each type of over-voltage.
CO-1
2. Define and discuss insulation coordination in the context of electrical
systems. Explain how insulation coordination helps in managing over-
voltages. Include considerations for selecting appropriate insulation
levels and coordination techniques. CO-1
3. Analyze the voltages generated by traveling surges in power systems.
Discuss the factors influencing the magnitude and duration of these
voltages. Provide insights into the potential impact on connected
equipment. CO-3
4. Explore the concept of Bewley diagrams in the context of over-voltages
and insulation coordination. Explain how Bewley diagrams are used to
visualize and analyze insulation strength under different over-voltage
conditions CO-2
PART-B
NOTE: - Attempt any three, each question carries four marks

5. What is the method of symmetrical components, and how does it

differentiate between positive, negative, and zero sequences in fault
analysis? Discuss the representation of generators, lines, and
transformers in sequence networks. CO-2
6. Provide an overview of different types of circuit breakers in switchgear.
What attributes are essential for protection schemes, and how do back-
up protection systems work? CO-1
7. Compare and contrast Line-Commutated Converters (LCC) and Voltage
Source Converters (VSC) in DC transmission systems. Explain the real
power flow control in a DC link. Discuss the fundamental differences
between AC and DC transmission systems.
CO-1
8. Explain the I-V (current-voltage) and P-V (power-voltage) characteristics
of photovoltaic (PV) panels. Describe the power electronic interface of
PV systems with the grid.CO-1
9. Analyze the power curve of a wind turbine. Differentiate between fixed
and variable speed wind turbines. Discuss the characteristics of
Permanent Magnetic Synchronous Generators and Induction Generators
in the context of wind energy systems. Explain the power electronics
interfaces of wind generators with the grid. CO-3
