ACTIVITY #6
A. Use INDUCTIVE REASONING to decide whether each statement is correct.
Note: The numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5,…. Are called counting numbers or natural numbers. Any
counting number n divided by 2 produces a remainder of 0 or 1. If n divided by 2 has a
remainder of 0, then n is an even counting number. If n divided by 2 has a remainder of 1, then
n is an odd counting number.
1. The sum of any two even counting numbers is always an even counting number.
2. The product of an odd counting number and an even counting number is always an even
counting number
3. The product of two odd counting numbers is always an odd counting number.
4. The sum of two odd counting numbers is always an odd counting number.
5. Pick any counting number. Multiply the number by 6. Add 8 to the product. Divide the
sum by 2. Subtract 4 from the quotient. The resulting number is twice the original
number.
6. Pick any counting number. Multiply the number by 8. Subtract 4 from the product.
Divide the difference by 2. Add 2 to the quotient. The resulting number is four times the
original number.
7. Use inductive reasoning to write a formula for the sum of the first n positive even
integers.
B. Find a number that provides a counterexample to show that the given statement is FALSE.
For all numbers:
1
1. x >
x
2. x + x> x
3. x 3 ≥ x
4. |x +3|=|x|+3
5. −x < x
( x +1)(x−1)
6. =x +1
(x −1)
C. MAGIC SQUARES. A magic square of order n is an arrangement of numbers in a square
such that the sum of the n numbers in each row, column and diagonal is the same number.
The magic square below has order 3, and the sum of the numbers in each row, column and
diagonal is 15.
4 9 2
3 5 7
8 1 6
2 13
10 11
6 12
4 15 1
2. A magic square of order 5
