Question One [35 Marks]

(a) Let U be the set of all students, A be the set of all students at Chancellor College, B be the
set of all first year students, C be the set of all students pursuing a Science Degree and D be
the set of all female students. Using set builder notation, write the set of all first year male
students at Chancellor College who are not pursuing a Science Degree. [3 marks]

(b) Given sets A = {1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36}, B = {a, b, c, d, e, f }, C = {1, 16, 36, f } and D = {A, B},
state whether each of the following statements is true or false. Justify your answer.

i. A and B are equivalent. [2 marks]

ii. A ∪ B has 12 subsets. [2 marks]

iii. |C − A| = |D|. [2 marks]

iv. C ⊂ A. [2 marks]

(c) The following table shows the number of people in different age groups and their corresponding
political parties.

Age Range Party A Party B Party C TOTALS

18-24(X) 50 25 25 100
25-35(Y ) 25 25 15 65
Over 35(Z) 12 52 18 82
TOTALS 87 102 58 247

If A denotes the set of all people who prefer party A, B for those who prefer party B, C for
those who prefer party C, X for all those who are in the age range 18-24, Y for those in 25-35
and Z for those over 35. Use the information given to find the number of people in each of the
