Definition of Computer Graphics

Most Simply: Computer Graphics are pictures that are generated by a computer
Also refers: Computer Graphics is a tool used to create natural looking picture.
Finally: Computer Graphics often means the whole field of study that involves
these tools and pictures they produce.

Representative use of computer graphics

Art, Entertainment and publishing: As the cost of graphics systems has
decreased and powerful S/W tools are developed, many designers now use
computers to create special effects, animation and high quality publications.

Movie production, Animation & Special effects: Computer animation and

animated commercials are seen regularly on T.V. They are created by sequence
of images, where each image being only slightly different from the one before.
When they are played at 20 – 30 frames/sec, the human eye blends the images
and sees smooth motion.

Computer / mobile Games: While playing a game, player moves joysticks,

computer generated image has to respond instantly. Special H/W is often used to
speed up the generation of successive images. Action games provide some of the
greatest challenges to graphics programmers as the action must be realistic and
very fast.

Browsing on the World Wide Web: In today’s networked world, while surfing,
the user moves the mouse to a spot on the screen and click to get the desire
information. The browser must rapidly interpret the data / link on the page and
display it on the screen as high quality text & graphics.

Computer Graphics & Image processing: It is very hard to know where the
boundary between Computer Graphics & I.P. lies.
Computer Graphics creates pictures and images, while Image Processing alters
or improves these images to make them more noticeable or understandable.

Monitoring a process: Highly complex systems like factories, power plant and
air traffic control systems must be carefully monitored, often there must be a
“human in the loop” to watch out for impending trouble. The operator must be

given information, on a status display, and the data are transmitted to the
monitoring station, to be converted to graphical information and presented to the
operator.

Simulators: A variety of systems can be simulated on graphics screen. A classic

example is a flight simulator.
The system is an airplane with a certain shape and flying characteristics, along
with landing field, mountains, other planes and of -course “air”.
During a simulated flight, as the pilot moves the control, the program calculates
new positions and speed for the simulated plane. The pilot sees a simulated view
outside the cockpit. It is most demanding and difficult graphics applications to
write, as they must be responded rapidly.

Computer aided Design: Many disciplines use interactive Computer Graphics.

It can help architects to design buildings. The model might be a floor plan of a
house. He can make adjustments to the floor plan, move a wall adjust a window
and see how the house would appear when it is finally built.

Electrical Circuit Design: Computer graphics can help in the design of an

electronic Circuit. The engineer can add Circuit elements by selecting from a
menu of icons and dragging the icon to desired position in the Circuit. He can
also delete, move or connect gates, and also test how a real version of Circuit
would perform and accordingly make adjustment to the Circuit and test it again.

Scientific analysis and visualization: Graphics provide a superb tool for

presenting scientific information in a way that can be easily grasped. When data
are displayed in the right way, we often have new insight into the underlying
process we are investigating.
