October 2024

Greetings of peace.

We are grateful for Cardinal Sean O’Malley’s 21 years of service as Archbishop of Boston. We are also grateful
for his longstanding support of our work here on Arch Street. We warmly welcome Providence Bishop
Richard Henning as Archbishop-elect of Boston, and look forward to his installation at Holy Cross Cathedral on
October 31.

At the beginning of next month, we have two important days in the Catholic Church. The first is All Saints Day
on November 1. This is a particularly joyous day when we celebrate and remember those people whose
courageous sacrifices and good works have inspired Catholics over centuries. It is also a good day to be grateful
for the “lower-case” everyday inspirational saints (family members, co-workers, neighbors, and friends).

All Saints Day is a Holy Day of Obligation. We will have a 5:15pm Vigil Mass on Thursday, October 31, and
the regular Friday Mass schedule on November 1. Masses are at 6am, 7am, and 12:05pm.

The next important day in the Church is November 2: All Souls Day. This commemorates the deceased in our
lives. It is a day to remember and mourn those who have gone before us. Here on Arch Street, we especially
pray for families who are having a difficult time after the death of a loved one.

I serve on the Board of Directors of St. Francis House on Boylston Street here in Boston. The Shrine and St.
Francis House work very closely together, often collaborating to help those unhoused people in particularly
difficult, often urgent circumstances. St. Francis House is having its annual fundraiser on Saturday, November
9, at the Mandarin Oriental in Boston at 6pm. Please go to stfrancishouse.org for information about
sponsorships and tickets to the event.

I also serve on the Board of Trustees of Mount Irenaeus, a retreat house in western New York State. It occupies
400 scenic acres on the side of mountain, and welcomes all people in their journey of faith exploration. This
popular retreat ministry is particularly helpful for people who feel somewhat alienated from institutional
religion. For more information, I am happy to talk to you about it, or you may visit mountainonline.org.

May you have a prayerful season of autumn.

Monthly Zoom Meeting
I would like to begin a support group for families who have
had someone in their family die by suicide. This would
not be therapy or group therapy, but rather a safe place
where people can come together to comfortably tell the
story of their family’s experience, wherever they happen
to be on that journey.

Br. Richard McFeely, OFM, has graciously agreed to join

me in this ministry. Our role will be to accompany families
in a non-judgmental manner. We expect that almost all of
the talking will be done by members of the group, rather
