Mum and Dad had an argument last month. They were arguing about money issues.
Mum is a housewife and Dad just lost his job, therefore, our family is facing financial pressure.
Now both of them are looking at job ads anyway. Sadly, the economy isn’t very good, so there aren’t a lot
of job openings . To cope with the situation, we also have to cut our expenses. Therefore I have to stop
taking piano lessons. I want to earn some money, so I tried to find a part-time job . However, both
Mum and Dad objected. They said I should focus on my studies. As a result I gave up this thought .I
don’t want them to have one more thing to worry about.
Mum has become very careful about spending now. So we don’t spend a lot on meals . We usually
don’t eat seafood because it’s expense. We also cut down on entertainment and other unnecessary expenses,
so life can be boring sometimes . I hope my parents can get new jobs soon.

Unit 2 Consolidation
You: Daddy, how did you communicate with your family and friends when you were young?
Dad: The ways of communication in my younger days were very different from what you have now (as/so)
technology wasn’t advanced back then.
You: So you mainly wrote text messages and made phone calls?
Dad: Yes, but mobile phones in the past were quite primitive, (because/so) I couldn’t send text messages
with high-resolution images to my family and friends. Also, the mobile phone I used wasn’t smart at all.
I could access the Internet using my phone, but the download speed was really slow. I remember I
(fell/was falling) asleep when I (downloaded/was downloading) an image file (because/therefore) it
took me half an hour to download it!
You: Oh no … I can’t imagine that. Any more to share?
Dad: I wish I could have had a smartphone when I was young, then I would have been able to download and
access information anytime and anywhere. I still remember one time when I (walked/was walking) to
meet my friend at a café, my friend (called/was calling) and told me to go to another café. I didn’t know
the directions, but my phone didn’t have any built-in maps. (As a result/Since), I had to ask people for
directions and it took me a long time to reach the café.
You: I can’t imagine living without smartphones (since/therefore) the apps make my life a lot easier! I also
read or watch most of the news on my phone.
Dad: We could only rely on newspapers, television and radio, especially for breaking news in the form of
videos. I still remember the day when the September 11 attacks happened in 2001.
You: What (was you doing/were you doing) at that time?
Dad: You mum and I were in Taiwan. (When/While) we (looked/were looking) for a place to eat in the
evening, people (watched/were watching) news on big TV screens on the street and were profoundly
shocked at what they saw. If a similar incident happens now, you’ll learn about it instantly (because/so)
such news will certainly appear on your social media feeds.
You: Yes, that’s true. I remember that the news about NBA legend Kobe Bryant’s death (popped/was
popping) up when I (used/was using) my phone.
Dad: Right. Technology will continue to advance, and you can share your present experience with your
children in the future. It’ll be fun.
