Types of SAP Projects

In SAP, there are various types of projects based on their nature and objectives.
Here are Six different types of SAP projects:

1. Greenfield Implementation Project

2. Support Project
3. Rollout Project
4. Conversion Project
5. Upgradation Project
6. Development Project

1. Greenfield Implementation Project:

A Greenfield Implementation project in SAP (also called as End-to-End
Implementation Project) refers to the process of implementing SAP software
in an organization where there is no existing SAP system in place.

• It involves starting with a clean slate and building the SAP system from
scratch, they also require careful planning, coordination, and execution to
ensure a successful implementation.
• Customer wants to migrate data from Legacy system to SAP system.
• To streamline the SAP implementation and deployment of SAP solutions we
use ASAP or Activate methodology which is

• The duration of an SAP implementation project can vary significantly based

on several factors; 6 to 24 months (about 2 years) is quite common.
• Organizations may run both the old and new systems in parallel for a certain
period to validate the accuracy of data and ensure a smooth transition.
• Since users are likely to be unfamiliar with the new SAP system,
comprehensive training programs and change management initiatives are
essential to help employees adapt to the new processes and tools.

2. Support Project (AMS-Application, Maintenance & Support):

After successful implementation of SAP for the client, next is to provide the
support and maintenance to the client for their day-to-day business
transactions. The important roles and responsibilities in the Support project
are:

• To resolve issues.
• To provide assistances to the users during the month and year-end activities
• There can be two types of supporting projects i.e.
• L1 - is typically the first point of contact for end-users and focuses on quick
resolutions for common issues.
• L2 - When the L1 team is not able to resolve the issue then L1 team escalates
the issue to L2 team handles more complex problems that require a deeper
understanding of the SAP system.
• L3 - When the L2 team is not able to resolve the issue then L2 team escalates
the issue to L3 team involves highly technical and specialized expertise, often
collaborating with development teams to address advanced issues. Only the
L3 team is authorized to make any changes to the existing SAP system.

3. Rollout Project (Expansion Project):

A Rollout Project in SAP refers to the process of extending an existing SAP
implementation to additional locations, business units, or regions within an
organization.
• Rollout projects typically follow a project lifecycle similar to the initial SAP
implementation, including phases such as planning, analysis, design,
configuration, testing, training, and deployment.
• Depending on the rollout strategy, data from existing systems in the new
locations may need to be migrated to the SAP system.
• Integration with existing systems, both within the organization and at the new
locations, is a crucial aspect of rollout projects.
• Rollout projects are common in large organizations with a global or multi-
location presence.
• While maintaining standardization, rollouts may also involve some level of
localization to accommodate specific regional or business unit requirements.

4. Conversion Project:
A conversion or upgrade project in the context of SAP refers to the process of
migrating from an older version of SAP software to a newer version. This may
involve moving from SAP ECC (ERP Central Component) to SAP S/4HANA,
which is the next-generation ERP suite.

• Upgrading SAP often brings new and enhanced functionalities that include
improved features, better performance, and support for evolving business
processes.
• Rigorous testing is essential to validate that the upgraded SAP system
functions correctly and meets business requirements.
• Users and IT staff may need training on the new features and functionalities
introduced in the upgraded SAP system.
• After the upgrade, ongoing support and monitoring are necessary to address
any issues that may arise and to ensure the continued smooth operation of
the SAP system.

5. Upgradation Project:
An upgradation project in SAP refers to the process of upgrading an existing
SAP system to a newer version or release like from S/4 HANA 1809 to S/4
HANA 1909. SAP regularly releases new versions of its software to introduce
new features, functionalities, and improvements in performance and security.

• Plan and execute data migration strategies, ensuring that data integrity is
maintained during the upgrade.
• Review and adapt custom code, reports, and enhancements to ensure
compatibility with the new SAP version.
• Develop a comprehensive testing plan that covers unit testing, integration
testing, and user acceptance testing.
• Provide training for system administrators, developers, and end-users on the
new features and changes introduced in the upgraded SAP version.
