Atithi

by Rabindranath Tagore
“Atithi “- The Guest by Rabindranath Tagore is an astonishing
narrative of the eternal journey of a human soul resting for a
while and taking a stride to the next opportunity, which
characterizes the polarity of life and death.
Tarapada, the protagonist of the story, was wanderlust and
unwary of ties, which is reflected throughout the story.

Tarapada had run away from home of his own volition at the
age of seven or eight, despite being the darling of his family,
which reflects that the love he received made no difference
to him and his disregard for conventional ties present during
the time. He was inconsiderate of the love he received from
his family and joined a jatra troupe and returned home
months only when he felt to do so. This behaviour of his
highlights the theme of freedom and choice in the story.

His reaction to nature and music further highlights his free-

spirited nature. Tarapada is deeply moved by nature, which
resonates with his soul and fuels his wanderlust. He was
lured by the jatra troupe that he came across during his
journey. He would be a part of the troupes for a very brief
period of time and leave before he could form an attachment
with the members of the troupe.

Tarapada eventually gets infatuated with Charusashi. Their

relationship was marked by affection and mutual
understanding. Even the prospect of a settled life with
Charusashi could not bound him. On the eve of their
marriage, he feels an irresistible pull to return to his
wandering life, demonstrating his love for freedom and
indifference for love and ties.

Tarapada Atithi's character in Rabindranath Tagore’s story is a

compelling exploration of wanderlust and detachment from
conventional ties. His restless spirit and desire for exploration
contrast with societal norms, creating a nuanced portrayal of
the challenges and freedoms associated with breaking away
from traditional expectations. Through Tarapada, Tagore
delves into themes of personal freedom, the search for
meaning, and the interplay between individual aspirations
and social responsibilities.
