- If there is a knot depending on size the aircraft wood can or cannot be airworthy

- Dimensional changes due to the moisture content of the wood being lowered are the
greatest in the tangential direction

- Plain Sawed : produces the most board feet from a log

- Quarter Sawed : produces the most board feet of aircraft quality wood from a log THIS
IS AVIATION GRADE
LOOK AT IMAGE BELOW TO UNDERSTAND WITH VISUAL

-
- SOLID: The routed I-beam wooden spar is routed to reduce the weight of the member

- PLYWOOD: plywood is an assembled product of wood and glue that is usually made of
an odd number of thin plies or veneers with the grain of each layer placed at 90 degrees
or 45 degrees to the adjacent ply plies

- NO FORM OF DECAY OR ROT IS ACCEPTABLE IN THE AIRCRAFT STRUCTURE

- PIN KNOTS CLUSTER : small knots closely located to each other, are permitted in
wood aircraft structures provided they have minimal effect on grain deviation

- COMPRESSION FAILURES : compression failures are characterized by a buckling of

the fibers that appear as streaks on the surface. (Right angles to the grain)

- DECAY/ROT : No form of decay or rot is acceptable in a wood structure

- Wood Structure Inspection Tools

- Flashlight
- Magnifying glass
- Inspection mirror
- Bore Scope
- Feeler Gauge
- Small Plastic Hammer
- Metal Probe
- Moisture Meter
- KNOWLEDGE

- Preparation For Wood Gluing : Satisfactory glue joints in aircraft should develop the
full strength of the wood under all conditions of stress

- Acceptable substitutions of wood species: AC43.13-1B contains information

regarding substitution of wood species

- Acceptable substitutions of wood species cont. : Spruce is regarded as the standard

wood for the which all other wood is compared to

- Wing spar repairs: Laminated wood spars may be substituted for solid rectangular
wood spars when the same strength wood is used
- The recommended dimensions of a spar splice consist of a scarf joint is 15 X
WIDTH
- Bolt and Bushing Holes: In the case of elongated bolt holes in a spar or cracks in close
proximity to the bolt holes, the repair may require a new section to be spliced in the spar,
or replacement of the entire spar

- Plywood skin repairs surface patch : located aft of the 10 percent chord line, or which
wrap around the leading edge and terminate aft of the 10 percent chord line, are
permissible

- Scarf Patch : A properly prepared and installed scarf patch is the best repair for
damaged plywood and is preferred for most skin repairs

MOST IF NOT ALL REPAIRS WILL BE COVERED IN THE AC43.13-1B IN THE WOOD
SECTION IN CHAPTER 1!!!
