Critical analysis essay of popular culture in the Philippine society

Based on the video I've watched, popular culture has two aspects , first its
something inferior but because of its availability, it becomes popular like
plastic bags . Second is something or someone intentionally seeking
attention like milktea due to consumer widespread embrace. The discussant
also tackle the 2 kinds of culture pertaining to the highly valued
representation of people's culture like banaue rice terraces and the culture
that are traditions , artifacts and perceptions created by a people who
generally share a geographic region of the world like Manunggul Jar ,
Dinagyang Festival and Sinulog Festival are only few of it's examples.

The video also shows and discuss the 3 levels of culture consisting of
high ,low and middle culture.High culture is associated with upper class
such as aristocrats and intelligentia. The forms of arts and knowledge that
are widely known globally is part of the high culture . Fox hunting is also part
of it but not universally known since i guess aristocrats only do it for fun
during an important event based on historical novels I've read.

Low culture on the other hand are forms of entertainment or pleasure that
appeal to the masses. The example of this is the reality tv shows or social
media trends that the teenagers use in the present .Middle culture or also
known as hybrid culture is a mixture of both high and low culture . It consist
of people that enjoys the mixture of watching opera but also enjoy watching
tv dramas.

The next topic was the 4 elements of culture . The first is the values
shape the society's view of what is important in life . An example of this is
the filipino practice of " pagmamano" and the use of " po and opo" to respect
the elders.Norms, meanwhile are the expected behavior in different
situations such as filipinos being hospitable to the strangers and also being
responsible in every situations.Next is the institutions, like family , church ,
schools and government that becomes a way to pass the values to the
other generations.Lastly is the artifacts that the government manage to
maintain so that the next generation can see and use it such as the jeepney
and barong tagalog.

The last topic is about the perception of Bienvenido Lumbera to the

popular culture. According to Lumbera , popular culture is different from folk
and nationalist culture of the filipinos. Let's discuss first the folk culture , it is
the way of living of a community during a speific time and portrays the
practices of people and also shows how they survive with nature. An
example of this are the folk stories , legends , myths, customs and beliefs
passed down orally ,mostly found in rural areas. While the nationalist culture
was created through colonial resistance reflecting the patriotic and
revolutionary sentiments of filipinos .

Lumbera differentiate the folk and nationalist culture to the popular

culture since popular culture is a product of foreign influences such as the
influence of Spanish and Americans. But despite this influences , there's still
a group of Filipinos that left untouched and retained their customs and
traditions , they are called the Indigenous Culture. The example of this are
the Aetas that can be distinguished by their dark skin, curly hair and usually
below five feet . Aetas are hunting and with the most survival skills in
jungle .

Lumbera says , "popular culture is power and whoever weilds it to

manipulate minds is likely to finds its literary and technological machinery
turned against him when the mind it has manipulated discover its potency as
political weapon." For me this quote means that popular culture is powerful
enough to have a strong influence .

In conclusion , culture and popular culture in the Philippines has a great

history and continue to change in every years. It is shaped by people, time
and place . So popular culture is continues despite of what year or age it is.I
also notice that the discussant is a great talker with a good speed of the way
he speaks that the listeners can easily follows.
