DIGA110 Week 1
Media
Semester 1: 2024
Course Description:
This module begins by offering students a basic introduction to Digital Arts theory. It
traces the important historical and contemporary relationship between art and
technology – looking at precedents from cave art to the digital revolution. The aim of
this module is to engender an understanding of basic principles and ideas of art practice
and theory, the ever-present affinity between art and technology and the impact of the
digital revolution on art practice and theory. This module includes a practice-based
component whereby students respond creatively to aspects of the theoretical content
using accessible digital platforms and processes.

Weekly Schedule
1. The teaching process for this module will consist of (1) weekly class slides (PDF),
accompanied by viewings, podcasts and readings. These will be uploaded on
Learn2024 by Monday morning of each week.
2. It is recommended that you download the class slides on the Monday and go
through them during your study time.
3. We will have our weekly online class meeting via ZOOM on the Monday of each
week from 09:00 until 10:30. During these sessions (1) I will summarize the main points
of the week's lecture; and (2) open up the session for more questions, comments. An
audio recording of the each week’s ZOOM meetings will be made available on
Learn2024.
1. Use your name and surname for your Zoom profile name. This helps with
addressing students individually.
2. Students are welcome to have their camera either on or off. Keeping it off will save
data if this is a concern.
3. Keep your microphone on mute when others are talking as multiple environmental
sounds make it difficult to hear the speaker talk. When you have questions, you are
able to un-mute your microphone.
4. If you would like to ask a question or make a comment during a meeting, use the
"raise hand" icon on the bottom right hand side corner of your screen.
5. There have been times when our internet signals have been low and even dropped
completely - if this happens please be patient and wait for the lecturer or other
students to reconnect online. If there is a more severe technical glitch, take a look on
the class' WhatsApp group for further information.
Approach
History as Purposive:
Art history theory can provide us with both knowledge of art practice over the
centuries and at the same time also provide us with tools to consider when working
with art today through both practice and theory.
