About SSS1 Scheme of Work
The Senior Secondary School 1 (SSS1) scheme of work is a crucial phase in the Nige-
rian education system, designed to bridge the gap between Junior Secondary School
(JSS) and the more demanding and specialized Senior Secondary School curriculum.

This scheme is carefully organized to provide students with a thorough and well-
rounded education, enhancing their knowledge base while developing their critical
thinking and problem-solving skills. This preparation is essential for higher educa-
tion and the diverse career paths the students would choose to tread later in their
lives.

The primary goals of the SSS1 scheme of work include:

 Providing students with the knowledge and skills needed for academic achieve-
ment and personal growth.
 Deepening their understanding of core subjects to prepare them for more spe-
cialized studies in SSS2 and SSS3.
 Enhancing their critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and ability to learn in-
dependently.
 Promoting ethical behavior, civic responsibility, and a dedication to lifelong
learning.
 Preparing students for external exams such as the West African Senior School
Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examination Council (NECO)
exams.

To boost student engagement and learning outcomes, the SSS1 scheme of work uti-
lizes various teaching methods, such as:

 Encouraging active participation through discussions, group work, and presenta-

tions.
 Including laboratory experiments, field trips, and hands-on activities to support
theoretical learning.
 Using digital tools and resources to facilitate learning and provide access to in-
formation.
 Involving students in projects that demand critical thinking, creativity, and col-
laboration.
Introduction

n junior secondary school, Basic Science gives students a broad un-

derstanding of the natural world, including the basics of physics, chem-
istry, and biology. When students move to Senior Secondary School 1 (SSS1),
the focus shifts to Chemistry, which becomes more detailed and specialized.

In SS1 Chemistry, students dive deeper into topics like atomic structure, the
periodic table, chemical bonding, and stoichiometry, and this is achieved
using the carefully designed Lagos state unified scheme of work for
SSS1. While Basic Science involves simple experiments, SS1 Chemistry fo-
cuses on more complex experiments, where students learn advanced lab
skills such as precise measurement and detailed observation.

By the end of SS1, students will have a strong foundation in Chemistry,

preparing them for more advanced topics in the future.

Achievement standards
SSS1 First Term
At the end of the SSS1 first term, students can;
● Apply chemistry to daily life;
● Outline steps to scientific investigation;
● Distinguish between physical and chemical changes;
● Know if changes are permanent or temporary through heating
iodine and ammonium chloride crystals;
● Identify elements used around the home for di erent purposes;
● Separate mixtures using di erent techniques.

SSS1 Second Term

At the end of the SSS1 second term, students can;
● Explain chemical laws;
● Relate the concept of laws/rules in daily life;
By the end of SS1, students will have a strong foundation in Chemistry,
preparing them for more advanced topics in the future.
