SHIPBOARD TRAINING AND DRILLS RECORD

Ship’s Name: ORIENTAL IXIA Date: 07 SEPT 2024


Position: AT SEA Initiating Time: 1030H-1100H
Type of shipboard exercise/training: EMERGENCY STEERING DRILL
Scenario of the Exercise
Simulated Scenario: While vessel was at sea, OOW noticed off Heading alarm in autopilot and rudder not responding,
changed over to hand steering and NFU mode, still found rudder is not responding as per the given helm. Found steering
gear failure occurred.
Event of time log (1030-1100 LT) (UTC+2)
The details of the event during the drill should be recorded with local time
“EMERGENCY STEERING DRILL”

1030H: OOW raised the alarm and followed by the announcement “EMERGENCY STEERING DRILL” on ship’s public
address repeatedly.
1031H: OOW informed Master and Engine Room about the situation and displayed the corresponding signals.
1032H: OOW broadcasted safety message on VHF CH16 & then on CH13 to inform all ships in the vicinity area.
1032H: All crewmembers, except for duty Engineer & duty Engineer, mustered at the muster station.
1033H: C/O report that head count taken. Master acknowledged and ordered to proceed with the Drill.
1037H: C/O explained to the crew the procedures to be followed on failure of steering.
1039H: OOW continued plotting the ship position to monitor the effect of current.
1040H: Master ordered to change to manual steering NFU mode System 1 & 2 good working.
1041H: Master acknowledges and switch off steering from the bridge. Informed steering flat to start using Emergency
steering.
1042H: C/O acknowledged and orderd to start using the solenoid valve to Port & Stbd from Steering flat.
1046H: Crew were given a chance to operate Emergency Steering individually by the use of solenoid and headings
compared with bridge – 195 (G)
1055H: C/O reported that all crew completed testing and used solenoid valve to alter from port to Stbd. Some instructions
to crew were given for the quick response in case emergency Steering failure occurred.
1057H: C/E reported that normal steering ready to use. Master acknowledged and resumed normal steering.
1059H: C/O reported steering gear room is cleared. Normal ship signals displayed.
1100H: Master acknowledged, post drill short debriefing done and drill called off.

Evaluation for Shipboard Drill and Training


Master should made out the following column with regard to wholly drill condition in accordance with
S-0801 Emergency Response & Salvage Procedure Section 7

Emergency steering gear carried out satisfactory, crewmembers are aware in the use with procedures during
such event, Drill performed satisfactorily. On duty crew were briefed after watch.
* Training and drills should not be conducted on Saturday, Sunday and holiday.
