Tutorial 1: The real numbers

26th January, Friday
Instructions to students: Please attempt these questions before your tutorial session,
so that you can have a meaningful session with your tutor.
1. Compute, without proofs, the suprema and infima (if exist) of the following sets,
and determine if the suprema and infima (if exist) are, respectively, maxima and
minima of the respective sets.
nm o
(a) A = : m, n ∈ N with m ≤ n . n
(c) C = :n∈N .
n m  3n + 1
(−1)
(b) B = : m, n ∈ N . m
n (d) D = : m, n ∈ N .
m+n

2. Prove that if the sets A, B ⊆ R are nonempty and bounded above, then
max {sup A, sup B} = sup (A ∪ B).

3. Suppose that the set A ⊆ R is nonempty and bounded below, and define the set
B := {b ∈ R : b is a lower bound for A} .
Prove that sup B = inf A.

4. Suppose that the sets A, B ⊆ R are nonempty and bounded above and that s =
sup A and t = sup B. Define the notation
A + B := {a + b : a ∈ A and b ∈ B} .
(a) Prove that s + t is an upper bound for A + B.
(b) Prove that if u ∈ R is an upper bound for A + B and a ∈ A, then
t ≤ u − a.
(c) Hence deduce that sup (A + B) = s + t.

5. Prove that if A ⊆ R is nonempty and bounded above, and s ∈ R has the property
that
1
∀n ∈ N s + is an upper bound for A and
n
1
s − is not an upper bound for A,
n
then s = sup A.

Additional Questions (if time permits)

1. Suppose that A1 , A2 , A3 , . . . is a list of nonempty sets, each of which is bounded
above. Find a formula for sup (∪∞ n=1 An ) in terms of sup A1 , sup A2 , sup A3 , . . . .

2. Determine if each of the following statements is true.

(a) There are two sets A, B ⊆ R with A ∩ B = ∅, sup A = sup B, sup A ∈ / A, and
sup B ∈/ B.
(b) There is a sequence of nested open intervals J1 ⊇ J2 ⊇ J3 ⊇ · · · with ∩∞ n=1 Jn
nonempty but containing only a finite number of elements.
(c) There is a sequence of closed and bounded (but not necessarily nested) in-
tervals I1 , I2 , I3 , . . . with the property that ∩N
n=1 In ̸= ∅ for all N ∈ N, but

∩n=1 In = ∅.

3. Prove that N × N is countable; i.e., elements of N × N can be listed in a sequence

indexed by the natural numbers.
