1. Workshop practice
Objective:
The objective of this course is to get a hands on knowledge of several Workshop Practices
like fitting, welding, machining etc. and learn safety regulations to be maintained in a shop
floor.
1. Workshop practice
Workshop:
• Is a place where products are manufactured or repaired.
• Is a place where technical and engineering works are carried out.
It involves operations like bench work and fitting, welding, machining, casting, woodworking,
smithy, sheet metal, etc. Here are some of the workshops you will study.
1. Fitting shop
2. Woodshop
3. Welding shop
4. Machining shop, etc.
1.1. Workshop safety
Safety:
• The condition of being protected from or unlikely to cause danger, risk, damage, harm, or injury.
• Is freedom from damage, harm, or injury. It’s also protection against damage to machines, tools, as
well as protection from factors that can lead to accidents.
Workshop safety
• Is the protection of humans from danger, risk, damage, harm, or injury and machines, tools,
and equipment’s from damage in the workshop.
• All tools are dangerous if used improperly or carelessly. Working safely is the first thing the
student should learn because the safe way is the correct way.
1.2. General Safety Precautions while Working in a Workshop
• Always listen carefully to the teacher and follow instructions. Ask
questions, if you do not understand.
• Wear personal protective equipment’s (PPE)(eye, foot, body, hand, head,
hear)
▪ Moving parts of various machines, like those of printing machines, paper-cutters and trimmers, etc.
1.1. Workshop safety
Objectives of safety
• Preventing workplace injuries, illnesses, and fatalities (ensure a healthy life in the workshop).
• It is needed to prevent accidents in the industry by reducing any hazard to a minimum.
• Preventing disability and loss of life of employees (save life of workers).
• Prevent damage/loss of machines, tools, and equipment.
• Reduce workman’s compensation, insurance rate, and all the cost of accidents.
• Reduces work stoppage and production leads to high production rate and profit.
