PARAMETERS OF RESOLUTION

The resolu on of remote sensing data refers to the level of detail and accuracy of the
informa on captured by the sensors. There are several types of resolu ons in remote sensing,
including spa al resolu on, spectral resolu on, radiometric resolu on, and temporal
resolu on.
Spa al Resolu on
Spa al resolu on in remote sensing refers to the level of detail or the size of the
smallest feature that can be detected in an image. It is determined by the sensor’s pixel size,
which is the area on the ground represented by each pixel in the image. The smaller the pixel
size, the higher the spa al resolu on and the more detailed the image.
High spa al resolu on: 0.41 - 4 m
Low spa al resolu on: 30 - > 1000 m
For example, a high spa al resolu on sensor can dis nguish between different types
of land cover, such as forests, crops, and urban areas, and provide more detailed informa on
on their spa al distribu on and extent.
Spectral Resolu on
Spectral resolu on in remote sensing refers to the ability of a sensor to detect different
wavelengths or colours of light. It is determined by the number and width of the bands in an
image, which determines the range of electromagne c wavelengths that can be detected. A
high spectral resolu on sensor can dis nguish between different types of vegeta on or
minerals based on their unique spectral signatures.
High spectral resolu on: - 220 bands
Medium spectral resolu on: 3 - 15 bands
Low spectral resolu on: - 3 bands

Spectral resolu on is important for various applica ons, such as land cover
classifica on, mineral explora on, and agriculture. For example, different types of vegeta on
have unique spectral signatures, which can be used to dis nguish between different
vegeta on types and monitor changes in vegeta on cover over me.
Radiometric Resolu on
Radiometric resolu on in remote sensing refers to the ability of a sensor to detect
small differences in the intensity of radia on or light. It is determined by the number of bits
used to represent the digital values of each pixel in the image. A sensor with high radiometric
resolu on can detect small changes in reflectance or brightness, which can be important for
iden fying subtle varia ons in land cover or surface features.
The quan sa on levels are expressed as n binary bits, such as 7 bit, 8 bit, 10 bit, etc. 8
bit digi sa on implies 28 or 256 discrete levels (i.e. 0-255).
Radiometric resolu on is important for various applica ons, such as mineral
explora on, agriculture, and environmental monitoring. For example, changes in vegeta on
health or soil moisture can cause small changes in reflectance, which can be detected by
sensors with high radiometric resolu on.
Temporal Resolu on
Temporal resolu on in remote sensing refers to the frequency and regularity of data
acquisi on over a given area. It is determined by the me interval between successive
acquisi ons of images or other data. A sensor with high temporal resolu on can provide
frequent updates on changes in land cover, vegeta on health, or other features over me.
High temporal resolu on: < 24 hours - 3 days
Medium temporal resolu on: 4 - 16 days
Low temporal resolu on: > 16 days
Temporal resolu on is important for various applica ons, such as monitoring land
cover changes, tracking natural disasters, and analysing seasonal trends in vegeta on growth.
For example, frequent updates on changes in land cover can help iden fy areas of
deforesta on or urbaniza on.
