Part-I Short Answer – (closed book) Time allowed: 20min

1. List and discuss the types of flexural failure in beam. (2pts)

2. What is ductile beam and how ductility can be ensured? (2pts)

3. What are the two failure modes of beam under shear force? (2pts)

4. List at least four reasons for providing compression reinforcement. (2pts)

5. Write the primary reasons that we provide cover (concrete between the surface of the slab
or beam and the reinforcing bars). (2pts)

Part-II Workout – (Open book) Time allowed: 2:40hrs

6. Figure 1 below is a first floor plan of a reinforced concrete office building. During construction,
slabs and beams are cast monolithically. The overall thickness of the RC solid slab is required to be
150 mm. Given that a characteristic live load of 3kN/m 2, the design life = 50 years, fire resistance =
REI 60, exposure class = XC1, characteristic concrete strength = C25/30, high yield steel strength =
S-450 N/mm2 and diameter of reinforcement = 10 mm.
a) Design the reinforcement and show schematic detailing for slab panel-1. (10pts)
b) Find the load transferred from slab to the abeam axis-1. (4pts)
c) Check the deflection requirement for panel-1 and write your judgment. (5pts)

7. The beam cross-section shown in figure 2 is intended to resist the design moment 75KNm and the
design shear force 40kN. The concrete grade and reinforcing steel grade used is C30/35 and S450
respectively. Moment redistribution is not required.
a) Determine the number of flexural reinforcement if ∅ 16 bar is used. (10pts)
b) Design a shear reinforcement if ∅ 8 link bar is used. (7pts)
c) Show the beam section detailing. (4pts)
