Calibration procedures

VERNIER CALIPER
1. Scope
This document covers the Work Procedures for calibration of Vernier/ Dial/ Digital Calipers covering
upto 1000 mm.
2. Instruments/ Masters used for Calibration
 Grade “0” slips gauges having traceability to National /International standards.
 Master ring gauge having traceability to National /International standards.
 Profile Projector having traceability to National /International standards.
3. Preliminary Checking of Instrument
 Visually check for any damages on the surface of the jaws and both Vernier and main scales.
 Clean the equipment with a cleaning agent like isopropyl alcohol / acetone and wipe the functional
surfaces with soft cloth.
 Check the smoothness of movement of the slide throughout its traverse in the unclamped position.
If required, lubricate the guiding surface on the beam with light high quality oil.
 Check the function of the clamping screw of the slide and fine adjustment screw.
4. Environmental Conditions for Calibration
Stabilize the Caliper and Slip gauges in a controlled atmosphere, temperature maintained at 20° ±
1 °C for minimum period of 2 hours.
5. Accuracy Checks
Caliper is calibrated for External Measuring Jaws, Internal Measuring Jaws, Depth Measuring
Blade, Parallelity of Internal and External Measuring Jaws.
5.1 Calibration of External Measuring Jaws
 Move the sliding jaw to come in contact with the fixed jaw.
 Note the caliper reading. This indicates the error at Zero Position. In case of Digital Vernier reset
value to zero.
 Place “0" grade slip gauge between the measuring faces near to the Main scale of the Caliper and
note the reading.
 Error = Calipers Reading - Slip Gauge Size.
 Repeat the above procedure to cover the full range of the caliper using different sizes of slip
gauges.
 Repeat the above procedures at any one position of the Vernier caliper 10 times and note down
the readings for evaluating the Type A error, for calculating uncertainty of measurement.
 Record all the results as per the format.
 Note down the type B components for Uncertainty of Measurement as per the enclosed
UOM format sheet.
5.2 Calibration of Internal Measuring Jaws
 Insert the internal jaws of the calipers into the master ring gauge and note the reading.
 Error = Calipers Reading - Ring gauge value.
 Repeat the procedure to cover the full range of the caliper using a number of ring gauges.
 Repeat the above procedures at any one position of the Vernier caliper 10 times and note down
the readings for evaluating the Type A error, for calculating uncertainty of measurement.
 Record all the results as per the format.
 Note down the type B components for Uncertainty of Measurement as p er the enclosed
UOM format sheet.

5.3 Calibration of Depth Measuring Blade

 Set the zero if possible by butting the surface of the Depth Measuring Jaw of the Caliper to the
Reference surface, and note down the error if any.
 Measure depth using Slip Gauges and note down the readings.
 Error = Calipers Reading - Slip gauge size.
 Repeat the above procedures at any one slip gauge 10 times and note down the readings for
evaluating the Type A error, for calculating uncertainty of measurement.
 Record all the results as per the format.
 Note down the type B components for Uncertainty of Measurement as per the enclosed
UOM format sheet.
5.4 Parallelism Using Profile projector
 Measure the distance between the jaws at different sections using Profile projector by aligning one
edge of jaw and measure the other jaw at different places.
 Difference between maximum and minimum reading is the Parallelity of the jaws.

6. Recording of Results
Record all the results in the enclosed format.
6.a Uncertainty of measurement.
Calculate Uncertainty of measurement as per enclosed format.
7. Handling of instrument/ gauge
After calibration the Vernier caliper is lubricated with oil or white petroleum jelly to prevent corrosion,
packed in its own box / container and stored in the cupboard "After calibration".
