Avoiding Relapse Drift

Objective: To equip adolescents recovering from marijuana addiction with strategies to


recognize and avoid relapse drift.

Session Outline

Duration: 60 minutes

Materials Needed:

• Whiteboard and markers


• Printed worksheets

Introduction (10 minutes)

• Greet the adolescent and build rapport.


• Briefly discuss their progress and any challenges faced since the last session.
• Introduce the topic of relapse drift and explain its significance.

Discussion on Relapse Drift (15 minutes)

• Define relapse drift: the gradual process of returning to old habits.


• Discuss common signs of relapse drift:
o Increased cravings
o Associating with old friends who use marijuana
o Romanticizing past use
o Avoiding recovery activities
• Encourage the adolescent to share any signs they have noticed in themselves.

Strategies to Avoid Relapse Drift (20 minutes)

• Awareness: Teach the adolescent to recognize early signs of relapse drift.


o Self-monitoring techniques (journaling, mood tracking)
• Support System: Emphasize the importance of staying connected with supportive
people.
o Attending support group meetings
o Keeping in touch with a sponsor or mentor
• Healthy Habits: Encourage the development of new, healthy habits to replace old

stress.
