SMA1101: CALCULUS

ASSIGNMENT 1 [60 marks]: Due 27/09/2024 before 11.59 am.

Answer all the questions in this paper clearly showing all the working

1. Determine the range of values of x that satisfy the following inequalities:

(a) |2x + 1| ≤ 5 (b) x − < 2. [2,4]
x
2. (a) For any real number x, define [x] to denote the greatest integer not exceeding x. The functions
f (x) and g(x) are defined for all real numbers as follows:

f (x) = [x] and g(x) = x − [x]

Find the range of f (x) and the range of g(x). [3]

lim √ .
t→1 t−1

(c) State the 7 deadly sins of calculus and find lim 1+ giving the answer in exact form. [5]
t→∞ t
3. A function, φ(x) is defined by φ(x) = ex (2 − ex ) + 1 for x ≥ 0, find, φ−1 (x). [5]
4. Given that, 

f (x) = x

Prove using − δ definition that f (x) is continuous at x = 0. [5]

5. Find the gradient function for a curve whose equation is defined by y = (cos x)etan x + sec x. [4]
6. Using the Mean-Value Theorem, deduce that,
