COMPOSITION
ON FUNCTIONS
Composition of a function is an
operation where two functions say
f and g generate a new function
say h in such a way that h(x) =
g(f(x)). This means that the variable in
function g will be replaced by the
function f
Examples
If 2
f(x)=x -3x and g(x)=2x+1,
find a. (g ∘ f) ; b.(𝑓 ∘ 𝑔)
Solution
If 2
f(x)=x -3x and g(x)=2x+1
a. (g ∘ f) = 𝑔 𝑓 𝑥
2
= 2(𝑥 −3𝑥)+1
2
= 2𝑥 − 6𝑥 + 1 ans.
Solution
If 2
f(x)=x -3x and g(x)=2x+1
b. (f ∘ g) = f 𝑔 𝑥
2
= (2𝑥 + 1) − 3(2𝑥 + 1)
= 4𝑥 2
+ 2 2𝑥 + 1 − 6𝑥 − 3
2
= 4𝑥 + 4𝑥 + 1 − 6𝑥 − 3
2
=4𝑥 − 2𝑥 − 2 ans.

Example
1. Elen’s mother has a square vegetable garden with an area of 144
square meters along the barangay road. Her husband desired to
fence the front side of the garden, how long is the front side?
SOLUTION
Let b= be the length of the front side of the garden
GIVEN: Area of a square=144 sq. m
Asked: length of one side of the square garden
Equation:
Area = b 2
144 = b2
144 = 𝑏 2
