Chapter 4
Data Communication
 Differentiate the following.
i. Analog signal vs. digital signal

Analog Signal Digital Signal

Nature of Signal
Analog signals are continuous in nature. Digital signals are discrete in nature.
Form of Data
Analog signal transmits data in wave Digital signal transmits data in binary
form. form.
Noise Affection
Analog signals can be affected by noise. Digital signals can’t be affected by noise.
Accuracy
Analog signals are not 100% accurate. Digital signals are 100% accurate.
Range of Data
Analog signal has no fixed range. Digital signal has finite range i.e. between
0 and 1.
Representation
Analog signals are represented by sine Digital signals are represented by square
wave. wave.
Example
The human voice is the best example of The common example of digital signal is
analog signal. digital image where pixels are
represented as ON and OFF.

ii. Guided media vs. unguided media

Guided Media Unguided Media

Nature of Transmission
Guided media transmits data through Unguided media uses air as a medium for
physical cables. data transmission.
Alternate Name
It is referred to as wired communication It is referred to as wireless
or bounded transmission media. communication or unbounded
transmission media.
Direction
The guided media provides direction to Unguided media do not direct the signal.
the signal.
Cost
It is a less expensive way of data It is more expensive way of data

transmission. transmission.
Way of Transmission
Data is transmitted in the form of current. Data is transmitted in the form of waves.
Attenuation
Guided media experience less signal Unguided media suffers from significant
attenuation. signal loss.
Bandwidth
Guided media offers higher bandwidth as Unguided media offers lesser bandwidth
compared to most unguided media. as compared to guided media.
Interference
Guided media provide better security as Unguided media are more bullenerable to
they are difficult to intercept without eaves droping.
physical access to the cables.
Examples
Twisted pair cable, coaxial cable, fiber Radio waves, microwaves, infrared waves
optic cable etc. etc.

iii. Data rate vs. baud rate

iv. Router vs. switch
v. Radio wave vs. microwave
vi. Synchronous vs. asynchronous transmission mode
 What is data communication? Explain the basic components of a communication
system.
Data Communication:
Data Communication is the process of sending and receiving data from one place to
another.
Components of a Communication System:
The basic components of a communication system are:
o Sender
o Receiver
o Message
o Protocol
o Transmission Medium

Sender: A device used in a communication system to send or transmit data to another device is
called Sender. It is also called Source and Transmitter. A sender may be a computer,
workstation, telephone handset, video camera, mobile phone, radio or television station.

Receiver: A device used in a communication system to receive data from another device
(sender) is called Receiver. It is also called Sink and Destination. A receiver may be a computer,
workstation, telephone handset, mobile phone, radio, fax machine or printer.
Message: A message is a piece of information or data that is to be transferred from source to
intended destination. It may consist of text, numbers, pictures, sounds, videos or any
combination of these.
Protocol: A set of rules that governs or guides data communication is called Protocol. It
represents an agreement between the communicating devices. Without a proper protocol, the
devices may be connected but they cannot communicate with each other.
Transmission Medium: Transmission medium is the path or channel through which transmitted
or received from one location to another in a communication system. The sender must choose
proper medium for transmitting the message. This choice of communication medium depends
upon the communication features. The twisted pair cable, fiber optic cable, microwave, satellite
system etc. are used as communication medium.
 Why communication devices are used in a communication system? Explain with reason.
 What is guided transmission media? Explain different types of guided media with
advantages and disadvantages of each.
 Explain the following unguided transmission media.
 What are transmission impairments? Explain different causes of transmission
impairments.
 Explain any five communication devices.
