The data is collected in order to analyse and explain a socio-economic
problem.

SOURCES OF DATA COLLECTION

Primary Data - " First hand data "


Data originally collected in the process of investigation {by the
investigator for his own purpose} is known as primary data.

Secondary Data - " Second hand data "


It for refers to the data which are already in existance and which is
collected earlier for some other purpose.

"A particular set of data when collected by the investigator for a


specific purpose from the source of origin, would be primary data
and when the same data used by some other investigator for his own
purpose then treated as Secondary Data".

Modes of data collection (primary data)
A) Personal interviews
1) Direct personal investigation Under this, the investigators
establishes direct relation with the persons from whom the
information is to be obtained.

Suitability
Field is not very large
Greater degree of originality is required
Accuracy is required
Information must kept secret (sensitive information)

Merits
Reliable information
Accurate data
Original data
Related information
(investigator can obtain other related information)

Demerits
Costly
Time consuming
Limited coverage

2) Indirect oral investigation


Under this method, the information is not collected from the
concerned person but collected orally from other persons who are
expected to possess the information (witnesses)

Suitability
Large area of investigation
direct contact is not possible
Concerned person is not capable of giving information

Merits
Cost efficient
Easy way
Wide coverage
Expert opinion

Demerits
Less accurate
Possibility of personal bias
Doubtful conclusions

3) Information from local sources or correspondents


The investigator appoints local persons or correspondents (Khabri) at
different places. They collect information in their own way and pass on
the same to the investigator.

Area of investigation is large
continuous information is required
Only acceptable accuracy is needed

Wide coverage
Continuity
Special purpose

Demerits
Personal Biased
Lack of originality
Less accurate

B) Information through questionnaires & Schedules
(form of Questions)

1) Mailing [Questionnaire] surveys


According to this method, a Questionnaires is mailed to the
respondent will a letter attached of giving the purpose of enquiry.
The respondent has to put the answers against it and return it back
to the investigator [via mail, post etc.]

2)Enumerator’& method
A questionnaire is prepared and as enumerator himself approaches
the respondent with the questionnaire. The enumerator himself fills
the schedules after seeking information from the respondents.
