general?
5. A solid steel shaft is to transmit a torque of 10 KN-m. if the shearing stress is not to

1.[a].An axial pull of 40,000 N is acting on a bar consisting of three sections of length 30
cm, 25 cm, and 20 cm and of diameters 2 cm, 4 cm and 5 cm respectively. If the Young’s
Modulus is 2 x 105 N/mm2 , determine: (i) stress in each section and (ii) total extension

[b]A bar of 30 mm diameter is subjected to a pull of 60 kN. The measured extension on
gauge length of 200 mm is 0.1 mm and change in diameter is 0.004 mm. Calculate (i)
Young’s Modulus (ii) Bulk Modulus and (iii) Poison’s Ratio.
2. A point is subjected to tensile stresses of 200 MPa and 150 MPa on two mutually
perpendicular planes and an anticlockwise shear stress of 30 MPa. Determine the values
of normal, shear stresses, maximum and minimum principal stresses on a plane inclined

3.[a]What are the different types of beams? Differentiate between a cantilever and a
simply supported beam.
[b]A beam of span 12 m is simply supported at two-point 8 m apart with equal
overhanging on either. The beam carries a uniformly distributed load of 2.5 kN/m run
over the entire span. Construct the SFD and BMD. Locate also the point of contraflexure.
4.Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the beam shown in Fig.1. Also
find the position and magnitude of the maximum bending moment.
5[a]. The following data pertains to a tension test conducted in a laboratory. i) Diameter

load of 10 kN = 0.035 mm iv) Load at yield point = 110 kN v) Maximum load = 190 kN vi)
Length of specimen after failure = 255 mm vii) Neck diameter = 12.25 mm Determine:
(a) Young’s Modulus (b) Yield stress (c) Ultimate stress (d) Percentage elongation (e)
Percentage reduction in area (f) Safe stress using a factor of safety of 1.5.
[b]Briefly discuss about gradual, sudden, impact and shock loadings.
6. Sketch the shear force and bending moment diagrams showing the salient values for
the loaded beam shown in the figure 1 below.
7. A steel rod of 20mm diameter passes centrally through a copper tube of 50mm
external diameter and 40 mm internal diameter. The Tube is closed at each by rigid
plates of negligible thickness. The nuts are tighttened tightly home on the projections
parts of the rod. If the temperature of the assembly is raised by 500C, calculate the
stresses developed in copper and steel. Take Es = 200 6N/m2 and EC = 100 6N/m2 & αS
= 12 x 10-6/ 0C and αC = 18x10-6/ 0C
8. Draw the stress strain curve for mild steel mark the sailent features.
9. Determine the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the cantilever loaded as

10. A beam of span 10m is simply supported at two points 6m apart with equal overhang
on either side. Both the overhanging portions are loaded with a uniformly distributed
load of 2 kN/m run and the beam also carries a concentrated load of 10 kN at the mid
span. Construct the SF and BM diagrams and locate the points of inflexion, if any.
