DIGITAL FLUENCY

2 Credits Total: 30 Hours

Course Objective:
To provide basic knowledge of Computer and its usage.

Course Outcomes:
After completing this course, the student will be able to:
 Prepare flowchart and algorithm for a given problem.
 Elaborate the contemporary disruptive technologies
 Summarize the programming paradigms
 Classify the different types of networks and its applications

Unit 1: Introduction to Computers 05 hrs


General features of computer – Evolution of computers; Computer Applications – Data
Processing – Information Processing – Commercial – Office Automation – Industry and
Engineering – Healthcare – Education – Disruptive technologies.

Unit 2: Computer Organization 05 hrs


Central Processing Unit – Computer Memory – Primary Memory – Secondary Memory –
Registers – Cache Memory – Secondary Storage Devices – Magnetic and Optic Media – Input
and Output Units – OMR – OCR – MICR – Scanner – Mouse – Modem.

Unit 3: Computer Hardware and Software 10 hrs


Computer Language – Machine Language – Assembly Language – High Level Language;
System Software – Operating system – Programme Language Translators; Computer virus-
antivirus – Computer security; Elements of MS DOS and Windows OS; Computer arithmetic –
Binary, octal and hexadecimal number systems; Algorithm – Flowcharts – Pseudocode –
Illustrations; Elements of database and its applications.

Unit 4: Office Automation 05 hrs


Word processing and electronic spread sheet – An overview of WORD, EXCEL and
POWERPOINT; Elements of BASIC programming – Simple illustrations.

Unit 5: Networking 05 hrs


Types of networks – LAN, Intranet and Internet – Internet applications – World Wide Web – E-
mail – browsing and searching – Search engines – Cloud and its application.
