Preventive Maintenance
3 .1 Regular Maintenance
3.1.1 Activating the maintenance mode
Before carrying out maintenance activities, the maintenance mode of the FW101 device is
to be activated. The FW101 offers 2 possibilities to do this:
● Using the MEPA-FW software delivered with the device (
or
● manually, as described below.
‡ Install a jumper (maintenance switch) on the FW101 connectio unit
Figure 1 Maintenance switch (jumper) – installed at the the connection unit
Jumper (maintenance switch) to install
between terminal 4 and 9
The now activated Maintenance mode is indicated on the display on front of connection unit
and is output on the relay output 3. See → P. 15, Figure 2.

Preventive Maintenance
Figure 2 Display of the activated maintenance mode on the connection unit
3.1.2 Switching back to the measurement mode
When you have completed the maintenance activities, switch the system back to measur-
ing mode:
‡ Uninstall the jumper again on the connection unit.
The display indicates „concentration“ again, and the relay output 3 is deactivated.
● When the maintenance switch is set, warning and fault messages are sup-
pressed. The live zero value is given out at the analog output.
● If the FW101 was set into "Maintenance" mode via MEPA-FW („Software
maintenance“), this status is reset at a voltage loss (in this case the FW101
switch automatically into „Measurement“ after the operating voltage is swit-
ched on).
● If „Maintenance“ is set by an external switch, the FW101 remains in this
status as long as the contact is closed at the terminals 4, 9 (refer to the
FW100 operating instruction manual).
Maintenance agreement
Regular maintenance activities can be carried out by the plant operator. These activities
must be carried out by qualified persons (as described in Chapter 1) only. If requested, all
maintenance activities can also be performed by the SICK Service department, or an
authorized service partner. SICK offers a range of economical maintenance and repair
agreements. SICK undertakes all maintenance and servicing work specified in these
agreements. Wherever possible, specialists carry out repairs on site.

Preventive Maintenance
3.2 Maintaining the purge-air supply
You must carry out the following maintenance activities:
● Inspect the entire purge-air supply
● Clean the filter housing
● Replace the filter insert (if necessary)
The dust load and wear on the filter insert depend on the degree of contamination of the
ambient air that is drawn in. For this reason, we cannot provide specific recommendations
regarding maintenance intervals, although you are advised to inspect the purge-air unit in
short intervalls (approx.2 weeks) after commissioning. The maintenance intervals can then
be optimized accordingly.
● If the purge-air supply is not maintained at regular intervals or maintenance
is not thorough enough, it can fail and destroy the sender/receiver unit.
● You must ensure that the purge-air supply is functioning properly when the
sender/receiver unit is installed. When replacing a damaged purge-air hose,
you must remove the sender/receiver unit beforehand
Inspection
‡ Check the running noise of the fan at regular intervals; an increased noise level can indi-
cate a fan failure.
‡ Check that all the hoses are secure and free of damage.
‡ Check the filter insert for contamination.
You must replace the filter insert when:
● a high degree of contamination is visible on the filter surface
● the purge-air quantity is considerably less than during operation with a new filter..
You must not switch off the purge-air supply when cleaning the filter housing or
replacing the filter insert, which means that the sender/receiver unit do not
have to be removed from the duct.
3.2.1 Connection unit with integrated purge-air supply
Cleaning or replacing the filter insert, part no. 7047560
‡ Open the door of the connection unit using the appropriate key.
‡ Remove the clamping tape at the filter output (1) and remove the filter from the gland
(2). Refer to → P. 18, Figure 4.
‡ Remove the filter housing.
‡ Turn the filter housing cover in the direction of the arrow to "OPEN" and remove it.
‡ Remove the filter insert and replace it with a new one.
‡ Clean the filter housing and housing cover with a cloth and brush.
You must only use a cloth soaked in water to wet-clean the components. Make
sure that you dry the components thoroughly.

3.3.2 Checking the purge-air hoses and hose clamps
‡ Check the purge-air hoses by hand to ensure that they are sufficiently elastic and are
not leaking. Replace them if they are leaking.
‡ Check the purge-air hoses to ensure that the connection points are secure.
‡ Replace defective hose clamps.
‡ Check the seals on the housing by hand. Proceed with care if the purge-air attachment
is hot.
‡ Replace defective seals.
3.3.3 Checking the noise of the blower
‡ Check on the if the blower is running smoothly and quiet.
3.3.4 Checking the under-pressure monitor and differential pressure monitor (option)
‡ Check the under-pressure monitor on the purge-air unit filter to ensure that it works
properly.
‡ To do this activate the under-pressure monitor by holding the filter intake glands
shut for a short time.
‡ If installed, check the differential pressure monitor at the purge-air gland of the GM31
purge-air attachment.
‡ When the purge-air supply is interrupted for a short time, the differential pressure moni-
tor should be activated.
‡ Replace defective monitors.
3.4 Maintaining the sender/receiver unit
WARNING: Damage as a result of improper working
● Make sure that none of the components or accessories of the FW101 are
damaged when performing maintenance work on.
● The purge-air supply must not be interrupted.
3.4.1 Cleaning of the sender/receiver unit (externally)
Clean the outside of the FW101 sender/receiver unit (particularly the measuring probe) at
regular intervals. Remove deposits with water or suitable mechanical aids.
