Sindak showed the lives of the Filipinos during the Japanese Colonization wherein it can
be seen their resiliency and bravery to fight the Japanese. The story was led by the two brothers
named Felipe and Nestor with their girlfriends, Sofia and Emilia.
The first part of the story focused on the two brothers. It was seen that they are opposite
to each other, Nestor graduated and became successful and soon built his own shoe business
while his brother Felipe ended up harvesting in the farm. They might be different but their care
and love for each other will endlessly remain, especially Felipe.
Nestor and Felipe were one of the victims in the bombing made by the Japanese Army.
Felipe had a big wound on his back but still took care of his brother. He put Nestor on his back
and had to walk kilometers just to reach the nearest hospital and get his brother cured.
Their relationship as brothers were a little shaky as Nestor became disabled for a while
that caused him to hate his brother for putting him in his situation instead of Felipe. But Felipe
did not give up and continued on taking care of his brother, Nestor.
The bombing in Intramuros resulted to the formation of a group against the occupation of
the Japanese. It was a group of farmers named Guerilla or the Hukbalahap ( Hukbong laban sa
mga Hapon. They started with few people and started to recruit some Filipinos to join their
group. Meanwhile, Felipe was walking after he broke up with Sofia. He ended up meeting the
group of guerillas and was influenced to join them. He therefore joined the group for his brother
and for his lost girlfriend, Sofia.
On the other hand, Sofia was used by the two siblings Salvacion and Mauricia for the
mickey mouse money. Japanese army bought Sofia and always hurt her for resisting him.
Salvacion then realized the hardship and the cruel situation of Sofia so he decided to let her go.
Hence, on her way out she ended up seeing the Japanese army and was shot to death.
Unknowingly, Felipe continues to fight for his love for Sofia and love for the country.
Hundreds of lives were sacrificed just to have the freedom we have right now. The members of
the guerillas were forced to march to their last breath in Bataan.
The film did not only show the resiliency of the Filipinos but to educate us the hardships
that they’ve been through to attain the life we have now. The film wants us to remember, to
commemorate and to tell us that “guerillas” are our real hero and not MacArthur who was paid to
look after the Philippines.
With the stage play they performed, we students must realize the importance of life and
always remember that we are so lucky for not experiencing what they’ve experienced.
