Analyze
1. From the PPSTs, the Southeast Asia Teachers Competency Standards
and the TEDx videos that you viewed, what competencies does a great
teacher possess?
The competencies that a great teacher must possess are adaptability, empathy, understanding, patience
and, most importantly communication skills and listening skills.
2. Are these competencies limited only to professional competencies?
No, because it also includes the personal qualities of a teacher. Competencies is not only limited to
professional competencies. As a prospective teacher, you can achieve great things in a step-by-step
procedure until you become a teacher.
3. For a teacher to be great, is it enough to possess the professional

competencies to plan a lesson, execute a lesson plan, manage a class,
assess a learning, compute and report grades? Explain your answer.
No, because you can do all those things without being a good teacher, let alone a great teacher. I have
observed lesson of teachers who have done all these things who clearly didn't know what they were talking
about and their students were as aware of that as I was.
4. For a teacher to be great, which is more important – personal qualities

or professional competencies?
For me,I think both of it are important, personal; qualities such as enthusiasm for the subject matter,
ability to develop positive relationship with students, leadership skills and so forth are all important in
enabling and creating conducive working relationship with students. Teachers without professional
competencies, especially in their knowledge base and understanding will not last long in the classroom.
Students will also lose trust and confidence in the teacher if they cannot effectively use a range of
learning methods and materials.
5.Who are the teachers that we remember most?
Students often remember teacher who were kind or funny or brilliant or passionate. They remember
teachers who cared about them. They remember teachers who were supportive or encouraging or saw
something in them no one else did. They remember teachers who challenge them and made them think.
