1.1 The leopard
1: The writer tells us how the tallest mountain peaks are at the
distance and how nature attracts us how the sun rises behind the
trees and how the morning cool air is filled with tweets and singing
of birds. The writer explains that nature is always peaceful, powerful
and impressive. It is an escape from worldly tensions and stress.
b. The good characters are Ruby and Praveen because they are
nature lovers but Toad, Stinger and Garjan Mankar (the film star)
are bad characters because they destroy peace in nature by the
sound of gunfire and hurt the leopard.
2. A) SUMMARY OF EXTRACT 1
Summary: It was a wonderful morning in the mountains Ruby and
her friend Praveen were walking in the mountains where they
found a campfire which was still warm. They got warmed up and
continued walking, after some time they heard a terrifying sound
of a gunshot and they continued to walk. They came across a
diverging and saw the three men (Toad, Stinger and Garjan
Mankar) who shot in front of them was an injured leopard.
B: The tone changes from peaceful to intense atmosphere after
the line
“Praveen raises his finger to his lips.” The characters become
tense and fearful after hearing gunshot.

C) The tone plays a significant part in the development of story.


Tone can make reader calmed, excited, and fearful and also is
used to gather attention of reader.
3. The use of verbs in present simple tense makes the story
immediate because we read the events which are happening in
present. The writer uses the verbs of present tense to show
pleasant scene of morning.

i) VICTIM FIGURE: This means the character human or non-
human which is innocent and something unfair happens to
him/her/it. In the story the leopard is presented as a helpless
victim due to its injury.
ii) VILLAN FIGURE: A character who commits evil/crime and is
hard-hearted and unjust. The three men holding gun and shooting
at the leopard make them villain like figure.
iii) THE LINK BETWEEN WRITER AND LEPORD: The link
between the leopard and writer is that the writer has vowed to
protect the leopard and takes a picture to use it as evidence
against shooters. The writer shows the sadness for leopard and
anger for the shooters.
iv) VOCABULARY SHOWING BEAUTY OF LEPOARD: Beautiful
coat, velvety sheen black rosettes and long white tail all these
word indicate beauty of leopard.
v) The verb ‘snarling’ is used to show the anger of leopard despite
being injured. The verb limp is used to show vulnerability of the
leopard. The verb thud shows the dead weight of it as it falls on
the ground.

2. The audio scripts include tone how the characters speak lines.
It also includes sound effects to make the audience to understand
what the characters speak.

3. Foliage: It means greenery like plants, shrubs, trees, etc


Cradle: It means to hold gently.

4. And the mountains roar with me


This line shows that not only Ruby is angry and sad at the death
of leopard but the nature itself is sad also.
The mountain is silent apart from howling wind.
The line reflects narrator’s surprise at the discovery of cub and its
need to remain silent to protect itself from shooters.

5. The writer creates a scene of beautiful morning in the lap of


nature. But the story shows that men take least care of nature and
its object and ruin the beauty of nature. Men hunt wild animals for
their pleasure and income. The nature is also sad and disturbed
at this attitude of man.
