CO1 Problem Statement

1. A 2.2 kW motor with torque to ampere ratio of 1.27 Nm/A is loaded with following duties for
following durations supplied with applied peak voltage of AC 1-ph 325 V and running with rated
speed of 1500 rpm, (a) With a load of 10 A for 5 secs, (b) Without load for 5 secs,(c) With load torque
7 Nm for 3 secs and (d) With full load for 3 secs. Calculate the equivalent torque.
2 A motor drive system operates in multiple quadrants. Analyse in details the quadrant operation of
electric car motor drives.
3. A motor has a heating time constant of 60 min and cooling time constant of 90 min. When run
continuously on full load of 30 kW, the final temperature rise is 50°C. Determine the amount of load
motor handle for 10 minutes if it is followed by shut down for a long time so that it can cool down.
Determine the maximum value of the load it can supply if it is on an intermittent load for 10 minutes
and then shut down for 10 minutes?
4. A variable speed d.c drive has rated power of 10 kW, rated speed of 1500 rpm drives a load that
comprises a constant load of TL = 30 Nm. The inertia of the drive system is 0.10 kg.m2. Estimate the
time taken to accelerate the load from zero to 800 rpm, assuming the drive develops rated torque
during the acceleration phase.
5. The drive system is characterized by the following parameters: J = 10 kg-m2, T = 100-0.1N, N-m,
Passive load torque Tl = 0.05 N, N-m. Here, ‘N’ represents the speed of the drive system in revolutions
per minute (rpm). At the outset, the drive is functioning in a condition of equilibrium. The current
situation is to be reversed. The motor characteristic is modified to T = -100-0.1N, where T represents
torque and is measured in N-m. Calculate the time shift.
6. A motor is responsible for powering two loads. Rotational motion is observed in certain phenomena.
The motor is connected to the system through a reduction gear with a gear ratio of a = 0.1 and an
efficiency of 90%. The load possesses a moment of inertia of 10 kg-m2 and experiences a torque of
10 N-m. The load in question exhibits translational motion and possesses a mass of 1000 kg. It is
being raised at a constant velocity of 1.5 m/s. The efficiency of coupling between the load and the
motor is 85%. The motor exhibits an inertia of 0.2 Kg-m2 and operates at a consistent rotational speed
of 1420 rpm. Calculate the power produced by the motor and the equivalent inertia related to the
motor shaft.
7. A motor has a heating time constant of 50 min and cooling time constant of 80 min. When run
continuously on full load of 30 kW, the final temperature rise is 50°C.
(a) Determine the amount of load motor handle for 10 minutes if it is followed by shut down for

CO2 Problem Statement
1. For an SCR, the gate-cathode characteristics has a straight-line slope of 130. For trigger voltage of
15V and allowed gate power dissipation of 0.5watts, compute the gate-source resistance.
2. A single phase 230 V, 1.5kW heater is connected across single phase 230 V, 50 Hz supply through a
diode. Calculate the power delivered to the heater element. Find also the peak diode current and input
power factor.
3. A dc battery of constant emf E is being charged through a resistor as shown in the Fig.1. For source
voltage of 230V, 50Hz and for R= 20 Ω, E=250 V.

Find:
(a) the value of average charging current,
(b) the power supplied to battery and dissipated in the resistor,
(c) supply power factor
(d) the charging time in case battery capacity is 1500Wh, and
(e) rectifier efficiency and PIV of the diode.
4. A load of R = 60 Ω is fed from 1-phase, 230V, 50Hz supply through a step-up transformer and then
one diode. The transformer turns ratio is two. Find the VA rating of transformer. Given, transformer
utilization factor (TUF) = 0.2865.
5. A single phase 230 V, 1.2kW heater is connected across single phase 230 V, 50 Hz supply through an
SCR. For firing angle delays of 35° and 60° , calculate the power absorbed in the heater element.
6. A single-phase transformer, with secondary voltage of 230V, 50Hz, delivers to load R=20Ω through
a half-wave, controlled rectifier circuit. For a firing angle delay of 30° , compute (a) the rectification
efficiency, (b) form factor, (c) voltage ripple factor, (d) transformer utilization factor and (e) PIV of
thyristor.
7. A boost converter used in a hybrid electrical vehicle has input voltage of 20 V, and output voltage of
50 V. The switching frequency is 25 kHz. The inductance L= 200 µH and load resistance R= 20 Ω
and filter capacitance C =400 µF. Estimate: (a) duty ratio, (b) average value of input and output
currents, (c) inductor peak to peak ripple current (d) minimum and maximum values of inductor
current.
8. A buck-boost converter used in a hybrid electrical vehicle has input voltage of 16V, duty ratio is 0.3
and switching frequency is 30kHz. The inductance L=200µH and filter capacitance C=250µF.
Average load current is 1.5A. Calculate (a) average output voltage, (b) peak to peak ripple values of
inductor current and capacitor voltage, (c) average and peak values of source current.
9. For industrial application, design a boost converter and derive the following expressions: (a) output
voltage in terms of input voltage, (b) peak to peak ripple current and ripple voltage in terms of circuit
components, frequency, output voltage and duty ratio.
10. Explain the working of buck-boost converter used in many battery powered portable applications
with the help of its circuit diagram and relevant waveforms. Give its advantages and disadvantages.
11. To design the buck-boost converter for EV applications, derive the following: (a) expression for
output voltage in terms of input voltage, (b) expression for peak to peak ripple inductor current and
peak to peak ripple voltage across capacitor in terms of circuit components, supply voltage, frequency
and duty ratio.
12. Design a Buck-Boost converter for electric automobiles with following specifications: Vin =12 V/48V,
Vo= 48V/12V, Po = 60W, switching frequency f = 20 kHz, peak to peak ripple current 10% of load
current and ripple voltage ∆VC= 10mV.
CO3 Problem Statement
1. A 220V dc series motor has armature and field resistances of 0.4 and 0.7 respectively. When
running at 1100 rpm the motor draws 15A from the supply. Calculate the torque delivered.
2. A shunt machine develops an ac e.m.f. of 250V at 1700 r.p.m. Find its torque and mechanical
power developed for an armature current of 60A. State the simplifying assumptions.
3. Determine the developed torque and shaft torque of 220V, 4-pole series motor with 800
conductors wave-connected supplying a load of 8.2 kW by taking 45A from the mains. The flux per
pole is 25mW and its armature circuit resistance is 0.6.
4. A 220V dc shunt motor runs at 500 r.p.m. when the armature current is 50A. Calculate the speed if
the torque is doubled. Given that Ra = 0.2 .
5. A 4-pole, 220-V shunt motor has 540 lap-wound conductors. It takes 32A from the supply mains and
develops output power of 5.595 kW. The field winding takes 1A. The armature resistance is 0.09
and the flux per pole is 30mWb. Calculate (i) the speed and (ii) the torque developed.
6. When driven at speed of 150 RPM with flux per pole of 0.03 Wb, a DC generator has an EMF of 300
V. If the speed is increased by 13 RPM and at the same time, flux is reduced to 0.029 Wb, then
estimate the value of induced emf.
7. Examine the construction and working of DC Motor. Justify the answer with neat sketch.
8. A d.c. generator has an armature e.m.f of 100 V when the useful flux per pole is 20 mWb and the
speed is 800 r.p.m. Determine the generated e.m.f. (a) with the same flux and a speed of 1000 r.p.m.,
(b) with a flux per pole of 24 mWb and a speed of 900 r.p.m.
9. Inspect the important features of DC Machine in context of industrial application.
10. The armature of a 6 pole DC Generator has 650 wave winded conductors. Calculate the generated
EMF when the flux per pole is 0.055 Wb and speed of the generator is 300 RPM. Also, determine
the speed at which armature must be driven to generate an EMF of 550 V if the flux is reduced to
0.05 Wb.
11. Examine the key components of a DC machine in the context of an industrial application.
CO4 Problem Statement
1. Is induction motor runs in asynchronous speed? Justify.
2. Drive the expressions for effect of slip on rotor frequency of induction motor.
3. A 220 V, 20hp, four pole, 50 Hz, Y-connected induction motor has a full-load slip of 6%. Calculate: (a)
synchronous speed of this motor, (b) rotor speed of this motor at rated load, (c) rotor frequency of
this motor at rated load, (d) shaft torque of this motor at rated load.
4. A 420 V, 3-Φ, two pole, 50 Hz induction motor is running has at a slip of 7%. Find: (a) speed of
magnetic fields in revolutions per minute, (b) speed of rotor in revolutions per minute, (c) slip speed
of the rotor, (d) rotor frequency.
5. A 3-Φ, 560V, 200hp, 50Hz, four-pole induction machine delivers rated output power at a slip of 0.08.
Determine the :
(a) Synchronous speed and motor speed,
(b) Speed of rotating air gap field,
(c) Frequency of the rotor circuit,
(d) Slip in rpm,
(e) Rotor induced voltage at the operating speed if the stator-to-rotor turn ratio is 1:0.5.
6. A step up chopper has input voltage of 420 V and output voltage of 860 V. If the conducting time of
thyristor –chopper is 200 μs, compute the pulse width of output voltage. In case output-voltage
pulse width is halved for constant frequency operation, find the average value of new output
voltage.
7. A type-A chopper has input dc voltage of 400 V and a load of R = 20 Ω in series with L = 100 mH. If
the load current varies linearly between 14 A and 18 A, find the time ratio 𝑇𝑜𝑛 ⁄𝑇𝑜𝑓𝑓 for this chopper.
8. A 3-Φ, 560V, 20hp, 50Hz, four-pole, 1828 rpm induction machine delivers full output power to a load
connected to its shaft. The windage and friction loss of the motor is 850W. Estimate the: (a)
Mechanical power developed, (b) Air gap power, (c) Rotor copper loss.
9. A single phase bridge type cycloconverter has input voltage 230 V, 50 Hz and load of R = 10 Ω, Output
frequency is one third of input frequency. For a firing angle delay of 30°, Calculate: (a) rms value of
output voltage (b)rms current of each converter (c) rms current of each thyristor and (d) input power
factor.
10. A hybrid variable reluctance stepping motor has 8 main poles which have been castleated to have 5
teeth each. If it has 50 teeth, determine the steeping angle. A stepper motor has a step angle of
3.5°. Calculate (a) resolution, (b) number of steps required for the shaft to make 30 revolutions and
(c) shaft speed, if the stepping frequency is 3500 rps.
11. A 3-phase, 6-pole, 50 Hz induction motor has a slip of 2% at no load and 4% at full load. Determine:
(a) synchronous speed; (b) no load speed; (c) full load speed; (d) frequency of rotor current at
standstill; (e) frequency of rotor current at full load.
12. Investigate the various induction motor types and their workings. Draw a relevant diagram to
describe your response.
CO5 Problem Statement = 7
1. A 3-Φ variable reluctance stepper motor has the following parameters: 𝑅𝑊 = 2Ω, 𝐿𝑊 = 35𝑚𝐻
(average phase winding inductance), I = 4A (rated winding current). Design a simple unipolar drive
circuit such that the electrical time constant is 3 msec at phase turn on and 1 msec at phase turnoff.
The stepping rate is 400 steps per second.
2. A stepper motor has a step angle of 3.5°. Determine (a) resolution, (b) number of steps required for
the shaft to make 35 revolutions and (c) shaft speed, if the stepping frequency is 3000 rps.
3. Examine the BLDC motor used in various Drone applications.
4. Examine the different types of Stepper motor employed in various industrial applications.
5. Distinguish the DC and AC servo motors used in industrial applications.
6. For use in electric vehicle applications, BLDC motors are preferred to PMDC motors. Give your views
in support of the response. Justify the BLDC motor's specifics.
7. Give a thorough classification of the various stepper motor types based on their uses and operating
principles.
