Storage Devices

A storage device is any type of computing hardware that is used for storing, data file, pictures,
software, documents etc. Storage devices can hold and store information both temporarily and
permanently. They may be internal or external to a computer.

Main or Primary Memory or Internal Memory

The Main memory (Primary Memory) of CPU is the place where the computer
program and data are stored during processing. There is usually two type’s primary
storage.
RAM(RAM) was first invented in 1968 by Robert Dennard.
Random Access Memory is the unit in a computer system. It is the place in a
computer where the operating system, application programs and the
data in current use are kept temporary so that they can be accessed by the
computer’s processor. It is also called ‘volatile’ The contents of RAM are no more
available once the computer is turned off.

ROM(ROM) was first introduced by Robert Dennard in the 1960s

ROM: It stands for Read-Only Memory. The data written or stored in these devices
are non-volatile, i.e, once the data is stored in the memory cannot be modified or
deleted. The memory from which will only read but cannot write it. This type of
memory is non-volatile. The information is stored permanently during manufacture
only once. ROM stores instructions that are used to start a computer.

Secondary storage devices: Secondary storage devices usually have larger storage capacity,
and they store data permanently. They can be either internal or external to the computer. These
types of devices include the hard disk, USB storage device,
USB Universal serial Bus ,

Seven companies came together to developing USB in 1995 and officially in

launched in 1996
It is also known as Pen Drive: flash drive, data traveler It is a portable storage
device We can directly connect these devices to our computers and laptops, It is the
most commonly used device to store data permanently.

o CD: It is known as Compact Disc

o CD-R CD-R(Compact disc Recordable In this type of CD, once the data is
written cannot be erased. It is read-only.
o CD-RW: (Compact disc Rewritable It stands for Compact Disc Read
Write. In this type of CD, you can easily write or erase data multiple times.
o MB) to 700 MB of data
o .
 DVD: It is known as Digital Versatile Disc. it comes in two different sizes one is
4.7GB and 8.5GB DVDs look like CDs but the storage capacity of DVDs is more
than as compared to CDs. It is of two types:
o DVD-R: It stands for Digital Versatile Disc Recordable. In this type of
DVD, once the data is written cannot be erased. It is read-only. It is
generally used to write movies, etc.
o DVD-RW: Digital Versatile Disc Rewritable It stands for Digital Versatile
Write. In this type of DVD, you can easily write or erase data multiple
times.

 Hard disk

The hard disk is a secondary storage device, which is designed to store data
permanently. The secondary storage devices include a large storage capacity as
compared to the primary storage devices. The data stored in a hard disk is retained
when our computer system shuts down.
