3. Explain with simple sketch the working of a centrifugal compressor.
4. Explain the concept of sensible heat factor.
5. State Joule-Thomson effect.
6. Explain the factors affecting human comfort.
7. List any six sources of heat gain. (4 x 6 = 24)

PART-C
(Answer any of the three units from the following. Each full question carries 15 marks)

UNIT – I

III. (a) Explain the working of air refrigerator based on Bell-Coleman cycle with the help of diagram,
P-V and T-S diagrams. (8)
(b) A refrigerating machine of 6 tonnes capacity working on Bell-Coleman cycle has an upper
limit of pressure of 5.2 bar. The pressure and temperature at the start of compression are 1
bar and 160C respectively. The compressed air is cooled at constant pressure to a temperature
of 410C, enters the expansion cylinder. Assuming both expansion and compression process to
be isentropic with ɣ= 1.4, Calculate .
1) COP; 2) Quantity of air in circulation per minute; 3) Power required to drive the unit, for
air take ɣ= 1.4 and Cp=1.003 kJ/kg K. (7)

OR
IV. (a) List the factors affecting the COP of vapour compression refrigeration system. (8)
0 0
(b) The temperature limits of an ammonia refrigerating system are 25 C and -10 C. If the gas
is dry at the end of compression, Calculate COP of the cycle assuming no undercooling
of the liquid ammonia. Use the following table for the properties of ammonia. (7)
