What is Emotional Intelligence (EQ)-

Also known as emotional quotient (EQ), is the ability to understand, use, manage, and express your own
emotions in positive ways to communicate effectively, build healthy relationships, and make sound
decisions.

Emotional intelligence is a valuable asset in all aspects of life, from personal relationships to professional
success.

The ability to monitor own’s own emotions, to discriminate among them, and to use the information to
guide one’s own thinking and actions.
EQ vs IQ
• IQ remains relatively fixed for an individual’s lifetime.

• EQ can increase over in an individual’s lifespan.

• IQ may be more crucial for academic achievement and certain jobs requiring strong cognitive skills,
like engineering or computer science.

• EQ may be more crucial for leadership roles, building strong relationships, and navigating
social situations.

• IQ measures your cognitive and intellectual skills, like working memory,


analytical thinking, and knowledge retention.

• EQ refers to your emotional abilities and social skills, including cognitive empathy,

The Intra - Personal Realm
The intrapersonal realm of emotional intelligence refers to the inward-facing aspect of emotional
intelligence, focusing on understanding and managing our own emotions. It's the foundation upon which
interpersonal skills and social awareness are built.

The intrapersonal realm of EI is about being in tune with your inner world and developing the ability to
manage your emotions effectively. This allows you to navigate life's challenges with greater clarity,
resilience, and self-compassion, and ultimately achieve your full potential.

By nurturing intrapersonal skills, one can cultivate a deeper sense of awareness, emotional well being and
inner peace contributing to a more fulfilling and balanced life.

Assertiveness – The ability to recognize how you’re feeling, why you’re feeling that and the
impact your behavior has on others

Over the next 2 weeks continue to write down vignettes of where you behaved assertively
passively and aggressively also, list the self-talk that accompanied each one of them.
For situations where you behaved passively, dispute and debate the self-talk that interfered
with your being assertive
