The original topography of the region where we currently reside included features such as
rivers, mountains, forests, and a combination. We rely on the living things that comprise the web of
life, of which we are a part, to breathe air, use resources to produce food, and depend on the
community of living things to support us. We use water for drinking and other everyday tasks.
Everything around us is our environment, and preserving our way of life depends on keeping its
vital systems in good working order.
The interdisciplinary field of Environmental Science aims to comprehend and examine every
facet of the natural world thoroughly. It encompasses a broad spectrum of phenomena, including
the physical processes that form our planet, the dynamic interactions within ecosystems, and the
substantial environmental impact of human activity. It investigates the intricate relationships
between geological, atmospheric, hydrological, and biological processes that govern the planet's
physical systems to comprehend the profound mysteries of the Earth's environment.
So, sit back, relax, and enjoy! Have fun learning.

Hello there! This module will guide you as you learn the concepts

KEEP THIS
IN MIND! Nature and Scope of Environmental Science
. . . .
The term 'Environment' is derived from the French word
'Environner', which means to encircle, surround, or go
around and is the source of the English word "environment." The environment is
the entirety of the land, water, and air, as well as their relationships with each
other, humans, and other living things. The term "environment" refers to the
relationships between humans, other living things, including plants, animals, and
microorganisms, and the elements of water, air, and land.
Environmental Science studies everything that makes up or affects the
biophysical environment that sustains life on Earth. This covers ecological
systems, biodiversity, climate change, earth processes, alternative energy
sources, biodiversity, natural resources, and all forms of pollution. Intricate
interactions between physical, chemical, and biological processes and significant
human intervention propel these entities or processes.
Consequently, because Environmental Science incorporates knowledge
from many fields, it is inherently multidisciplinary. The following are the disciplines
that are interrelated to Environmental Science

.Multidisciplinary Nature of Environmental Science

 Biology is the scientific study of living things and their physiological

functions.
 Ecology is the study of the relationships between organisms and their
environment.
 Chemistry deals with substances' properties, composition, and structure.

8
 Atmospheric science combines the multidisciplinary discipline of
comprehending the composition and behavior of Earth's atmosphere,
physics, and chemistry.
 Oceanography is the scientific study of all things related to the oceans
and seas around the world, including their origin, geologic structure,
physical and chemical characteristics, and marine life.
 Geology concerns the Earth's structure, composition, physical properties,
constituent rocks and minerals, and surficial features.
 Archaeology is the scientific study of artifacts from earlier human
existence and activity.
 Anthropology is a discipline within philosophy that seeks to unify several
empirical investigations of human nature to understand individuals as
creatures of their environment and creators of their values.
 Sociology- studies human societies, their interactions, and the processes
that preserve and change them.
 History- this discipline that studies the chronological record of events,
usually attempting, based on a critical examination of source materials, to
explain events.
 Political Science is the systematic study of governance by applying
empirical and generally scientific analysis methods.
 Engineering is the application of knowledge to maximize the use of
natural resources for human purposes.
 Economics examines the distribution, consumption, and production of
goods and services.
 Ethics concerns what is morally good, evil, and right and wrong. The term
is also applied to any moral values or principles theory system.

The question is how these disciplines or branches are involved in studying

Environmental Science. Several subfields within Environmental Science—such
as Environmental Studies, Environmental Engineering, Environmental
Economics, Environmental Ethics, Environmental Management, Environmental
Sociology, Environmental Biotechnology, and so forth—are typically regarded as
separate academic fields. While the methods used by these disciplines differ,
most of them focus primarily on environmental conservation. For instance,
environmental studies draw more heavily on the social sciences to comprehend
human relationships, attitudes, and environmental policies. Design and
technology for enhancing environmental quality are the main areas of focus for
environmental engineering. Environmental Ethics deals with people's rights and
obligations essential to the survival and well-being of the current human society,
future human generations, and other earthly species.

Scope of Environmental Science

9
Environmental Science focuses on topics or problems related to our
intricate life-supporting system; it has a broad scope. Here are the three
significant aspects of the Environmental Science:

 Conservation of Ecosystem and Biodiversity.

Protection and management are required to preserve the diversity and
functionality of natural habitats, species, and ecological processes. The
diversity of species, genes, and ecosystems within a particular area is
called biodiversity. Ecosystems are intricate networks of living things and
their physical surroundings. Conservation efforts aim to stop species
extinction, destroy habitats, and destroy ecosystem services like
pollination, clean water and air, and climate control. This entails
implementing policies to lessen invasive species introduction, pollution,
overexploitation, and habitat destruction.

 Conservation and Management of Natural Resources.

Maintaining the long-term availability and ecological balance of
Earth's natural resources, including minerals, water, forests, and wildlife,
refers to the sustainable management and protection of these resources. It
includes actions and regulations designed to reduce the loss of natural
resources, protect biodiversity, and uphold ecosystem services.

 Prevention and Control of Pollution.

Policies and procedures are implemented to reduce or completely
stop the release of pollutants into the environment. It entails locating
possible sources of pollution, weighing your options, and deciding on the
most effective methods for preventing or reducing pollution. The goal of
lowering the production and release of pollutants is to safeguard
ecosystems, the environment, and human health. Adopting cleaner
technologies, encouraging sustainable practices, enforcing regulations,
and increasing public awareness of the significance of pollution reduction
are a few examples of preventive control strategies. These initiatives seek
to lessen pollution's harmful effects while fostering a more sustainable and
wholesome environment.

Importance of Environmental Science

The different goals that fulfill protecting the environment are used to
describe the significance of Environmental Science. Seven goals are identified for
this importance:
 It helps us understand how changes in our surroundings and how our
regular and developmental activities affect the environment.

10
 It directs us to implement pollution prevention and control strategies to
establish a clean environment (clean air, water, land, and food).
 It guides the efficient use of our natural resources, including water, forests,
minerals, and fossil fuels, to produce the least waste through recycling and
conservation measures.
 It directs the general public to embrace the three characteristics above
being aware of how one's actions affect the environment, preventing and
controlling pollution, and using resources wisely in day-to-day activities.
 It guides industries in using efficient, clean technologies and pollution
control measures to operate in an environmentally friendly manner.
 It educates us on tackling difficult global environmental issues like
desertification, climate change, ozone layer depletion, and energy crises
using various interdisciplinary tools and techniques.
 Ensuring fair resource distribution between the current and future
generations and taking a holistic approach to protecting nature in all
aspects of life directs the development process toward sustainability
