ICT IN PERSPECTIVE

TYPES OF COMPUTERS

Two main categories of computers:

✖General purpose

✖Dedicated purpose
GENERAL PURPOSE COMPUTERS

A general purpose computer has an operating system that

can run many different productivity applications that can
perform a wide range of tasks

Examples:
Desktop PC Portable computers
Smartphones Servers
Desktop PC
Consist of the following parts:
✖Box (or systems unit) - contains the CPU, memory and
hard drive
✖Monitor All-in-one-PC
✖Keyboard The box and
✖Mouse screen come in
one unit, E.G:
Apples iMac
computer
Laptop, Notebook, Netbook and Tablets
These are portable computers designed to use miniature parts
with low power consumption, allowing them to operate on
batteries.

Note:
They are portable
Run on batteries
Difficult and expensive to upgrade
Don’t come with an optical drive
Laptop, Notebook, Netbook and Tablets
✖Laptop: portable computer with a full keyboard and flip
up monitor
✖Notebook: same as a laptop
✖Netbook: a smaller version of a laptop, but doesn't
have an optical drive
✖Tablet: portable computer with a touch screen. Some
come with a stylus.

✖They are fast
✖They can work 24/7
✖They cost less than people in the long run
✖They reduce the need for other resources
UNETHICAL USE OF COMPUTERS

✖Stealing: Piracy, identity theft and theft of data

✖Theft of computer time
✖Spreading false information
✖Creating malicious software (viruses)
