Topic: Peer to Peer Network

INTRODUCTION

This module is created to familiarize students on the concept of a

peer-to-peer network. Computers that are connected to the network can
share files and resources by establishing a peer-to-peer network. You can
set up two computers that can share files without a server using this
type of network system.
Learners should familiarize themselves on how to set up a peer-to-
peer network in order to create their own local network that can perform
basic networking tasks such as file sharing and printer sharing which
provides convenience and saves time.

SPECIFIC LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon the completion of this learning material, the learner should be able
to:
• Define what is a peer-to-peer network.
• Describe the characteristics of a peer-to-peer network
• Differentiate a peer-to-peer network from a client-server network
• Demonstrate the procedures on how to set up a peer-to-peer
network

INFORMATION SHEET 1.1

PEER-TO-PEER NETWORK SYSTEM

What is a Peer-to-Peer Network?

A peer-to-peer network is one in which two or more PCs share files

and access to devices such as printers without requiring a separate server
computer or server software.
A peer-to-peer network is an IT infrastructure in which two or more
computer systems connect in order to share resources. Workplaces may
set up this type of network by physically connecting computers into a
linked system or creating a virtual network. You can also set up computers
to be the clients and servers of their network.
Each device in the network is considered to be a peer with functions
that contribute to the network. Each device in a P2P network shares a part
of its resources with other networked computers. These resources can
include storage, bandwidth and processing power.

A P2P network is different from the client-server network that

people have traditionally used in networking. A client-server network is a

5|P age
connection between a client computer and a server computer to provide
the client with resources. In this network type, the client does not
contribute resources to the network.

Some major features of this network include:

• Each device in a P2P network gives resources to the network and

consumes resources that the network provides.

• In a P2P network, files are shared between the different

computers.

• Being a part of a P2P network enables sharing equipment such

as printers between the various devices in the network.

• The setup of a peer-to-peer network requires specialized software.

• Some P2P networks are formed by overlaying a virtual network

on a physical network. The network uses the physical connection
to transfer data while the virtual overlay allows the computers on
the network to communicate with each other.

Key advantages of a P2P network

Due to its architecture, a P2P network can offer many advantages

to its users, including:

• Easy file sharing: An advanced P2P network can share files

quickly over large distances.

• Reduced costs: There is no need to invest in a separate computer

for a server when setting up a P2P network.

• Adaptability: P2P network extends to include new clients easily.

This benefit makes these networks more flexible than client-
server networks.

• Reliability: Unlike a client-server network, which can fail if the

central server malfunctions, a P2P network will likely remain
functional even if the central server crashes.

6|P age
• High performance: While a client-server network performs less
effectively when more clients join the network, a P2P network can
improve its performance when more clients join it. This is
because each client in a P2P network is also a server that
contributes resources to the network.

• Efficiency: Emerging P2P networks enable collaboration between

devices that have different resources that can benefit the whole
network.

Client-Server vs. Peer-to-Peer

What is File Sharing?

File sharing is the practice of sharing or offering access to digital

information or resources, including documents, multimedia (audio/video),
graphics, computer programs, images and e-books. It is the private or
public distribution of data or resources in a network with different levels
of sharing privileges.

File sharing can be done using several methods. The most common
techniques for file storage, distribution and transmission include the
following:

• Removable storage devices

• Centralized file hosting server installations on networks
• World Wide Web-oriented hyperlinked documents
• Distributed peer-to-peer networks

Setting Up a P2P network on two computers without a router or

switch

1. Prepare the materials and equipment needed. You will need the
following:
• 2 sets of desktop or laptop computers

8|P age
• 1 crossover UTP cable

• 1 cable tester

2. Turn on both computers and check for functionalities

3. Test the crossover cable using the cable tester. See to it that the
lights match correctly (1 to 3 and 2 to 6).

9|P age
4. Connect the crossover cables to both computers and make sure that
it is properly plugged in. The ethernet indicator should appear on
lower right-hand corner of the screen.

5. Go to PC 1 and set the IP address of static.

a. Press windows key + R to open the run command and type in
ncpa.cpl to launch the ethernet adapter screen.

b. Right click the available network and select properties

10 | P a g e
c. Click Internet Protocol Version 4 and select properties.

d. Assign a static IP address. In this example PC 1 will be

192.168.105.2 with subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and gateway
of 192.168.105. Click OK to apply settings

select read/write and click share.

19 | P a g e
7. Click done.

8. Click Advanced Sharing

20 | P a g e
9. Click Permissions.

10. Check all check boxes to allow full control, change and read and
click Apply and OK

21 | P a g e
Do procedures 1-10 on the second computer and change the folder name
to PC 2.

How to check if Folder and File Sharing is Successful

In our previous task, both computers are already set up for peer to peer
and file and folder sharing. To check if file sharing is working, go to a
computer where you want to access the files via network. In this
example, go to PC 2 and access the shared folder of PC 1.

1. Press windows key + R to open the run command. Type in \\ and

the IP address of the computer you like to access. In this example
type in \\192.168.105.2 (IP Address of PC 1) and click OK.

2. The picture shows all the shared folders of PC 1.
