1 Climate Change

Weather tells the environmental condition in a specific place. It can


be rainy, sunny, windy or snowy while Climate describes the weather
conditions expected in a particular place in a specific time of the year.

Climate change refers to the significant change in the average


conditions of temperature and rainfall in a particular region over a long
period of time. An amazing scientific accord highlighted that global climate
change is due primarily to the human use of fossil fuels that releases
dioxide and alternative greenhouse gases into the air. The gases trap heat
inside the atmosphere, which may have a variety of effects on ecosystems.
the results square measure the following; (a) rising ocean levels, (b) severe
weather events, and (d) droughts that render landscapes additional
vulnerable to wildfires.

It is already happening in our planet even before it is inhabited by


humans but scientists have observed that changes nowadays are too
unusual, making them more alarmed. For over 20,000 years, much of the
European regions were covered with glaciers. Today, climate all over Europe
is quite warmer compared to its condition 20,000 years ago. Globally,
warming temperatures and changes in precipitation are observed. The
results of all these climatic changes include:
A. sea levels rising,
B. fewer mountain glaciers,
C. faster melting of the ice in Greenland, Antarctica and the Arctic, and
D. changes in flower and plant blooming times.

A lot of factors are contributory to the global climate change but


scientists have agreed that human activities have been the biggest
contributor to such change. Burning fuel in factories, cars and buses affects
the earth’s natural greenhouse. The heat of the planet is trapped in the

atmosphere making the Earth warmer. This phenomenon is called the


greenhouse effect.

Both production and consumption of goods contribute to global


warming. Production as in manufacturing utilizes technology that emits
large amount of carbon in the atmosphere. Distribution of goods such as
shipping and storage in warehouses and distribution centers also produces
hydrofluorocarbons that contribute to the greenhouse effect. Consumption
produces wastes especially non–biodegradable one that pollutes the
atmosphere when disposed through burning which also releases carbons.

The food consumption and production have a major impact on the


surroundings. The means we have a tendency to consume has each direct
and indirect impact on the surroundings. An example of this consumption is
that the uses of energy in our homes like television radio, computer, cars
and public utility jeepney that emit harmful gasses and caused pollution
and increased emissions of greenhouse gases that results in global climate
change.

Consumption conjointly vie an indirect impact towards our


surroundings from the assembly, process and transportation of the products
that we have a tendency to consume daily. Examples of this production of
goods we consume are the can goods, soft drinks, processed foods, shampoo
and many more..

In association, with consumption and production pattern within the


Philippines, the state of surroundings in our country along with the
emissions of greenhouse gasses, indicators on pollution and also the
generation of material discovered that each one indicators show
environmental degradation all told the domains being assessed (Sta.
Romana, 2017).

Disadvantages
A. Failing economy will have a domino effect on its trading partner in
another counter. This is evident among the European Union in which
bail-out was made to save an economically failing nation.
B. Wealth and power are concentrated in the hands of small group of
corporate elite putting smaller competitors in disadvantageous
situation resulting to weakening of their business capability that
usually ends up selling their business to bigger companies.

C. Introduction of international products and brand makes way for


business domination of bigger and developed countries making the
cultural exchange one-sided in favor of those who dominate the
market.

Six Ways Climate Change Will Affect PH Cities

PH cities face due to climate change.
Manila, Philippines – Climate change is happening now and it is
happening, not in far-flung corners of the world, but in human
communities.
Scientists say human activities are largely responsible for the
continued increase in average global temperatures, which causes climate
change. Global greenhouse gases emitted by the fossil fuel industry
(which gives us electricity and fuels our cars) trap heat in the Earth’s
atmosphere thus warming the entire planet.
Philippine cities will likely to experience at least one of these effects
of climate change:
1. More intense El Niño
The El Niño phenomenon occurs when the surface of ocean waters
on the southern Pacific becomes abnormally warm. The energy created
by this warming is so great that it can create an imbalance in the
weather in different parts of the world. In Southeast Asia, it can lead to
abnormally dry conditions.
El Niño can also make other weather events like storms highly
unpredictable. Weather will have extreme highs and lows, making it
“increasingly difficult to accurately predict weather patterns for purposes
of planning and normal business operations,” says a WWF-Philippines
study.

2. Sea surface temperatures to rise


By the end of the century, sea surface temperatures are expected
to rise by 1 to 4 degrees Celsius. This can lead to more powerful storms
because storms get their strength from heat rising from the sea.

In the Philippines, 4 and 5 degrees Celsius spike above the normal


sea surface temperature have been recorded. Warmer seas kill coral reefs
and can thus lead to a decline in fish catch, putting food security in
danger.
3. Ocean acidification
The shift in the pH levels of our oceans can lead to widespread
coral reef death. Because of the imbalance, shrimps are not able to
develop skins, oyster cannot develop shells. Fish larvae may not be able
to develop bones. This further endangers food security and the livelihood
of fishermen.
4. Sea levels to rise by 4 to 6 meters
Current data show an increase in sea surface heights. Scientists
say this is due to the melting of ice sheets in northern portions of the
globe like Antarctica and Greenland. Sea level rise by 4 to 6 meters can
submerge low-lying communities like Tacloban City which stands 3
meters above sea level.
5. Tropical cyclones to intensify
The creation of tropical cyclones is already being recorded in areas
where the phenomenon had never been observed. On Nov. 8, 2013,
Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan), said to be the strongest storm in
recorded history, devastated cities in the Visayas.
6. Rainfall, river flow, and flooding to intensify
Monsoon rainfall in the Philippines will reach new highs and lows.
Some parts of the country will experience an upward trend in rainfall
while other parts will experience an intensification of drought. These two
extreme poles of weather will make it more difficult for agriculture and
aquaculture sectors which are highly dependent on weather.
Philippine cities are already experiencing unprecedented amounts
of rainfall. In Tacloban City, rainfall increased by 257% from 1998 to
2011. More rainfall will lead to more flooding and can trigger landslides
in upland communities.

2. Control Population: Yes, if the population is controlled, then climate
change can also be controlled. How? Putting in simpler words, more
number of individuals suggests that additional demand of resources like
food and shelter resulted in additional usage or utilization of the earth.
3. Less use of Fossil Fuels: The high discharges of the greenhouses gases
are diminishing the ozone layer which gives global warming. It is then one
of the major causes of climate change.
4. Unplug your Devices: In almost every house, there are at least a dozen of
appliances which includes air conditioner, television, microwave, washing
machine and others. These devices lead to global warming, hence the
climate change.

5. Focus on Renewable Energy: Fossil fuels are going to be finished in an

8. Experimenting the Earth: There are many experiments being done on
Earth which might control climate change. Some ideas like, Geo-
engineering, radical interventions to either block sunlight or reduce
greenhouse gas are probably the last options to control the climate
change.
9. Upgrade in infrastructure: Buildings require cement and it is produced
by heating limestone giving rise to the carbon dioxide level. Upgrade in
infrastructure like, making the roads perfect, improving cement-making
processes and investing in new infrastructure or radically upgrading
existing highways and transmission lines would cut emission of
greenhouse gas and control climate change.
10. Personal Solutions to Global Warming: There are many steps which
everyone can take in order to control the climate change. A small step by
anyone can make a big difference.
▪ Drive less and cycle more while going to school or work.
▪ Upgrade your refrigerator and air conditioner, especially if they
are more than five years old.

Things to Remember!
Carbon emission from your home is directly correlated to everyday
energy consumption. One way to reduce your carbon footprint is to improve
energy efficiency:
Inside your home:

• When appliances are not in use, turn them off and unplug them. Even
small appliances like cell phone chargers waste energy when plugged
in all day. It is called ghost-electricity.
• Take shorter, cooler showers and turn off the tap when brushing your
teeth.
• Recycle everything you can.
• Replace incandescent light bulbs with CFL low energy bulbs, which
use just 20% of the energy of a normal light bulb and last 15 times
longer.
• When replacing older appliances, always opt for appliances that use
less power and receive a good energy rating.
At your office:

• Only print as many copies as absolutely needed. Instead of having


each employee have their own files, create a central filing system to
avoid having to make many copies of the same documents.
• Use smaller fonts when printing internal documents to save paper and
ink.
• Recycle everything, including ink cartridges and toner. Ask local
suppliers if they can deliver supplies in reusable bins rather than
cardboard boxes.
• Turn off and unplug equipment when not in use.
• Telecommunicate whenever possible, but make a commitment to do it
at least one day per week.
For your meetings:

• Ask your caterer for biodegradable tableware (plates, cups, utensils,


etc.) or use china and metal silverware.
• Monitor meeting room temperatures. Turn the heat down a few degrees
in winter and up a few degrees in summer, and encourage attendees to
dress in layers.
• Make sure lights and AV equipment in session rooms are turned off
when not in use. Ask your AV provider to unplug equipment at night.

• Offer a carbon-offset donation on your registration form; Many


companies will plant trees for as little as 50 cents each.
• Provide materials that are ecofriendly: recyclable, printed on recycled
paper, or go paperless altogether.

Let Us Study
There is broad-based agreement within the scientific community that
climate change is real. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the
National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and the National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration correspond that climate change is indeed
happening and is almost certainly due to human activity. The primary
reason behind climate change is the burning of fossil fuels, such as oil and
coal, which emits greenhouse gases into the atmosphere— primarily carbon
dioxide. Other human activities, such as agriculture and deforestation, also
contribute to the production of greenhouse gases that cause climate change.

Even small increases in Earth’s temperature caused by climate change


can have severe effects. The rising sea level due to the melting of the polar
ice caps is caused by climate change. The warming ocean temperatures are
associated with stronger and more frequent storms; additional rainfall,
particularly during severe weather events, leads to flooding and other
damage; an increase in the incidence and severity of wildfires threatens
habitats, homes, and lives; and heat waves contribute to human deaths and
other consequences.

Global warming causes change in climate patterns. The consumption


of paper leads to production of paper industries, the use of woods for
constructions of houses and turning forest to
residential/industrial/agricultural lands leads towards the destruction of
forests and killing of trees which resolves to reach highest heat index.

Overharvesting, deforestation, land degradation, and exploiting nature


for natural resources for human needs can leading toward having limited
resources in the future, it destroys animals’ natural habitats and cause to
global warming due to the devastating effects due human demands.

The continuous development and manufacturing of plastics and


rubber products can destroy marine ecosystem and its natural habitat,
which leads to existence of invasive species that threatened other species

and habitat change. The more disruptions human can do, the more
damaging effects it creates, and the atmospheric balance that maintains the
Earth’s climate becomes unstable that leads to climate change.

The increasing release of carbon dioxide(CO2) by burning fossil fuels,


coal, oil, and gas as well as the greenhouse gases which includes water
vapor(H20), and smaller but constant emission of methane(CH4),
Chlorofluorocarbons(CFCs) and nitrous oxide(N20), which are trap in the
atmosphere create a Greenhouse Effect heat-trapping blanket that makes
the Earth warmer which changes the climate condition.

Combating Climate Change:

1. Adaptation

• Integrating the findings of researches into national decision-making,


planning and adaptation practices

• Knowledge sharing and technology transfer

• Helping to strengthen national capacity for adaptation planning using


knowledge, technology and policy support

2. Mitigation

• Promote public/private partnerships and support application for best


practice codes

• Develop, refine and support the application of sustainability

• Establish and support knowledge networks

3. Science

• Undertake science-based assessment to increase awareness

• Provide technical support and training for climate change negotiators


and stakeholders

• Provide advisory and support services

4. Communication

• Use media and outreach activities to help deliver key messages on


climate change

• Help communicate successful climate change programmes to key


stakeholders to promote replication of best practices
