Remainder Theorem, Factor
Theorem, Rational Root Theorem
and Factors of Polynomial.

Hello students! In this module, we will be dealing about proves the

remainder theorem and factor theorem. We will also have the Rational root
theorem that will be useful in factoring polynomials. In this module, you will
learn new method in finding the remainder when a polynomial is divided by x
-r. You will also learn a method of determining whether or not x – r is a factor
of a given polynomial.
The entire module helps learners to be a critical thinker and to become
a problem solver which help them in their day-to-day life.

Most Essential Learning Competency/ies (MELC) In-Focus:

1. Proves the Remainder Theorem, Factor Theorem and Rational Root
Theorem. (M10AL-Ig-2)
2. Factors Polynomials. (M10AL-Ih-1)

At the end of this module, you should be able to:

1. Apply remainder theorem and Factor theorem,
2. Apply rational root theorem in Factoring polynomial.

you understand the different lessons and activities that you will encounter
here.

The Remainder Theorem and Factor Theorem

The Remainder Theorem

If the polynomial P(x ) is divided by (x−r ), the remainder R is

a constant and is equal to P(r ).
R=P (r )
Then, we have two methods in finding the remainder when
P(x ) is divided by (x−r ), that is:
1. Use synthetic division, or
2. Calculate P(r )

Similarly, there are two ways to find the value of P(r ):

1. Substitute r in the polynomial expression P(x ), or
2. Use synthetic division.

The Factor Theorem

The polynomial P(x ) has x−r as a factor if and only if P ( r )=0

Proof: There are two parts of the proof of the Factor Theorem,
namely:
Given a polynomial P(x ),
1. If (x−r ) is a factor of P(x ), then P ( r )=0.
2. If P ( r )=0 , then (x−r ) is a factor of P(x ).

Sample Illustration
The Remainder Theorem

Example 1: Find the remainder when (5 x 2−2 x+1) is divided by (x +2).

Solution:
a. Using the Remainder Theorem:
2
P ( x )=5 x −2 x +1 , r=−2
2
P (−2 )=5(−2) −2(−2)+1
P (−2 )=5 ( 4 ) + 4+1
P (−2 )=20+ 4+ 2
P (−2 )=25
 Therefore, the remainder when P ( x )=5 x2 −2 x +1 is divided by (x +2)
Is 25.

b. Using synthetic division:

 Therefore, the remainder is 25.

Example 2: Find the remainder when P ( x )=2 x 4 +5 x 3 +2 x 2−7 x−15 is divided by

(2 x−3).
Solution:
a. Using Remainder Theorem

( ) 3 3
Write 2 x−3 as 2 x − . Here ,r = , the value of r will be use as the value of
2 2
x.
4 3 2
P ( x )=2 x +5 x +2 x −7 x−15

( ) () () () ()
4 3 2
3 3 3 3 3
P =2 +5 +2 −7 −15
2 2 2 2 2

( ) () () () ()
4 3 2
3 3 3 3 3
P =2 +5 +2 −7 −15
2 2 2 2 2
P( 3
2) =21−15

P( 3
2) =6
 Therefore, the remainder is 6
b. Using synthetic division:

4
JHS005D
Mathematics 10: Remainder
Theorem, Factor Theorem,
Rational Root Theorems and
Factors of Polynomial

 Therefore, the remainder is 6

The Factor Theorem

Example1. Show that ( x−1 ) is a factor of 3 x 3−8 x 2+ 3 x +2
Solution:
Using the remainder theorem, we have
3 2
P ( 1 )=3(1) −8 ( 1 ) +3 ( 1 ) +2
P ( 1 )=3−8+3+2
P ( 1 )=0
 Since the remainder is equal to zero then we can say that ( x−1 ) is a
factor of 3 x 3−8 x 2+ 3 x +2.

Note: you can also use the synthetic division to find the remainder
just like what we have above. The process of the remainder theorem
is just same in factor theorem it just that if the remainder is zero
then we can that the divisor is a factor of the dividend.

Objective 2 Discussion
Rational Root Theorem and Factors of Polynomials

The Rational Root Theorem

Let a n−1 x n−1+ an−2 xn −2 +...+a 1 x + a0=0 be a polynomial equation of degree n . If
p
, in lowest term, is a rational root of the equation, then p is a factor of a 0
q
and q is a factor of a n.

Factors of Polynomial
Factor theorem is use to determine if a divisor is a factor of a
polynomial. When can we say that the divisor is factor of polynomial when the
remainder is equal to zero.

How to find the factors of polynomials?

1. Find the possible factors of the last term.
2. The number of factors depends on the degree of polynomials.
3. When you multiply the factors, it is equal to the last term/constant of
the polynomial if the polynomial is written on its standard form.
4. When you add the factors, it is equal to the 2 nd coefficient if the
polynomial is written on its standard form.

5. When you add the factors, it is equal to
the 2nd coefficient if the polynomial is written on its standard form.

Sample Illustration
Example 1: Is (x−1) a factor of (x ¿ ¿ 3+6 x 2+ 11 x+ 6)¿?
By applying the factor theorem, we can substitute the value of r which is 1.
P ( x )=( x ¿ ¿ 3+6 x +11 x +6)¿
2

3 2
P ( 1 )=1 +6( 1) +11(1)+6
P ( x )=1+6+11+ 6
P ( x )=24
 Since the remainder is not equal to zero, therefore (x−1) is not a factor
of (x ¿ ¿ 3+6 x 2+ 11 x+ 6)¿

Example 2: Is (x +1) a factor of ( x ¿ ¿ 3+6 x 2+ 11 x+ 6)¿?

P ( x )=(x ¿ ¿ 3+6 x +11 x +6)¿
2

3 2
P (−1 )=−1 +6 (−1) +11(−1)+6
P ( x )=−1+6−11+6
P ( x )=0
 Since the remainder is equal to zero, therefore (x−1) is a factor of
( x ¿ ¿ 3+6 x + 11 x+ 6)¿
